a BHS 197475 VOID IF DETACHED-GOOD FOR ONE TRIP Many questions may come to mind as you flip through the '75 Trojan Yearbook. Some of the comments you might here are: Color pages? What's the suitcase on the cover? The Trojan Staff decided this year to have a different look by using the theme Traveling Through the Year which qoes along with the suitcase on the cover. Special headings for division pages also tie in by using students quotes. As you open the book you'll notice this year we have choosen to use the school colors by using a black coyer accented with orange endsheets. The title page, drawn up by Dave IS lehl, represents the ticket which carries the message through the yearbook. The staff wanted to change the style of the book this year by using color pages instead of the traditional white. On behalf of the 1975 Trojan Staff, we hope you will all enjoy traveling with us through the year. TRAILS VS ia TROJAN TRAILS BELOIT. KS. origin dest RARE ALL ABOARD IstCLUSS 3rd CLASS SPECIAL. And as he haunts the building from beginning to the end, His loneliness is less Because He's finally found a friend. Bev Ackerman My senior year has been the most exciting of all in high school. The changes, the looking forward to going out on your own, but yet looking at the friends you're leaving and going to miss. There will always be memories of all we went through. Joan Weidenhaft Senior '75 I think everyone has grown up a lot since we were freshmen. They don't seem like the same people. This has been the most fun year of all my high school years, but it really bothers me because the freshmen don't have any respect for us. Kathy Huffman Senior '75 After a year of being Senior Class President, I know why no one else wanted the job! Seriously though, it's too bad that you really don't get to know your classmates until your Senior year. Lee Widrig Senior 75 This year has gone by so fast it doesn't seem like I'm graduating. I've had so much fun this year. If I had it all to do over I would have gone out for every sport and done everything I could. After all, high school only comes once in life. Carl Hobbs Senior 75 Those were the days. Every high school student should spend each day, each hour, each minute as if it were their last. High school like everything else doesn't last forever, its something to remember and cherish every day, always. Lisa Annis Senior '75 I know I'll never forget my senior year because of all the fun times I've had. And you really get to know some people you haven't known before. I think this year we had one of the greatest senior classes ever. Natalie McClintock Senior '75 The high school years flew by with a lot of fun, and I wish that I could go back through it again, knowing what I know now! I'm just getting to know my classmates this year, and I wish I would have gotten to know them sooner. Dave Mehl Senior '75 It seems like our senior year went so fast. I've enjoyed this year, but I'm glad it's over. Now everybody will be deciding on what to do in the years to come, and I wish the best of luck to the seniors of 75 . Joey Cikanek Senior '75 FIRST CLASS A variety of memorable events made this year special for the Class of 75. Homecoming brought a first-place float with a theme of Let s Make it 5 in a Row. Senior girls played a big part in a win against the underclassmen in the powder puff game and crowning of Bob McGaughey as king. His attendants were Barry Treaster and Carl Hobbs. Government classes toured the Capitol in Topeka and watched the House and Senate in session. Magazine sales and the senior play, We Shook the Family Tree were the primary money-making projects, and enough was brought in to finance the Christmas prom The Long and Winding Road. The realization that the year was almost over came when colors were chosen for cap and gowns and also when graduation announcements and class keys were ordered and received. Senior class officers, (L To R): Lee Widrig, president; Bev Ackerman, vice-president; Rose Dobratz, stu-co representative; Nancy Abercrombie secretary; Charlie Wagner, treasurer. I couldn't believe that I would soon be leaving a place I'd made my home for a year. It also meant saying goodbye to all the people I've known, expecially my family, then my classmates and friends. It has been the most interesting and the happiest experience for me to spend my last year of school at Beloit High School, in Beloit, Kansas. I'd like to thank everyone who has made it possible and hope I won't be easily forgotten. I'll remember it as being an exciting year. I've also enjoyed getting to know a lot of upperclassmen. Karen Glenn Freshman '78 Our class is like a V.W. all style and no class. We would be a real good class if we all worked together. But I know in the next two years we will be the best class around. Ward