MEMBERS OF THE Board of Education meet the first Monday of every month. Their time and energy is spent in the important ideas and decisions for the youth of the Beloit City Schools. Some of their main concerns are the school budget and appointment of new teachers. Each of them knows what its like to have children in the Beloit School System. And with this in their minds they make the best effort possible to better basic educational needs. These members deserve a pat on the back for their excellent service to the community. 8 School Board (g(g)PP © KOlUMl KlS TO SUCCEED EVERY INDIVIDUAL HAS a place to be in this world and it is important in every respect whether he chooses to be or not. Each of you have that option, it is your decision and destination. Thomas Wolfe once said, If a man has a talent and cannot use it, he has failed. If he has a talent and uses only half, he has partly failed. If he has a talent and learns somehow to use all of it, he has gloriously succeeded, and won the satisfaction and triumph few men have ever known. Beloit High School has set forth to prepare you for this task. How much easier our work would be if as much effort was made to improve the quality as most of us do trying to find excuses for not succeeding. May your stay at Beloit Junior-Senior High have provided the light to see your destination and your determination and a will to succeed. Best of luck to all, and a special congratulations to the Seniors of '83. 'JjlaA - IT HAS BEEN an exciting and rewarding year at BJSHS. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the seniors and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. At the first of the year Juniors started out with a steady balance of $445.50. And with the thought of an estimated $2,500 or more Juniors had to earn, alot of hard work was ahead. But once again the Class of 84 came through and showed great leadership ability. The hard work and dedication of Juniors and their mothers put on a successful Soup Supper on October 26, earning $1,100.00 Fruit Sales also turned out successful with Juniors earning over $800. Class Dues this year were $10. With all that hard earned money. Juniors put on the Jr. Sr. Prom which was much complimented by those attending. Among these new responsibilities were greater social interaction, more detailed assignments, and knowing that the last years of high school are at hand. PEOPLE MAY HAVE THOUGHT the Beloit high school students were a little on the weird side as they came to school wearing cowboy outfits, obscene T-shirts, and sweats. From October 4th to the 8th, the school was celebrating spirit week. It was all a part of Stu-Co's plan to raise spirit for the Fall Homecoming. Stu-Co designated Tuesday as Sweat 'Em Day, Wednesday as Sign-Up day, Thursday as Rope 'Em Day, and Friday as Dress-up Day. BJSHS also held a homecoming parade and pep rally after school on Friday. Different clubs had floats made, the band marched, and the candidates and their escorts were also in the parade. 48 Spirit Week Moo Moo Monica SP|R|T Moo Moo Monica comes home to Cowgirl Chris and Marshall Michelle J.B. in the corral Spirit Week has brought some very strange looking people into the halls of BHS. One was obviously Moo Moo Monica . She was one crazy critter that helped make Rope 'em day a gigantic success. As the story goes Moo Moo had escaped her pen and was checking out BHS. When the Cowpokes saw Moo Moo, it caused quite a stir. It seemed that they wanted to capture Moo Moo and sell her at the local Moo Moo auction. Two of these cowpokes were Pecos Bill and Two-gun Troy. They both tried to lasso Moo Moo but unfortunately she took off towards the commons area. There she ran into Randy the Roughrider and his trusty vacuum cleaner. Moo Moo knew that she was outnumbered so she romped off. Soon she found Klondike Karen who was plotting her gold claim. Moo Moo thought she was safe but she was in for a surprise! Calamity Kimmie and her clan were planning to rope her. Moo Moo ran for the library but was blocked by J.B. Moo Moo got free and found her owners Cowgirl Chris and Marshall Michelle. LOOKING NEW IN 82 was a perfect motto and battle cry as the Trojans took to the gridiron in 1982. Sporting new uniforms along with super attitude and determination the team tied for the league championship and won district 8 to qualify for the state playoffs. Great Senior Leadership was a vital ingredient to the success of this years squad. The Trojans took to the road in week one as they upset league pre-season favorite Southeast 9-0. It was a defensive game with the Beloit Trojans Speciality Teams providing the scoring. Aaron Adams blocked a punt for a safety and younger brother Jeff returned a punt 53 yards for the big plays. Week two saw our Trojans at home hosting the Solomon Gorillias. Our Trojans showed no respect as we defeated them 35-0. Many squad members saw action and contributed to the slaughter. Sporting a 2-0 record and ranked 7th in the State the Trojans traveled to Salina to take on the Knights of Sacred Heart. Beloit's power really prevailed in the opening drive as the Trojans scored easily for the first score. It proved to be too easy of a score as the Knights stiffened and the Trojans allowed the Knights to get back in the game and score. The end of regulation was knotted at 7-7. The overtime proved to be fatal as the Knights coverted a field goal and the Trojans missed theirs for a heart breaking 10-7 defeat. Week number four saw our Trojans rebound and play outstanding football as we shut out Co-Champ Ellsworth 14-0. The field was wet and the rain fell but