The 1977 Trojan Basketball team put it together and produced the best record in 12 years with a 15-8 mark. The team got off to a slow start before the Christmas break as they dropped to a 1-4 record. Losing to Sacred Heart 59-63; Southeast 61-64; Concordia 70-74; Minneapolis 63-67; and beating Lincoln 91-61. Reversing the normal Beloit basketball trend the Trojans came on the second half of the season and mounted a 14- 4 record. They started the rampage by beating Belleville 64-62; Solomon 53-51; Ellsworth 58-49; Lindsborg 41-38. The next game for the Trojans was Sacred Heart. The Knights were 11-0 overall. Beloit played them to a 35-35 halftime score, then to a 51-51 third quarter score and a 65-65 regulation game time score. In the first overtime the two powers played to a 68-68 deadlock. In the second overtime it was knotted at 71-71, and finally in the third overtime Beloit pulled away to a 77-73 victory. It was a great victory for the Trojans! At the Concordia Invitational the Trojans lost to Southeast 57-59, and dropped their second game to Sacred Heart 70-75, and came back to beat Minneapolis 71-60. Southeast won the Concordia tournament, and were Beloits' next opponent in league action. The Trojans took home a 75-73 victory. The roundballers went on to bear Lincon 70-60 before losing to Minneapolis 50-62. Bouncing back from this loss Beloit beat Solomon easily 91-73; stopped Ellsworth 74-63; and Lindsborg 72-57. In Regional action the Trojans knocked off Linn 83-63. In the second round Beloit beat Minneapolis in a very exciting game with the winning shot made at the buzzer, and won 71-70. The Trojans went on to take the Regional Championship by beating Washington 58-44. Advancing to Sub-State action at Beloit's home court the Trojans drew Valley Falls. The feature game was played at 8:00 pm with the Trojans and Valley Falls playing to the wire as the game went into double overtime before Valley Falls put it away 51-55. The Trojans capped a great season with a record of 15- 8. Trojans making the All-League team were Tim Campbell and Wade Wentling. Campbell and Went-ling also made the All-Area teams. Jay Rowh was Head Coach. Cox pops a jumper against Minneapolis. Tim Campbell and Grant Thierolf go up for a rebound in action against Sacred as Kyle Wentling looks on.
