We would also like to thank the Faculty and Students who made this yearbook possible. Best Wishes to the Senior Class of 1984! 2 3 FACULTY BOARD STUDIES A NATION AT RISK Mr. John Bottom, Superintendent BOARD MEMBERS Bob Lampert Pres. Jerry Cady Vice Pres. Vernon Adams Barbara Cox Darrell Fulhage Lindy Lindblad Members of School Board, present at the meetings. The board discussed many topics this year, one being, “a nation at risk. Each month the board meets and talks about a different topic from the text of recommendations. Although no recommendations have been made that would affect United School District 273, the observations haven’t been completed. The School Board also makes many decisions about school policy, budgets, salary, and appointing new teachers to fill open positions. Their main emphasis is placed on basic educational needs of both students and teachers. Members discuss topic at monthly meeting. Mrs. Roberts, clerk at Board Office. 8 KOLMAN COPP WORK FOR SUCCESS Congratulations to the Seniors of “84”, may this year’s richness and memoirs sustain you in your future. Perhaps, even more important may this education provide the basis for your future. We know great opportunity and challenge faces every individual each day of our life. I would like to suggest three ways of looking at these opportunities and challenges to receive the maximum. a. Time is our most valuable asset and should be treasured above all. Planning saves time. b. Plan for success. The world famous Olympic athlete Jesse Owens said, “I built a ladder and this ladder had four rungs. 1. Determination; 2. Dedication; 3. Discipline; 4. Attitude. An excellent means of describing a winner.” c. Your actions are much more important than your words. Mark Twain observed, “Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but lighting is what does the work.” Will you be Thunder, Lighting or a cloud in the sky? A quote by Robert Louis Stevenson reminds me of our main goal at Beloit Jr.-Sr. High. He once said, “To be what we are and to become what we are capable of becoming is the only end of life.” It is to this end that the students and faculty dedicate themselves during the 1983-84 school year. ‘ XiU In conclusion, live each day to the fullest through planning and doing. I would like to thank each student for the time shared and cooperation during the past year. May God's blessing go with each of you. J' I Verlin R. Kolman James R. Copp Lois Bean Special Ed. In the Trojans first outing the Trojans put down a big South East of Saline team 22-0. The next week they were on the road to Clay Center. Clay Center, a 4A school, gave the Trojans their first loss of the season, 29-14, in a close fought ball game that could have of gone either way. Sacred Heart came to town the next week and in an error plagued game by the Trojans, Sacred Heart came out with a 14-0 win. The team got things together against Ellsworth in a hard fought defensive ball game and came out on the top, winning 6-0. The Trojans kept on rolling over Lindsborg 35-0, and Concordia 14-7, in our annual rivalry. On Homecoming night the Trojans defeated Minneapolis, a much improved team, in a mud bath, 13-6. Riley County then came to town and went down to defeat, 13-0. The Trojans then went to Belleville. They dropped a chance to go to the playoffs and be league champs by letting Belleville slip out of their grasps and lost 16-6, to end the season. They started the season with an impressive victory over Clifton-Clyde. The team then traveled to the Lincoln Tournament and in first round action against Lucas-Luray won. The girls then went on to place fourth in the tournament. Through the season the girls ended up with an 8-15 record, with wins over Belleville, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Minniapolis and a fifth place finish in the Concordia Tournament. The coaches this year were Miss Rita O'Bryan and assistant coach Will Hoestje. Their coaching and support helped spark new interest in the sport of volleyball. “The varsity played dynamic, agressive volleyball, with strong offense and defense. They showed the fans what teamwork can do,” said Coach O'Bryan of the team. The girls got strong leadership from the seniors this year, while the juniors lent support in depth and ability. The AFS attended several weekends throughout the year. Some of the places were Salina, Goodland, and Osborne. In February, Beloit had their own weekend. Money was raised for their class rings and also for their yearbooks. At Christmas the students raised enough money for them to call home. This was another exciting and fulfilling year for AFS. Louise and Aernoud will leave many memories in Beloit. Louise and Melissa play a game of backgammon. The 83-84 school year at BJSHS was blessed by a young lady from “down under'. Louise Hodgson, a native of Wooroloo, Western Australia, spent a year in the United States through the AFS program. In Louise's home town she left behind her mother and father and a younger brother to stay with Darrell and Jocile Fulhage and their daughter Melissa, on their farm southwest of Beloit. “When I first got here I slept for a few days (jet lag). I liked Beloit because all the people were so friendly. They all made me feel so at home and I've had a great host family.” Louise arrived in Salina on the 28th of July after first traveling to LA via 747. She will leave in the middle of July after a 10 day bus trip around the U.S. She plans to major in accounting at the University of Western Australia and then become a CPA. During her stay, Louise has been involved in Art and Photo, AFS, Y-Teens, band and girls basketball. “I really like all the activities and clubs here. Also, 1 have realized the large emphasis on sports here. In Australia, its all done more for fun.” Louise cited some differences between our country and her own. Although none are very major differences she has coped well with the minor adjustments such as; light switches are upside down, toilet water runs the other way, driving is done on the opposite side of the road, roads are patterned in squares, and the slangs make the different dialects of English nearly separate languages. “Some people swear 1 speak a different language”, says