Bryant Sophomore '77 The Junior class is great, until it comes to working for the class activities, then it is more individualized instead of a group. Connie Schaffer Junior 76 Outstanding records have been ac-chieved this year by the Freshman class. So far we have had a freshman letter this year and thats pretty good. Overall, we think were the best class to come to Beloit High. We just got what it takes. Ian Drake '78 It's been a good year and while having fun at the car wash we made some money. Jeanette Wilson Sophomore '77 The junior class are the roudiest, proudest, and best looking, most athletic, party going, greatest, and just all around fantastic, and not the least bit conceited. Mike Earle Junior '76 This has been a pretty fun year. It s been fun being out for sports really having the school backing you up. It was a pleasure knowing all the seniors. Carter File Freshman '78 We learned the unnecessary this year, not speaking of a certain class, Mr. Rowh. Maybe we will have more fun next year. We messed up the second act so bad that Mrs. Jacobs almost had to rewrite it. The second night was better. We remembered our lines and the audience caught most of our jokes. Bev Ackerman Sr. Play'75 The decorations were really good but the band could have been better. Of course it would have been more exciting if I hadn't been in the restroom half the time, trying to get a certain (Sleepy??) person out of there. Amy Ridgeway Xmas Prom '76 The juniors did a really good job on the decorations this year. The evening was a success due to the large content of Punch that I consumed. You see, since this is my last year, I couldn't let it slip by without making the most of it. Becky File Jr.-Sr. Prom '75 It was a lot of fun but I think people needed to work harder on their lines. I was really glad that we got some theater muslin and made the new flats, because even though it was a lot of work, it sure improved the looks. Following the dinner, pictures were taken by a professional photographer by requested couples. Dance time was 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., providing the music was Together. Having only one day to decorate, the Juniors showed tremendous effort in making the prom a success. Spring Sports Homecoming began at the Beloit Relays, Thursday, April 17. The queen candidates, Marcia Motes, Sandy Williams, and Angela Gupire were introduced at 11:00 that morning by the Master of Ceremonies, Jim Beeler. Beloit did very well, taking second, following Osborne in the 2A division. A sock-hop was held at the Beloit Elementary School, Friday evening, April 18. The queen was crowned at 11:00 during a short intermission, receiving this honor was Marcia Motes. Student Council members decided to add a little variety by entertaining the student body with a DJ J.W. Bush from Salina, instead of the traditional band. Everyone enjoyed the change of pace and had a good time. It was an honor that made the day unforgettable. (Marcia Motes, ’75). Marcia is escorted by Joey Cikanek. It was an experience that I was happy to be part of. (Sandy Williams, '75). Lee Widrig is Sandy's escort. Getting into the jive of things, everyone was hip on the '50's fad. Slick-backed hair, high ponytails, rolled up jeans, bobby socks, saddle oxfords, calf-length skirts, and ruby red lipstick were included in the student body attire. Beginning the '50's trend was two spirit days, followed by an old fashioned pep rally and then ending by a sock hop later in the year. The Juniors carried out this theme in their play, Our Miss Brooks. All in all, everyone enjoyed dressing up and participating in the fun and games. This year's class is a lot better than last year. (Joan Weidenhaft, ’75) It's different, exciting, and confusing but it's fun. (Tami Thierolf, ’76) The yearbook journalism class was kept busy during the year with page layouts and cropping pictures. Some major decisions made were the book cover, theme, and color pages. With a large class, decisions like that, although they may seem simple, really proved to be quiet a challenge. Making a yearbook is hard work and if the staff wants any creative ideas at all, then they REALLY have to use their imaginations. Sometimes opinions clash, but out of all the arguments and general disagreements, the staff finally managed to get their layouts finished and the book off to the printers for the final touch. Helping the students along were Andra Fletchall and Joan Weidenhaft, co-editors, assisted by Mrs. Candee Jacobs. Leads, features, waxing, border tape, blue pencils, type size, copy ... these journalistic terms became very familiar to the BHS Life Staff. In the process of producing the BHS Life, the first step is to assign and write stories. When all the stories are completed, they are sent to the Solomon Valley Post to be typed and waxed. After the copy is sent back to the high school, the staff then does the page layout. This process itself takes a lot of time because copy must be measured exactly to fit in available spaces. With the paper being completely layed out, it is sent to ABD Printers and the finished paper is passed out to the students. Most people don't realize how much work goes into making a paper, and if every staff member doesn't do his part, then the whole process is slowed down. Staffers aimed to produce a paper once a month but as the year came to an end, the paper was printed only once every two months. 