The best senior play in the last 50 years.” (Mike Blass, 74) Fairly good, we should have them all the time if they had enough people.” (Tim Steiner, '76) The play was fun and exciting, and we had an excellent play cast. It could not have been performed better than it was. (Stephen Zachary, 74) The senior class of BHS presented the play Harvey, written by Mary Chase, in the BHS auditorium on December 20, 1973. Situated in a city in the far west, the three-act comedy is set in the library of the Dowd family mansion; and in the reception room of Chumley's Rest, a sanitarium. The play centers around the exploits of Elwood P. Dowd and his friend, Harvey, a six foot tall white rabbit; and the attempts of Elwood's sister to have him committed to the sanitarium. Due to a lot of hassles, the energy crisis, and a postponement, the play had to be rescheduled for 3:00 p.m. December 20. The play was performed before a small, but appreciative, audience. Was I there? (Mrs. Larson) The Prom was great but the intermissions were even better! (Brenda Blass, '75) Juniors and seniors congregated at the American Legion Hall, Saturday, December 22, for This Magic Moment, the 1973 Christmas Prom. Entertaining the group from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. was Snow from Lawrence, Kansas. Following tradition. Senior class president, Greg Hansen, presented the prom to the Junior class during intermission. After three postponements, waiting until the last minute to decorate, and having a band cancellation, everyone expected the worst. Fortunately, the Christmas Prom was not a total disaster, because of the hard work of a few loyal seniors. 14 Jr-Sr Prom We May Never Pass This Way Again was the theme for the annual Junior-Senior Prom held April 27 at the Beloit Elks Club. The evenings activities began with the traditional dinner. The menu consisted of barbecued beef, tossed salad, scalloped potatoes, rolls, green beans and ice cream. A short program followed with Jon Beeler, president of the Junior class, inviting everyone to the dance. Andra Flet-chall sang Time in a Bottle accompanied by Raelene Walker. Sophomore servers included Kathie File, Janet Fogo, Jane Hansen, Kris Me Clintock, Connie Schaffer, Brenda Treaster, Tammy Wilson, Greg Hewitt, Jim Hewitt, Joe LeSage, Mike Spicher, Tim Steiner, Dan Pruitt and Jeff Thomas. 16 19 Football Homecoming Football homecoming began with a traditional afternoon parade. Sophomores won first prize with their float, Making You an Offer. Queen candidates and their escorts were then introduced at the pep rally held downtown. At halftime of the Beloit-Concordia homecoming game to the music Let Me Call You Sweetheart, the Beloit Trojan Band and Pep Club formed a heart on the football field. Following this the queen candidates, Marsha Ackerman, Kathy Brummer, Pat Kadel and their escorts were introduced by Greg Hansen, the Master of Ceremonies. Marsha Ackerman was crowned 1973-74 Football Homecoming Queen. With a 33-0 victory for the Trojans, the Queen and her attendants, along with the BHS student body, danced to Justis at the Elks Lodge. During our four years of football we learned to play for and with each other.” (Steve Thompson 74) Football is played with controlled violence, a smart coach, and players who understand what it's all about. (Rick Hartenbower 75) Football is a demanding experience that helps to develop accord between all members of the team. (Carl Hobbs '75) Head Football Coach Clayton Williams sums up a winning season with a 6-3 overall record by saying, Coming within one step of our goal of winning the league was a great finish for our boys. Off to a good start, the Trojans tromped Riley County but then met defeat the following Friday against the high ranked Minneapolis Lions. But the gridders showed winning consistency in their next two league games with Belleville and Osborne. The Trojans saw their second defeat when they traveled to Marysville for the Bulldogs Homecoming. Determined to win their own Homecoming game, the Trojans captured a victory over the Concordia Panthers. Again, the gridders showed talent in winning two consecutive league games against Mankato and Smith Center. Losing a crucial game with Lincoln, which would have made Beloit NKL co-champions, left the Trojans with a second