May the pride and respect held high at Beloit Junior-Senior High be your guide-post for the future. If you realize the importance of your education today, you can better be prepared for the future. Further, realize your importance as illustrated in this poem: A BAG OF TOOLS Isn't it strange that princes and kings, And clowns that caper in sawdust rings; And common people like you and me, Are builders of eternity. Each is given a bag of tools A shapeless mass, a book of rules; And each must make ere life is flown, A stumbling block or a stepping stone. Thanks for the memories, Verlin R. With proms, homecomings, magazines sales, and Government class the year should seem long. This time, however, it went by all too quickly for the seniors. The memories from this year will long be treasured. As the year progressed, the class grew closer. Organizations, athletics, music, and other activities served to keep the seniors busy. The forty-nine members of the class of 1985 left their impression on the school. Showing strong guidance, they led in many areas through the year. The 1985 class is leaving the Halls of Troy this year. Behind they are scattering memories such as the following poem: As the time of our togetherness approaches the final close, The traces of our memories most assuredly to show. The memories are filled with laughter, with tears, and with smiles. And through all the tribulations we spiced it up with style. The sands funnel through the hourglass the time is ticking by. Hard Habit to Break was the theme of the 1984 Winter Prom — and that’s exactly what it turned out to be. It seems like a good time was had by all at this prom. It wasn't because of the decorations or the band, but maybe because of the people who attended. Often times, the prom spirit is taken away by fights over the theme, band or decorations. But at this particular prom, none of this seemed to matter. Couples showed up looking their best and feeling their best. From the looks on these people's faces, as captured by our yearbook staff, you can just tell that everyone was having a good time. This years prom colors were pink and gray, which was evident from the first minute you walked in from the thousands of streamers that were hung. The scene for the pictures was an old time sleigh with greenery and snow surrounding it. Hav'in fun Tim?? Shannon, having a good time????????? Sue and Brad sing Hard Habit to Break. Joyce Lange and Maria Conway were announced as homecoming queens by the surprise of everyone. Not unusual, however, was the rain that has plagued the ceremonies for the last few year. The crowning was twice delayed by the rain and finally began at approximately 4:00. When the crowning began, Mike Tolbert, the emcee, introduced all of the candidates and escorts — then he prepared to open the envelope. When he read the words, It's a tie, a gasp was heard over the crowd and then cheers were heard. Both the dance and the relays were successful making the homecoming an overall triumph. The relays were delayed a short while by the rain, but that was the only problem for everything ran very smoothly. At the dance, approximately seventy people attended and the D. J. created a friendly atmosphere. Queen, Maria Conway and escort Steven Stover. C.’an- n. iutes and escorts trom ietl to right: Denis Adams. Joyce Lange, Pin Hansen,(’armen Guirao Maria Conway. The Junior Prom was a definite success this year! They spent alot of time and effort in organizing this prom to make it the best for the Seniors, and they did. Some of the decorations included: a suspended balloon centerpiece, a bridge, sky murals, me-talic streamers, silver stars, and a moon. With the help of almost the entire Junior class, this prom was one of the best. The banquet started at 6:30 and a large meal was served. The juniors devised a skit called, name that Senior which was a big success. Everywhere anyone would look, all they could see would be ribbons, lace and tuxedos. The girls did their part by showing up in hoops and baby breath, while the boys showed up in shiny good-looking tuxedos. The band at the prom was The Truth, and they, like the entire prom, were a big success. They played mostly hard rock and a few slow songs making the prom an unforgetable one. When the dance finally ended at 12:00, there were still around sixty people there. Blad. our own perscrial sobd gold dancer. 53 YOUNG TROJANS HAVE VARSITY- Front Row (L to R) B. Delka; Mgr.. L. Clay Center then capitalized on two costly mistakes by the Trojans and won 16-0. Beloit then lost to Sacred Heart 12-6 and to Ellsworth, the league champs, 30-0. On Homecoming night, Beloit beat Lindsborg 19-6 and then lost a close contest to Concordia, 28-20. Beloit High School was fortunate enough to have three AFS students this year. Pia Hansen, who was from Germany; Jason Lo-chead, who was from New Zealand and Carmen Guirao who was from Spain. As a group the AFS Club carried out an AFS weekend, inviting many foreign-exchange students from surrounding areas to join in the fun. Among some of the activities were: a party held at the First National Bank community room, a breakfast at the Kadels residence, roller skating at Glasco, a dance for everyone, and Church Sunday morning before they all had to leave. The AFS Club also raises money to allow the foreign-exchange students to call home for Christmas. AFS visitors: Back left; Jason Lochead, Mika Pippuri, Graham Wimaar. Sanne Jensen. Carmen Guirao arrived in Beloit November 11 and left June 20. Carmen said Beloit wasn't what she had expected, but she liked it here. She had thought there would be more big city life and was surprised to find so many small towns. Carmen's hometown of Murcia is located about 50 miles inland from Spains southeastern Mediterranean coastline. Her father is a baby doctor and her mother is a nurse. Carmen hopes to begin her medical studies next year. Carmen started studying ballet when she was three at a private academy for the arts. She has trained in Spanish, modern and classic ballet and the fandango, a native dance of Southern Spain. Teenage life is also somewhat different. No one drives until they're 18 and she and her friends walk to their destination usually in a group. Carmen spent her year here living with Jim and Margaret Moore enjoying every minute of it. Pia enjoys her stay in USA. Pia Hansen left her town of Flensburg Germany to arrive in Beloit July 24th. She lived with the Guipre's during her stay here and departed at the end of June. Pia was used to big