Louise. Besides all the differences she says shes having a great time. When Louise leaves us she will be missed greatly. But she has touched each of us with her lively spirit and cute Australian accent. The time she has spent here has made this world that much smaller and helped us to realize that we are all the same no matter where we are from. Louise and here hosl family. Aernoud came to America from Holland. His family consists of six people: Marco and Tineka, his parents, Yolanlhe, his sister, Wouter and Robert, his brothers. When Aernoud arrived in Beloit, he went to live with the Gerald Meiers family. He will spend a full school year at BHS, and return to Holland to attend business college about 7 miles from his home. After one general year of business education, he has several choices. His choice, as of right now, is to plan a career in accounting. If something should go wrong with that choice, then his second career choice would be in the field of computers. Aernoud at home with the Meiers: Jamie, Joe, Kelly. Barb and Gerald. The entertainment consisted of the BHS band, BHS Chorus and Singers, duets, solos and music from a synthesizer. Along with the regular performances, they also had their annual stage show. The show, as usual, had a good turn out and the acts that were performed were both funny and enjoyable for everyone of any age. At state music contest, the BHS Singers received a two, the girls ensamblc received a one, and so did the boys ensamblc. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your Student Council President this past school year. As president I set high goals and standards for both myself, other officers and members of the council. We tried to weave both traditional duties and activities of past councils with the new and varied ideas of our council. The student council has tried to aid the school in all areas. Once again, the Seniors and Juniors torchered their adopted sisters to wear bibs, diapers, and carry baby bottles. After the little sisters, they went on to helping the needy. For Christmas, Y-teeners took fruit baskets around to elderly people that weren't able to celebrate the Holiday Season with family. Members also choose gifts for the Youth Center girls and delivered them. After the Christmas Season, came Valentines day, and heart sisters. The gifts for the sisters consisted of: something red, something sweet or soft, and the last day is something nice. Many interesting things were received, and fun was had by all. Over all the school year was a big success! Many things were done including putting in entries in the Y-teen idea book, selling Kansas color books, and helping people in need. Even though the year went well, talk of not having the club next year was floating around, even though the fact remains that our organization was there to help when people were in need. Mr. fflilK Retires Mr. Woclk pauses to pose. By Brad Lindblad As the year comes to a close, the faculty is losing a greatly valued staff member. Mr. Woelk, who is the Chemistry, Physics, and Freshman Science teacher here at BHS, is retiring. This, his final year, will make a total of 37 years of service as a dedicated teacher. Mr. Woclk. a native Kansan, was brought into this world at a town in Marion County known asGosscl. This town lies just thirty miles north of Wichita. At Ciosscl. Mr. Woelk lived on a farm with his folks. At the beginning of World War II. his father began working at a defense plant in Wichita. In 1950, his father sold the farm and moved into Wichita where he worked until he retired. Mr. Woelk's father is 88 years of age and is living in a resthome at Buhler. Mr. Woclk began preparing for his teaching career at Emporia State which was known as Kansas State Teacher's College when he was attending it. During his second year at Emporia State, Mr. Woclk married a girl from Newton. He then finished his four year term there and received a Bachelors Degree in Physics. Mr. Woclk also received a Masters Degree in Chemistry from Wichita State University. After he finished college, he immediately stepped into the teaching field and took a job in Montezuma where he stayed for only one year. He then spent his next two years at Dodge City. After the two years at Dodge, he went to Wichita where he taught at Wichita North. He spent eighteen years there. Finally, he came to Beloit where he has spent his last sixteen years teaching in the science department. During his long career, Mr. Woelk also received a Fulbritc Grant. He received this grant because of the Soviet push on chemistry and mathematics. With this grant he was able to go to Great Britian and teach. The week at Great Britian was just a trial week and he was soon sent to Kenya Africa. There he taught at a Boys School. Mr. Woclk spent a year over there before he returned home. Mr. W oclks most memorable moments occured here in Beloit. He was teaching one of his classes and his students were involved in a lab project. One of his students came up and told Mr. Woelk that so and so called him a name and if it would be alright if he hit him. Mr. Woclk’s replay was. “Only if you want to spend some time after school. The student promptly walked over to the kid who called him a name and punched him. Blood and teeth went flying everywhere. Then the student came up to and told him he was ready to spend his time after school. Mr. Woclk went to school in a field where he could have received three times as much money being an engineer or a more advanced career than a school teacher. W hen asked if he had any regrets about teaching he replied. “I have a little regret when I think of all the money I could be making, but when I think of all the students I have taught and what good they arc doing then I have no regret at all.” Mr. Woelk's final words to the students were to try more science and mathematics courses. He feels that a career can courses and it just takes a little bit of studying. As a reporter. I think I speak for most people when I say that we are going to miss Mr. Woelk. He has been more than friend. easily be found among these just a teacher; he has been a 126 Rev. Robert Albin. Rev. Edward Piper, and Rev. Larry Grabill. Trina helps Diana McGaughcy with her tassel.