the Trojans seemed to get tougher as the defense only allowed 18 yards of total offense. The undefeated Lindsborg Vikings came to town on Homecoming night and ranked 7th in the State. They proved to be a very tough opponent as the Trojans had to fight and fight some more to win the game 21-14 in the winning moments. The Trojans took a glossy 4-1 record to Concordia for our annual rivalry with the Panthers. The state rewarded the Trojans by ranking them back in the top 10. The Black and Orange really dominated the 4A school with a 17-0 white washing. Blaise Klenda showed why his team mates elected him Co-Captain as he led the team to victory. Now with momentum on our side the Trojans started District 8 Play with 41-9 runaway over Minneapolis to clinch a tie for the NCAA league championship and a triumph in district play. Washington was the last road trip in 1982 for the Trojans and a memorable one it was with a 44-6 victory Staging a Showdown between the Buffaloes of Belleville and our mighty Trojans. The winner would represent District 8 in the playoffs. Beloit played well and under near perfect conditions defeated Belleville 28-0. Beloit took an 8-1 record to the first round against a tough Cottonwood Valley League Champ Herrington who also had an 8-1 record. The game was a real tough hard hitting contest between two outstanding defensive teams. Herrington drew blood first then the Trojans struck back and made two other attempts to win the game but came up just one point shy 7-6. This ended any other playoff contests for our Trojans in 82. But one must remember our Seniors who never said die, and the remainder of our squad who gave us many thrills for a job well done as the Trojans really did look new in 82. We played extremely well at times; our 5th place trophy at the Minneapolis Invitational; Big wins over two tough teams, Minneapolis and Southeast; and our 2 point loss to the eventual runner-up in the State, Lindsborg. BASKETBALL THE 1982-83 BOY'S BASKETBALL TEAM, was young with only two seniors and three returning lettermen. The Trojans were coached by Gene Wilkens-Head coach and Larry Smith-Assistant. This years basketball team had a rough season with a record of 0-20. However, they had good talent, but never could play consistant as a team. The Trojans started off the season with a total of six games with the home court advantage, but they ended each game with to many turnovers and therefore losing there first six games by the scores of Lincoln 47-76, Southeast 42-70, Sacred Heart 51-74, Lindsborg 48-67, Solomon 41-53, Ellsworth 41-57, and Minneapolis 50-62. The next game for the Trojans was away at Belleville for the Crossroads Classic Tournament. The Trojans were seated last in the brackets so they met up with the 1st ranked Leopards from Lincoln. In the contest between the Trojans and the Leopards was a close game with a couple of points margin up to the half, then the second half the Trojans turned cold and the final results leaned towards Lincoln with a final score of 49-79. After the first game in Tournament play the Trojans fell and lost the rest of their games by the scores of 59-79 to Belleville and 41-69 to Hebron.- After coming out of the Crossroads Classic in 8th place, Beloit again faced Lincoln for a third time. The Trojans failed to take control of the game which ended into another defeat, the final was 59-75. The next eight games the Trojans played hard looking for a win but they came up short each game with a disappointing loss to Concordia 46-92, Minneapolis 55-65, Southeast 32-47, Sacred Heart 32-47, Belleville 31-46, Solomon 39-55, Ellsworth 49-71, and Lindsborg 43-62. I I BELOIT'S WRESTLING BLACK MACHINE met, accepted, and conquered the challenge of the 1982-83 wrestling season by establishing themselves as the best wrestling team in the state of Kansas. In doing so, the Trojans grappled their way to a 16-0 dual season which increased the dual streak to 64 in a row, won the Clay Center, Norton, and the Beloit Inv. tournaments, and set a new National High School tournament scoring record in the KSHSAA Substate tournament by scoring 261 points (old record 244) to overwhelm the field. Then was the KSHSAA State Championships in which Beloit scored an unbelievable 189V2 points to storm through the field and place eight of eleven wrestlers in the top three places. Needless to say, an awesome performance by any single team through the season. Individually, the Trojans were just as awesome. Two individuals went through the season undefeated and three others had only one defeat. Seniors leading the way were Mark Hewitt, Blaise Klenda, J.D. Broadbent, Dave Bunger, and Eric Harvey. Mark Hewitt set new career school records in falls (79) and victories (124) while winning his third State Championship with a 29-1 record. Blaise Klenda set a new career record in takedowns (155) and a State Championship title with a record of 30-1. J.D. Broadbent, although he was not able to compete at state he had a very good season of 22-7. Dave Bunger gave many exciting thrills while posting a fine 14-3 record. Eric Harvey gave many anxious moments in his years as a two time varsity letter winner for the Trojans. Other outstanding performances included. Matt Treaster's third State title in a row and second undefeated season at 29-0. Toby Johnson went through 31 straight opponents to earn his state championship as a lowly freshman. Parrish Blanding ran his way to a state championship and a 27-1 record. Todd Johnson muscled his way to a second place state medal and a record of 26-3. Jeff Adams overpowered his opponents to get a second place at state and a finish of 23-5. Aaron Adams used his speed and quickness to garner a 23-3 record and a third place at state. Others having a fine season but narrowly missing a state placing were Brett Creager 20-5, Mike Riemann 21-7 and Jeff Heiman 23-8. The Trojans supporting cast was just as impressive as the traveling squad, placing second and third at two varsity tournaments and were undefeated in duals including three varsity matches. 