city life since her hometown consisted of 90,000, but she was glad she came to a small town, because everyone know's everyone, people are friendly and there are no tryouts for sports. Pia's mom works in a nursing home, and her father is a banker. Next year Pia will be a sophomore in college. Her major subjects are English and Spanish. She one day hopes to be a physical therapist. In Germany school is much different. They go by a weekly schedule instead of the same day to day schedule as we do. While at Beloit High School, Pia went out for volleyball, golf and marching band. Pia enjoyed everything about her stay here but said the time went so fast. Pia celebrates the big 18! Jason Lochead, from New Zealand, arrived July 26 and left at the end of June. He spent the year with the Jerald Schenk family. Jason's hometown is Foxton with population of about 3,500. His family consists of his father David, brother Russell and sister Sally. Upon return to New Zealand he planned to get a job and start university next January. When he first arrived in Beloit he went cruising'' which he had never done before. I couldn't figure out why Cameron kept driving around in circles,” he said. We went past the Quick Shop 23 times. New Zealand and the U.S. are quite similar but some of the differences Jason has noted are light switches go the other way, we drive on the opposite side of the road, there are no pop machines in New Zealand and the only thing sugar free in New Zealand is Tab. While attending Beloit High School, Jason participated in football, wrestling and band. His best experiences were going out for sports. Front row (L to R) T. Odle, I. Yearly, H. Kolman, J. Hyman, ]. Working hard throughout the year paid off for the members of Art and Photo club. They spent all year putting together many projects that showed their imagination, skill, and talents. Members looked forward to the Fort Hays Art Show held May 1st and the Beloit Art Show held May 11th. They displayed projects in the following categories: two and three dimentional drawings, sculpture, stained glass, photography, and painting. For the year of 84-85, dues were $2.00 which was the major money making project. Art and Photo set its goals high for it's members. A few major ones are 1) to introduce the members to not only art but the basic of competition, and 2) to broaden the horizons of those who are interested in art by showing the different forms and techniques used throughout the United States and the world. The club has a strong group of young individuals that will excell in the future. They participated in the October-fest Parade at Concordia; and received a first place trophy in our own Veteran's Day parade. Three members of the band were selected by audition for the district KMEA Band. They were Paula Daniels, Alto Saxophone; Dru Nichols. French Horn; and Doug Twaddell, Trombone. A Christmas concert was presented by the concert band; and the Drill Team and Pep Band worked hard to present fine performances during winter sports events. 84 During halftime ceremonies at B.H.S. football games, the band and flag team demonstrated marching skill and performance ability. The purpose was to motivate and inspire the staff to do a good job on this years annual. Here, the staff decided which cover to use and the number of pages in the book. Then, in February, chosen members of the yearbook staff traveled to Fort Hays to participate in the Kansas Regional Press Association Contest. They completed in various journalistic events. She talked to the members to help them understand the customs and ways of Spain. Her talks were educational as well as enjoyable. Mrs. Treaster provided strong leadership as sponsor for this year s Spanish Club. Once again, the Spanish Club has said hola and adios' to a school year. 104 Believe It Or This year's Student Council participated in many activities and helped to make the year enjoyable. Concession stands and the fees from homecoming helped to finance the StuCo this year. Student Council members started the year with a potluck supper at Mark Deets' house followed by a volleyball game. Enthusiasm marked the beginning of the year for the members of StuCo. The Spirit Committee sponsored a Spirit Week prior to the homecoming football game. Then StuCo sponsored a homecoming dance following the game. Another Spirit Week preceded Beloit Wrestling Invitationals and the Belleville Crossroads Basketball Classic. The StuCo members met at Mr. Robert Holl's house for an ice cream party and spent the day playing games. The year was not all play and no work, however. For Valentine's Day, carnations were sold as in past years. It was a money-making project as well as a way for students to tell that special someone that they care. To give students exposure to another school, a StuCo exchange was arranged with Salina South. Ten members of Salina South's StuCo came and spent a day at school. Ten members of Beloit's Student Council also went and spent a day at Salina South on March 7, 1985. New ideas and innovations were the result of this trip. The annual Mitchell County Dance was sponsored by StuCo again this year. Everyone attending enjoyed themselves. Throughout the school year, StuCo provided support for the entire student body. Jeff Adams provided good leadership along with the other officers and members. Overall, the year was a successful one for the members of Student Council. The little sister Picnic idea was changed to a pizza party. The freshmen were still tortured into weanng the clothes of yester year. After the initiation of the freshmen, the club went on with their ideas to help the community and those who are in need. For Christmas, the Y teens took fruit to their adopted grandparents. As the year went on so did the activities. For those cold winter mornings, the club sold donuts and hot chocolate. Valentines Day was accompanied f?y the heart sisters. The three AFS students at their best! On May 24, 1985, all high school experiences were put aside to make way for the future. On this day, a great deal was summed up for the Seniors at BHS by Alan Quaken-bush. He stated that no matter what career you choose in life, make sure you are happy, because happiness is success. All of the money and fame one could gain from a job couldn't buy happiness. Joyce Lange, class president, gave a speech that replayed memories from the past, and delt with obsticles in our future. A poem was read at the end of the speech by a fellow classmate that perhaps best summed up our lives.