place title in league play. Assisting Coach Williams were coaches Jay Rowh, Ken Piazza, and Jerry Johnson. The players making the all-league team were seniors Bob Miller, Jerry Goddard, and Mike Gridley. Receiving honorable mention were Rick Hartenbower, Mark Studer, and Shelly File. Hartenbower was also named All-American in High School Football by Who's Who in High School Athletics. (Mark Melton, 77) It's fun but hard work. (David Zachary, '76) The BHS Cross Country team was seen in early fall jogging along at a steady clip preparing for their Cross Country races, which consists of two miles. With ten boys out, Coach Randy Woelk was able to enter a full team in the meets, something that he was not able to do the previous year. With only one returning letterman, Steve Zachary, the team was an inexperienced one but showed proof of their hard work by finishing fifth in the league meet. Steve Zachary, Gary Smith, Joey Cicanek, and David Zachary were the four boys that met the requirements to earn a letter. Coach Woelk reflects upon the season by saying, The Cross Country team had a full team in all the meets this year. Those Beloit runners that went to the league and regional meets placed well. Melton paces himself at Beloit meet. Beloit team gets a lead early in the race We had a ball, tennis ball that is.” (Jeri James, 75) We had a ball, tennis ball that is. (Jeri James, '75). (Bonnie Heiman, '76) I think it's fun and more people should go out for it. (Debbie Higgins, '77) Billie Jean Bean , as the tennis squad called their coach, led the second girls tennis team to an exciting season. Ten girls made up the team and sported new orange knit outfits. The season saw some close matches and great improvement was shown over the previous year. The netters played Ellsworth twice, losing 4-5 and 2-7; Chapman twice, losing 3-6 and winning 9-0; Concordia, winning 9-6; and Plainville, losing 2-7. No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams traveled to the Regional tourney at Russell. S. Ludwig and A. Guipre got a bye their first round but lost their second round. C. Olmstead and D. Deets won their first round but lost their second. Coach Sharon Bean comments on the season by saying, We've come a long way in just two years-it seemed like the first year all we could do is get shut out 0-8. But things looked better for us this year thanks to a 'little more experience' and a fine, enthusiastic group of girls who practiced hard- sometimes I think they thought they were at football practice. The candidates were Connie File, Natalie Hewitt, Cathy Kirgis, Susan Steiner, and serving as honorary queen was Susanne Fabricius, AFS student. Connie File was chosen 1973-74 Winter Sports Homecoming Queen. Connie and her attendants reigned over the varsity game which proved to be a narrow victory for the Trojans, with a final score of 59-57. Following the game a dance was held at the VFW Hall. Providing music was Gage. 32 Queen Connie File ■p ■ Winter Sports Homecoming Queen candidates and their escorts (From Left to Right) Mark Studer, Susanne Fabricius, Scott Reiter, Natalie Hewitt, Steve Thompson, Queen Connie File, Brian Jermark, Cathy Kirgis, Jack Black, Susan Steiner. ‘‘A goal a minute would have kept the Trojans in it.” (Mike Blass, 74) It's a fun sport! (Gary Smith, '75) I think that most of the credit for winning the games we did goes to the coach. (Steve Zachary, '74) If we would have had more points than our opponents at the end of the games, we would have had more victories. (Tim Steiner, '76) Fired up and with high hopes of giving Trojan basketballers a winning name. Smith Center Redmen saw defeat on the opening game of the season against Beloit. Spirits were still high as Trojans traveled to Belleville to meet a state-ranked team. During the last quarter, Beloit pulled within five points of tieing the score, but the game ended; Belleville 57, Beloit 44. The next two games went to opponents Minneapolis and Lincoln, but the Trojans bounced back to defeat Mankato. Coming close towards the close of the game, but then dropping back again, the Trojans lost again Concordia. Beloit fans saw an exciting Homecoming game as Osborne fell short two points when the buzzer sounded. Beloit, being invited to their first mid-state tournament, lost against three