21 out of 26 lettermen are returning to the 1983 squad. The 1982-83 season has come and gone but the memories will never leave. The Challenge, Go For Four , was the ultimate reality. 74 Wrestling Mark Hewitt, 132 lb. State Champion works for a pin. By this time Oscar Arias, AFS student from Argentina had arrived. When Geert Ailliet arrived from Belgium a welcoming AFS party was held at Mrs. Treaster's house. Mexican students that were here from Merida, Mexico were already helping them to get a little more acquainted with everyone. In November they sponsored a AFS weekend. AFS students from various countries who were staying in area towns came to spend the weekend with some members at their homes. A small informal gathering to welcome them was held the Thursday night they arrived. Sing-a-grams were a new money making project this year. In November students could pay a fee to have a song sung to someone during announcements. A few concession stands at basketball games were sponsored by AFS to help earn money also. AFS helped Oscar and Geert to buy their class rings. For their birthdays, they gave them orange Trojan sweaters. They felt this would make them feel more a part of the school. Also on Christmas they recieved ID bracelets given to them by AFS members. This year has been a enjoyable, fulfilling and rewarding one for the AFS students and members. Many memories will never be forgotton. The best of luck is wished to Oscar and Geert. While in Beloit he stayed with the Eldon Kadel family. Oscar's main interests include dramatics, camping and reading. He kept very busy during the year and made many friends. Some of the clubs he was involved in were: AFS, Spanish Club, Art Photo, Tells, StuCo, and Band. He will be well remembered for that special smile he seemed to always have on his face. He is originally from Tielt, Belgium, a city near Bruges and Ghent. He wanted to be an A.F.S. student when he was a sophomore in high school. One of his friends went to the United States as an A.F.S. student and Geert thought it would be a great opportunity. A selection committee picked out Geert's application and decided he would go to the United States. The next thing he knew he was in Beloit, Kansas USA. Geert said that Beloit was a big change because the entire country of Belgium is one fourth the size of Kansas and has four times as many people. Geert stayed with the Heins family. He said he loved staying with them and liked their sense of humor. His favorite thing about the U.S. is the variety of classes in the school system. His favorite city is Hollywood. He likes the prep” style but doesn't like valley talk. Geert really enjoyed his stay in the United States. The staff tried to learn as much about the basics of journalism as they could. The staff of eleven members used this knowlege and produced 9 issues. The papers were passed out to classes the last Friday of every month. The highlight for the year for advisor Diana McDaniel was participating in the KSPA regional contest at Hays in February. Marcia Kjellberg placed third in Headline Writing. Anne Williams placed third in Feature and Newswriting. These girls were then able to go on to state competition at Lawrence in April. Others that competed in the contest were: Arlene Plymire, Shay Blanding, Mike Shamburg and Darrell Adams. I am very proud of my staff that competed in the contest. It was a rewarding experience. With his winsome manner is gone from this place; Even though it's the end of his earthly race; Do not from your hearts erase; He was sent to be a golden shinning ray, For you to share for many a day. Now you can each by your own deeds. Show just how much God can supply your needs; We for some purpose were all brought together-sister and brother; So we'll all remember to be that much closer to one another. We can all be a part of all the world's art If we would only try to make a fresh start; How we bid farewell to the fairest of us all; To be with him we too must listen for God's call. Rory Dale Sibley, son of Harold and Betty Sibley was born on September 26, 1964. He was born in Beloit and departed this life suddenly on January 28, 1978, at the age of 13 years. He liked swimming, hunting, and fishing. In school he enjoyed his rocket project in sixth grade and art in junior high. He loved his friends and his family. His family includes his parents, eight brothers and six sisters. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1983 WOULD LIKE TO DEDICATE THIS PAGE IN MEMORY OF RORY 144 Rory: A Tribute In the Course of Time The feeling . . Of time rushing past So quickly-too quickly! Many friends will soon leave To go out on their own. Bringing closer thoughts of my future. Senior year rushes to meet me. College just around the corner. I feel As if I'm sprinting through the days Out of breath, waiting to slow the pace. Slow the hours to minutes To savor each more fully. To postpone the future-Scared of what will come. The changes I may not like. I wish . . . For everyone and everything To remain the same. To keep the closeness And affection of my friends. For time to stand still. If not. Then for life always to be as good-As now.
