Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1977 volume:

Students attending Beloit Junior Senior High School during the 1976-77 school year will always be remembered as the first group to reap the benefits ol a long struggle. Four hundred and thirty five students enrolled at the beginning of the fall school term and with these students came new attitudes and goals. Although tears were shed as the old Beloit High School was tom down, a unique sense of pride and responsibility was felt to the new school. This attitude prevailed as the year progressed with club activities, individual honors, scholastic achievements, musical and dramatic productions and athletic championships. It was truly a Year of the Trojan. In the following pages of the 1976-77 Yearbook, the staff members have recorded the events and personalities that helped to shape this year. It is with the same unique sense of pride the staff members dedicate this book to all the patrons of Unified School District 273 who made the present Beloit Junior Senior High School a reality. Mr Do not think that what is hard for you to master is impossible for man; but if a thing is possible and proper to man, consider it attainable by you Marcus Aurelius A burst of music brought by marching feet, a treble cheer, a song from many voices clear and sweet, a bit of drama staged by actors brave all these within the molding frame of school. - Helen Lukens - ID Id Wellcoime§ Juifelba Jutta Kopp came to the United States from Freiburg, Germany to be the 1976-77 American Field Service student at Beloit Junior Senior High. Her home for the year was with Lynn Newcomer family. Lynn is an instructor at the Youth Center of Beloit and his wife Bonnie is a homemaker and former BHS teacher. The Newcomers' have two children, John and Meredith, who was bom during Jutta's stay. ' 'When 1 applied to become an AFS student, 1 wanted to come to the U.S. Jutta commented. She first found out about the exchange program when one of her friends applied. Jutta contacted the teacher in charge and recieved an application. Out of the 30 applicants, Jutta and 19 others were selected. Jutta's choices of countries included the U.S. Europe and Russia. Jutta was fairly well acquainted with the our country through films she saw at school. Being isolated is one of her dislikes about the U.S. She feels we miss out on getting to know about other countries, unlike Europe, where the countries learn to live in harmony with each other. Jutta has parents, Wolfgang and Gisela, and two brothers, Martin and Sebastin, awaiting her return to Germany. Jutta cites several differences in lifestyles between the two countries. Teens in Germany can't drive until they're 18 instead of age 16 as in the U.S. She was impressed by the fact that in the U.S. friends have more of a chance to get together especially in large group gatherings. She feels attitudes are more carefree and attributes it to the political system. Emotions are also shown more freely here than in Germany. Jutta was very involved in activities during her stay. Being fond of Music, she participated in girls ensembles for League and State Music Contests, she sang with the BHS Singers, and was a dancer in the Fall Production of ' 'Oklahoma.'' Clubs Jutta belonged to included Future Medical Careers, Student Council, AFS, Pep Club, Y-Teens and Art and Photo Club. Jutta was Honorary Queen for the Springs Sports Homecoming Festivities. When Jutta returns to Germany in June, she will have two more years of High School. She then plans on going to college and studying medicine. I thought my visit was worthwhile and 1 really have enjoyed being here,1' commented Jutta. Jutta was named Honorary Queen at the Spring Sports Homecoming Festivities. The Lynn Newcomers' were Jutta's American family during her stay in the U.S. Family members include John (on tricycle), Bonnie, Meredith (on Bonnie's lap), Lynn and Jutta. Inopp to fclne UoSo The AFS chapter sponsored a ' 'Welcome to Beloit'' picnic in An avid photographer, Jutta suggested a pose order for Jutta to get acquainted and a farewell dinner so friends utilizing different lighting techniques. could wish her well. Art was one of Jutta's most enjoyable classes. She took advantage of many of the Art mods offered at BJSHS. 11 CLUB MEMBERS HOST SPRING ART SHOW Members include Alan Donahoo, Mark Golladay, Mike Meier, David File, Doug Peterson, DawnBoden, Tammy Walker, second row, Brad Treaster, Calvin Brummer, Mark McDonald, Monty Carrico, Sheldon Christie, Jutta Kopp, John Noah, Cary Dietz, third row, Tim Krone, Ian Drake, Jeff James, Mark Spicher, Alan Shull, Kyle Wentling, Jerry Parson, Danny Gentry, fourth row, Carter File, Tim Gilbert, Craig Farwell, Jack Lewis, Raymond Wegner, Curt Farwell, Bruce Wright, Kyle Swisher, Doug Crumrine. fifth row, Mr. Pillard, Lynette Terry, Holly Hartman, Lome Loganbill, Chris Snedden, Kathy Fulton and Guy Allphin. F FA MaKes A Comeback FFA was designed to develop young persons interested in Agriculture into competent leaders and successful people. This often helps the community develop as well as helping the members in their future careers. Their fulfillment in this object is accomplished by a number of things ranging from contests to learning activities in their Vo-Ag classes. Great emphasis is placed upon brotherhood and cooperative efforts. Pride is taken in the number of people participating in activities especially since it is all voluntary. Projects for this year included a Farm Machinery Saftey program and a BOAC (Building Our American Communities) project which includes construction and cleanup activities around the new school grounds and shop projects. Summer activities include work experience projects, meetings, State FFA Convention and work at the Mitchell County Fair. Through the year FFA members attended land and livestock judging contests as well as livestock judging schools, dairy products and poultry judging schools, several conferences, State FFA Contests, Co-op camp and state FFA leadership camp. In May FFA sponsored a Banquet which was attended by parents and members. The key speaker was the National FFA Vice-Pres., Sam Brownback. Campbell placed first in the finals of the open 880. This was the first time in eight years a Beloit trackster has won first in a state meet. The team placed consistently in the top five in all meets this year as well as taking top honors at both the Osborne Triangular and Osborne Invitational. Adams broke his own school record in the two mile almost every meet getting the time down to 10:07.3 at Regionals. Also at Regionals, Campbell broke 2:00.0 in the open 880 running a 1:59.4. Adams and Campbell both qualified for the state competition by placing third in each of their respective races. At the State Level in Wichita, both tracksters placed seventh in their race, each felt they hadn't run their normal race but were satisfied with their individual and teams' fine season. Qose behind that would be the thrill of winning the second 2A State Football Championship. This year the Trojans mounted up a 13-0 record the best ever by a BHS football squad. Speaking of the best ever, it was said that this year's Christmas Prom, This One's for You, was one of the best that a Senior Class has presented in a long time. The dance was highlighted by the musical abilities of Natural Gas. The Seniors had numerous moneymaking projects, such as a car wash and magazine sales, which brought in a considerable amount of money. Another thing that went well for the Seniors this year was their Homecoming float, We're Expecting a Victory, which placed first in the Football Homecoming Parade. One thing that didn't go quite as expected for the Seniors this year was when the Underclassmen walked away with the powder-puff football game victory, despite the experience of the upperclassmen's nine man coaching squad. The Juniors honored the class of '77 with Stairway to Heaven for their Prom. The banquet was served in the High School Commons Area. Tremor provided entertainment for the dance held at the Elks Club. Officers for the Senior Class this year were Tim Campbell, President; Kyle Wentling, Vice President; Janette Wilson, Secretary; Dawn Thompson, Treasurer; Debbie Huggins, StuCo Representative.