larger schools, taking eighth in tourney play. During the second half of the season, Beloit overtook Mankato, Osborne, and Concordia but fell to five other teams, one of them being a new opponent, Hoisington. With school and team spirit at it's utmost, Beloit traveled to Belleville for the Regional Tournament. Playing a very close and exciting game all the way, Trojans lost to Smith Center 55-53, closing out their season. Head Coach Jerry Johnson comments upon the season, We were a young and inexperienced team playing against strong competition. This was a challenge our players faced. Right from the start the B-team ran into trouble with turnovers and fouls as their record plunged to 1-6. The team, however started to play better fundamentally and advanced their record to 3-8 during midseason. Finally, working together as a team, the B-team won four out of its last five games raising their record to 7-9. The season ended with a determined and well balanced B-team, coached by Jay Rowh. (Jeff Tevis, '75) Ken Piazza's Trojan wrestlers had a successful season, capturing the NKL title and finishing with a 7-1 record. Beloit went up against Concordia, Riley County, Superior, Minneapolis, Osborne, Stockton, Ellsworth, and Belleville, losing only to Superior. Trojans proved their competitive spirit at the Osborne match, Beloit's toughest league rival, when Trojans won 27-25. Trojan grapplers participated in the Superior Invitational (3rd), where Wayne Petterson received Best Wrestler Award ; the Beloit Invitational (1st), and the District Tournament (1st). Eight Trojans went to Regionals, where Beloit took seventh, with Mark Studer and Jim Kindscher taking second, thus moving them on to state. (Frank Hollaway, '75) I get high on track. (Don File, '74) The funnest sport! (Randy Walker, '76) The 1974 boys track season saw some outstanding individual accomplishments. Mark Morrison set a new high school long jump record with a leap of 22'6 . He broke Don Widrig’s old record of 22'5 set in 1952. This brought Morrison a second place medal in the state outdoor meet. Bob Miller also traveled to state and captured fifth in the 100 yd. dash. Don File set a new record at the League Meet in the high jump, reaching 6'1 , and also brought home a gold medal. Three seniors stuck out the season: Bob Miller, Don File, and Mark Studer. Bob is a four year letterman in the sprints and relays. Don is a four year letterman in the hurdles and high jump. Mark is a two-year letter-man in the discus. Team accomplishments were not as good as expected due to some injuries to vital team members. Beloit did capture fourth at the Beloit Relays, missing third by one point; and also fourth at the League meet. The freshmen team had a good season, placing high on the charts in all of their meets. The Trojans were coached by Jay Rowh, with Bob Harrison and Clayton Williams assisting. Rowh states, Our best squad since 1971 (NKL Champs). We were hurt by injuries to all three of our sophomore letter-men. There will be seven returning iettermen for 1974-75. Track was a lot of hard work but I think we all appreciated Miss Bean working us. (Cathy Kirigs, '74). Coach Sharon Bean led her girls track team to an exciting and rewarding season. The highlight of the season was when the 440 yd. relay team, composed of Candy Van Pelt, Connie Schaffer, Rose Dobratz, and Marsha Ackerman, took third at the state outdoor meet held in Wichita. This is the first time in the history of BHS girls track that anyone has placed at state. The Trojans best track meet was the Regional meet where Beloit tied for fifth out of 32 teams. Candy Van Pelt took first in the 220 yd. dash. Cathy Kirgis placed third in the 110 yd. hurdles, the 880 yd. relay team took second and the 440 yd. relay team took third, enabling each of these girls to go to state. The track squad participated in meets at Beloit (dual), Lynn, Philfipsburg, Beloit Invitational, Concordia, Jewell, League Regional, and State. New records were set this year by the 440 yd. relay team, 880 yd. relay team, 880 yd. run by Michelle Guipre, and the 220 yd. run by Candy Van Pelt. Connie Schaffer tied the school record in the 110 yd. dash and Cathy Kirgis established the record in the 110 yd. hurdles. Coach Bean looks back on the season by saying, In early season we got off to a slow start but we got in gear at our Invitational. By the time League rolled around everyone was going great guns and at Regional we really outdid ourselves with six girls qualifying for state. 