40 BHS Life Staff ... Co-Editors ... (Carl Hobbs, '75) With the new found spirit and brighter outfits, pep club's membership reached a total of 86. Activities began with a poster-pizza party on August 31, 1974 in the school lunchroom. Posters were made for the football season. Keeping the athletes' spirit high, members spent countless hours getting ready for pre- game activities. Different ideas were experimented with each week of the athletic seasons. Preparations included decorating the boys' lockers, surprise pep rallies, victory socks, pep-up breakfast, making yard signs, giving the guys plenty of candy, and making cupcakes. All members received carnations at the Beloit- Lincoln football game from an anonymous source in appreciation of the fine job they had done. A breakfast of rolls and juice was also provided at the Mainliner for the girls. Participation in pep club spirit was greatly improved this year. Varsity and B-team cheerleaders received all Superior ribbons and were nominated for the Dr. Pepper Award, which is given to the five best squads attending. The two squads also brought home two spirit sticks. The Wrestling cheerleaders received one excellent and three superior ribbons. This year the cheerleaders worked hard on summer money-making projects to buy new outfits. They sponsored three bake sales and a fire cracker stand to earn this money. To promote more spirit and enthusiasm, the squads changed the style of pep rallies. An old fashioned pep rally and a '50's day helped this cause. BHS had many and varied achievements In both academic and activity fields to be proud of. And we were able to see the long awaited Jr-Sr High School become a construction reality. Mrs. Jacobs It has been an interesting school year full of surprises and assigned assembly seats. The students seem to be looking forward to moving into the new building since they take such good care of this one! Mrs. Larson It's been a satisfying year and I've really enjoyed it. Mr. Loy I've enjoyed working with the girls I have had in class this year. The year seemed to go rather smoothly. I'm looking forward to moving into the new building next year. Miss Gillmore The year has gone by very fast, because it has been a good year for everyone. We can look back to this year with many fine accomplishments. I am proud to have worked with such a fine Senior Class. Mr. Harrison I have really enjoyed being in Beloit and working with the young people of this community. I would like to wish the best of luck to all the students and hope that they are successful in whatever vocation they choose as their life's work. Mr. Levin - Principal It has been a very enjoyable year, and we should all be looking forward to next year. We are going to miss Mr. Levin, but we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to work with Mr. Guiot. Mr. Rowh It's been an interesting year to say the least. IRVIN LEVIIl After nine years of serving Beloit schools as principal, Mr. Levin is stepping down. Mr. Levin graduated from Kensington High School in 1946. In 1947 he began teaching at Wangerin County School, Smith County, Kansas. Levin served in the US Army from December 1950 to December 1952. From 1953 to 1957, he taught 7th and 8th grade at Kensington Grade School. Beginning in the summer of 1957 to 1966 Levin taught at St. John's Grade School in St. John, Kansas. While teaching, in the summers he worked to obtain his Bachelor Degree in Science Education. He got it from Fort Hays State College in 1959. Then in 1965 he received his Masters Degree of Science in Administration from Hays. Levin came to Beloit in 1966 and was principal in the old Junior High, and also in the basement of the Municipal Building. In 1970-71 he came to Beloit High as principal. He has been employed in this position for the last five years. Mr. Levin has loved his stay in Beloit. His biggest pride is the kids. He is traveling to Ulysses to be principal of their Junior High. The school has 330 students and classes such as home economics, sewing and woodworking. Their high school is 3A. Mr. Levin deserves a lot of credit for the time, and effort he has put into BHS. It is probably the most thankless job a person could hold. The kids here wish him the best of luck with his new job, and although we may not act like it, we are grateful for his guidance. 