Football Homecoming Football homecoming began with a traditional afternoon parade. Sophomores won first prize with their float, Making You an Offer. Queen candidates and their escorts were then introduced at the pep rally held downtown. At halftime of the Beloit-Concordia homecoming game to the music Let Me Call You Sweetheart, the Beloit Trojan Band and Pep Club formed a heart on the football field. Following this the queen candidates, Marsha Ackerman, Kathy Brummer, Pat Kadel and their escorts were introduced by Greg Hansen, the Master of Ceremonies. Marsha Ackerman was crowned 1973-74 Football Homecoming Queen. With a 33-0 victory for the Trojans, the Queen and her attendants, along with the BHS student body, danced to Justis at the Elks Lodge. During our four years of football we learned to play for and with each other.” (Steve Thompson 74) Football is played with controlled violence, a smart coach, and players who understand what it's all about. (Rick Hartenbower 75) Football is a demanding experience that helps to develop accord between all members of the team. (Carl Hobbs '75) Head Football Coach Clayton Williams sums up a winning season with a 6-3 overall record by saying, Coming within one step of our goal of winning the league was a great finish for our boys. Off to a good start, the Trojans tromped Riley County but then met defeat the following Friday against the high ranked Minneapolis Lions. But the gridders showed winning consistency in their next two league games with Belleville and Osborne. The Trojans saw their second defeat when they traveled to Marysville for the Bulldogs Homecoming. Determined to win their own Homecoming game, the Trojans captured a victory over the Concordia Panthers. Again, the gridders showed talent in winning two consecutive league games against Mankato and Smith Center. Losing a crucial game with Lincoln, which would have made Beloit NKL co-champions, left the Trojans with a second place title in league play. Assisting Coach Williams were coaches Jay Rowh, Ken Piazza, and Jerry Johnson. The players making the all-league team were seniors Bob Miller, Jerry Goddard, and Mike Gridley. Receiving honorable mention were Rick Hartenbower, Mark Studer, and Shelly File. Hartenbower was also named All-American in High School Football by Who's Who in High School Athletics.