46 Coach Bean congratulates Candy after winning the 220 yd. dash at Regional. (Kae Weber, '75) The girls support of the boys plays a part in the boys performance. (Raelene Walker, '75) Pep Club spirit was dragging at the beginning of the school year, but with the help of the coaches, the Booster Club, and a different approach to Pep Rallies, Trojan spirit was revived. During each season, the head coach of each sport talked to Pep Club, explaining the rules of the game. The new money-making project was selling wrestling buttons along with concession stands for all sports being the major source of income. Looking for a change of uniforms. Pep Club voted on the pattern and fabric, but the idea never materialized. With high hopes for next year, plans for new uniforms, different offices in Pep Club, and new cheerleading squads are planned. 52 Joleen Munsey Dee Ann Monty Ronda Schramek Becky File Connie File Marlene Heidrick Luann Belknap Natalie Hewitt Terie Smith Carolyn Greif Judy Carver Nolta Oetting Raelene Walker Bev Ackerman Becky Berndt Tammy Wilson Janette Wilson Brenda Treaster Deanna Crandall Leila Case Nancy Oetting Judy Donker Pam Plymire Kelli Kruse Debbie Huggins Jeanne Gawith Angela Guipre Marilyn McPeak Carolyn Dobratz Sue Criswell Candy VanPelt Pam Underhill Melisa Arnold Jane Hansen Kris Tripp Chris Heidrick Loma Case Kris McClintock Kae Weber Dawn Thompson Jeri James Rachel Severance Brenda Blass Kody Kimerer Mari Clegg Kathy Huffman Connie Schaffer Tami Thierolf Susan Steiner Rose Dobratz Priscilla Thompson Marsha Ackerman Nancy Abercrombie Amy Ridgeway Rita Thompson Michelle Guipre Arlene Snyder Joan Weidenhaft Jeanette Hamilton Patty Miller Kim Em mot Janet Fogo Delores Deets Cathy Kirgis Andra Fletchall Pat Kadel Kelli Kruse-Sec.-Treas., Marsha Acker- Co-sponsors Mrs. Larson, Miss man-Pres., Kae Weber-Vice Pres. The evening seems peaceful now with the moon dressed in a new gown lying in its silver studded blanket of night. The early afternoon of spring is like my life with morning a misty dew ridden memory. With late afternoon only a whispered wish told to the sinking sun. With evening a quiet realm to escape to after a weary day. I wish I could put the early afternoon of spring in one endless room and live in that room the rest of my life. - Joleen Munsey - (Left to Right) Top: Joleen Munsey Keith Hamilton Greg Hansen, JoAnn Buckland. Comments and criticisms are given, along with different discussions on how to improve the writings. Creative Night was held in which various writings and skills were performed in front of an audience. For Creative Night, Tells performed two plays, I'll Never Promise, and The Dogs Turn Criminal. A typewriter routine, dueling banjos, assorted poems and songs were also presented. Windows, an annual book project of Tells full of poems and writings was published, and sold for $1.00. BHS Life Staff As editor of the BHS Life, I felt that the paper had a fairly successful year. The smallness of the class had some adverse affect, but it was also a benefit in that it provided for more individual assistance. I wish next years class lots of luck, they will probably need it. Journalism class this year was like a pair of old, smelly, well-worn tennis shoes. They've seen lots of good times but you're glad to get rid of them. It was fun but getting the paper out early seems to be an impossibility. Better luck next year. No one realizes what goes into making the paper until they are the ones doing it. Sometimes you feel it's a hopeless case but somehow we always pulled through! The best way during the year to get ideas was to read the exchange papers. Newspaper is really a good class if you want to learn what's going on in school. It was an enjoyable class, combining work with fun. The paper needs something. Maybe next years class will do something about it. The Staff, Back Row L to R - Kae Weber, Sylvia Ludwig, Melody Grose, Front Row - Angela Guipre, Scott Reiter, Mike Gridley, Teresa Waddell. Basic principles and techniques of cover design, layout, and yearbook typography were covered. The remainder