97 Football Is a demanding sport which requires a lot of time and effort. This year we were fortunate enough to go to the Regional Playoffs and through 11 games nobody was seriously hurt. Great credit must go to the coaching staff for their effort. Rick Hartenbower FB '75 Prospects look good for the upcoming season, with almost the whole team coming back. Hints of a large team Indicate one should be careful If one doesn't wish to lose his head to a misdirected golf ball. Jon Beeler Golf '75 For once BHS Basketball had a winning season, and I think a great deal of this winning was due to the spirit of the Pep Club. I very much liked being a part of the team, which was led by a great coach. Gary Smith BB '75 We had a better season than in the past, because we were even able to go to the Regionals. Changing coaches was difficult at first, but we came out better in the end. Arguments and praises both went along to make the season worthwhile. Jerl James Tennis '75 If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again! Honestly, Girls Basketball was a lot of fun, but a lot of hard work. All I can say is that the experience will come in handy. So watch out, 'cause the girls will Smoke 'Em! Kris Wood GBB '75 Track is a sport that can be achieved either team wise or as an individual. It is a fun sport with a lot of fun guys and coaches. Coach Rowh gets a lot of work out of a bunch of absolutely non-working guys. Randy Walker B Track '76 I like wrestling because you can go out on the mat and try to tear your opponent to pieces. The practices are long and hard, but when it comes down to match time, It's really worth all the hard work. “ Jeff James Wrest. 77 Even though our record didn't show it, we played our basketball games pretty well for our first year. Track season made up for it though. For about 11 people out we did really well by placing near the top in most meets. We sent 5 people to the state meet placed in the top 8. We worked hard deserved what we got. The first league game found the Trojans meeting the highly rated Minneapolis Lions at Minneapolis. Despite the predicted results, Beloit out maneuvered the Lions 31 to 13. With victory in their veins, the team saw action at home against Belleville. Although highly penalized the Trojans still led the Buffs in all statistics. The final score was 40 to 6. Beloit got off to a slow start against the Osborne Bulldogs who led at half time 7 to 0. The second half Beloit came out and blasted them, winning a 35 to 7 victory. The Trojans saw action next at homecoming winning against the Stockton Tigers 27 to 2. With a winning streak going Beloit traveled to Concordia to face their greatest rival and play one of the toughest games of the season, Beloit scraped by 9 to 6 in the last 11 seconds of the game. After caging the Mankato Cougars 27 to 0, Beloit met the Smith Center Redmen, tearing them up 33 to 6. For the last league game of the season, Beloit faced the Lincoln Leopards who wanted to win league for the fourth time in a row. But with the strength of our defense and the thought of the District playoffs, Beloit rolled by them for the score of 34 to 10 and the league championship. District playoffs led the Trojans to a contest against the Frankfort Wildcats. At the start of the kickoff the Trojans put it to the Wildcats with a shut out of 30 to 0 and the District trophy. The trojans faced stiff competition when they went for the Regional playoffs against the Wakeeney Eagles. Despite the spirited followers, Beloit fell to defeat 28 to 3. The Beloit Trojans had seven players who made the A11-League team, they were, Jon Beeler, end; Barry Treaster, tackle; Rich Hartenbower, back; and Randy Walker, back. The outstanding defensive All-League players were Carl Hobbs, lineman; Wayne Pet-terson, back; and Bob McGaughey, back. The Tennis team had a fairly even season this year. Starting out slow, they lost their first four matches, they then came back strongly to win the last four in a row. Mrs. Wirth in her first year as coach reflected on the season by saying, I felt we had a good season, and I'm looking forward to future ones. We are sorry that we have to lose our four seniors but we have a fine group of young tennis players coming up. Tennis is a hard sport to play and coach because so many details in the skills can throw your whole game off. Our team is well grounded in the basics so next year we will be focusing on game strategy. Besides going undefeated, when it came to tournament time the Trojans showed their ability and teamwork when the pressure was on. Piazza stated at the end of last years season he