of the year was spent searching for pictures and layouts to meet deadlines. New color, quotes from students, and theme ideas were added to highlight the 1974 yearbook. The class works hard to meet another deadline. (Susan Steiner, '74) The twenty-six members of Stu-Co, lead by President Leila Case, had a busy year. Besides furnishing a juke box and a candy machine for BHS students, the members planned and sponsored Homecomings, discussed plans for a student lounge, gave flowers to senior athletes, and chose lyceums. A Stu-Co Workshop in Emporia and an AFS Round-up in Manhattan were also attended by Stu-Co members. Leila proved to be a capable student leader. (Nancy Oetting, '76) Future Teachers found time the first and third Tuesday during activitiy period to teach at the Christian Church, and Elementary School for the full year. The true purpose of Y-Teens seems to be forgotten these days. (Nancy Abercrombie, '75) I liked Y-Teens better in Junior High because it was more organized. (Pam Plymire, '77) Parties, suppers, and banquets filled the Y-Teens year. They included a Christmas and Valentines party, Big and Little Sister banquet, plus a Mother-Daughter- Father banquet. Y-Teens also continued their support in sponsoring an underprivileged child. Up until the past year, Y-Teens had sponsored a child named Sarah Palero, but at the age of 14, her families' income became high enough for Sarah to be dependent on her family. You only have to learn the names of all the new faces (those older people) you now go to school with, choose from a greater variety of classes which to take, and learn how to cope with a greater amount of liberty. Freshmen become involved in student activities, organizations, schoolwork, and sports when they enter the halls of BHS. When the end of the school year finally comes rolling around, and the Class of '77 prepares to take the step of becoming sophomores, they will think how little being a freshmen has really affected them. However, though unno-ticeable as it is, most of these same freshmen will have matured greatly, and in the years to come will look back wishing to relive those carefree years. We Could Probably Get a Lot Done, If Everyone Put Out Some Effort. (Rachel Severance, 76) It seems like during your sophomore year you get in more trouble than any other years. (Cindy Nelson, '76) Some sophomores seem really immature, but within he next two years I hope they change. (Mary Schaffer, '76) The sophomore Class worked hard to raise money to be used for projects during their junior and senior years. Their efforts at making a float for the 1973 Football Homecoming proved worthwhile when they took first prize. Sponsoring a car wash seemed a good idea and the sophomores earned money for their efforts, with lots of luck bringing them good weather and sunshine on the appointed day. Although earning money is an important part of every class, the sophomores also seemed to find time out for different activities. Their participation helped to bring under and upperclassmen a little closer together. The sophomores of '76 were always looking for fun and good times, and perhaps just a little bit wishful. Looking forward to years ahead and looking back, remembering, sometimes regretting, but always enjoying thoughts of their sophomore year. (Nancy Abercrombie, ’75) There's just too much apathy in our class. (Joan Weidenhaft, '75) Money, money, money—always a problem. The Junior Class had bake sales, a play, concessions stands, a car-wash, and even saved labels in order to raise the money necessary to have the Junior-Senior Prom. An important event for most juniors during the year, was the arrival of their class rings in January. Although they will never have to worry about another class play, decorating elaborately for proms and homecomings, cheering at games, paying class dues, or just getting to class on time, they will be faced with one of the hardest decisions in their lives--what to do after graduation. Some will be looking forward to moving on; others will be stunned with the loss of good friends and teachers. But it wasn't until they were walking down the aisle with their diplomas in hand that they realized there was no turning back. She made her home with the Gerald Brummer family and quickly adjusted to the farm life.