thought there was little chance in capturing the NK L title again in the coming year. But the Trojans put a new light on the picture at their first duel with Smith Center rolling by them 41 to 12. Their next duel was with Superior, a match the Trojans coaches were ready for. They proved successful in winning 31 to 28. Trojans came up against Minneapolis caging the Lions 46 to 15. Concordia was the duel everyone had waited for. The team knew it would take all they had and more, results were a very close match with Beloit coming out on top 27 to 24. Trojans felt confident now, and stopped the Osborne Bulldogs 42 to 12. Tim Chapman, Dan Pruitt, Dan Fobes and Coach Piazza. The team then faced the Stockton Tigers, taming them 39 to 18. Journeying to Ellsworth to take on the Bearcats, the grapplers pulled through again winning by a close call 32 to 29. The next match was with Belleville and this would decide who the NK L Champs were to be. It was close until the upper weights, but starting with 145 class Beloit had 5 pins in a row, tromping the Buffs 48 to 12. In tournament action Beloit went to Clay Center for 2 days ending up with a tie for 3rd place with 66 points. At Beloit Invitational, Trojans led and took the tournament for the second time in two years. When Regional came, two boys were unable to wrestle due to injuries, however, BHS still ended up finishing as Co-Champs, with 94 points. Trojans took seven boys to State placing 4th as a team. They were Kevin Hewitt, Mark Spicher, Wayne Petterson, Jeff Tevis, Greg Hewitt, Carl Hobbs and Dave Gantenbein. Girls track had a fairly good season considering only 13 girls went out for the sport. To start out the year their first two track meets were cancelled and were unable to be re-scheduled. So the first meet they attended was at Lincoln, April 17. The girls placed fourth in the meet and had an all around good day. After that the girls placed 4th at a hard Tipton track meet. A lot of girls either broke or set their own personal records there as well as school records. April 16, the tracksters travelled to Clay Center for an eight team meet. Considering all the teams there were 3A except Beloit the girls did very well. Rose and Linda Dobratz both broke the school record in the hurdles plus Holly Hartman broke her own record in the shot put. The following Monday, April 21, the girls hosted their own invitational. The tracksters placed third out of the nine teams present. Most everyone placed in their respective events. Later that week the girls travelled to Concordia (April 24). The only record broken that day was the 880 yard run, by Michelle Guipre. The NK L track meet was hosted by Beloit on Thursday May 1. Beloit placed 4th out of the seven league teams. Holly Hartman set a new NK L record in the shot put with a throw of 35' 3 4 . The day was a complete success for everyone. May 9, some of the tracksters went to Oberlin for the Regional track meet. Beloit placed in three events. Linda placed 2nd and Rose placed 3rd in the hurdles. Holly placed 3rd in the shot put, and the 440 relay also placed 3rd. The state track meet was held in Wichita, May 16 and 17. Holly placed 7th in the shot put and the 440 relay team placed 4th. Jim and Jon Beeler The 1975 Golf season opened with the Beloit Invitational where the Trojan golfers placed 3rd out of 8 teams with Jon Beeler being 5th medalist. On April 9 the squad went to Minneapolis where they were 2nd out of 12 teams and Jon was 4th medalist, also making a good showing for the day were Tim Steiner and Jim Beeler. Beloit outscored three other teams to win the Osborne Quadrangular, with Jim as 3rd best golfer followed by Jon, Tim and Kyle Wentling. Trojan golfers then bumped into some tough 3A competition at Clay Center and Ellsworth where they placed 8th and 7th respectively. Further action was at Mandato for a dual meet which they won, the team was led by Jim and Jon who were top golfers for the day with Tim, Kyle and Kevin Koster not far behind. With one tough meet at Belleville before league, the golfers placed well being 3rd overall and the top 2A school, Jim was 4th medalist. Then traveling to Mankato for league, in an upset the squad got beat for the title and had to settle for second to Osborne. Regional this year was at Sabetha where the team did quite well winning the 2 man competition by 4 strokes, the 2 man team consisting of Jim and Jon Beeler; the 4 man team also won 3rd and qualified for state. Its members were Tim, Kevin, Kyle and Ken Christie. Qualifying an entire team, the team went Into state with high hopes, to get to golf at state is a great honor as there are only 56 golfers in the tournament, and Beloit was the only team qualifying an entire team of 6. The 2 man team finished 8th at state, and the 4 man team finished 7th.
