Streamers of rainbow colors highlighted the ceiling and the wrought-iron rails. The stage was enhanced by a suspended sun and a rainbow. A flowered en- Jr-Sr Prom tranceway and a fountain surrounded by trees and park benches completed the decorations. Teresa Waddell sang The Twelfth of Never accompanied by Becky Litton at the banquet. Janice Gersow, Jr. Class president, presented the prom to the Seniors as a going away present, and Carol Tolbert, Senior Class President, gave the Seniors acceptance and appreciation. Following the banquet, the Juniors and Seniors danced to the sound of White Clover. r Saturday jfl the Park 23 Marizel, escorted by Dana Cox, was the Honorary Queens Attendent for the Winter Sports Festival. Marizel (STANDING) stayed with the Jack Smith family. Barb, a senior at BHS was her American sister. PI Who's that?... . She's so little!... .How do you pronounce her name again? These are some of the comments heard in the halls of BHS since the new AFS student, Marizel Serracin, started her Senior year in Beloit. Marizel is living on the farm with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smith and Barb. Farm life is one of the things not new to Marizel in America since her parents own a coffee farm in Baquete, Panama. Some of the differences between America and Panama that Marizel named are food (she hates garlic and onions and loves chicken and noodles), not wearing uniforms to school, school hours (they go to school from 7 o'clock to 1:15). They take 8-12 subjects compared to our 6, and she never saw or heard of a cheerleader until coming to BHS. The summer in Panama is from December to April, the opposite of ours, and the one thing that Marizel looked forward to seeing was snow. 74 Stu-Co Lycems The student Council picked out many enjoyable lycems this year. Among them were: (TOP LEFT) Ray Hildebrand, comedian-musician; (BOTTOM LEFT) Washburn Rural High School, with their version of Fiddler on the Roof ; (TOP RIGHT) The Great Society Singers from Cloud County Community College; and (BOTTOM RIGHT) The Fred Cowan Puppets, performing Cinderella. Other assemblies include Colby JuCo Singers, Fort Hays Jazz Band, and Dave Workman, musician. o ll. LEVIN: My job is to see that the Beloit High School operates at maximum effectiveness for the growth and development of all its members. Thus my job includes general duties, management of the school, supervision of school clerical workers and records, planning the improvements of the educational program, cooperating in the community activities and evaluating the effectiveness of the school. Interviewer: How well does BHS prepare its students for the future at the present? 4r Interviewer: What improvements can an individual student make for the school? LEVIN: Each student at BHS can make improvements in the school by being a responsible citizen within the school. He must realize that the school is there for the good of everyone and not for just certain individuals. Each individual should work to the extent of his capabilities at all times. He should also be tolerant of other people's opinions and respect the rights of other students. Interviewer: Is BHS unique in any way? LEVIN: I feel that the Beloit High School is doing a pretty fair job in preparing students for college. Our curriculum is set up mainly for the college bound student. For those students not planning to attend college we are not doing as well. We need more exploratory courses in the vocational areas and for the non-college bound student. It is very difficult to judge how well a school is doing in the way of preparing the students for the future because we do not know what is in the future. LEVIN: I like to feel that Beloit High School is unique. However, this is hard to say because I am not that familiar with very many other high schools. I feel that a characteristic of BHS students is that they do not give up easily and are always in there trying to do better. LEVIN: My plans for BHS are that I would like for the Beloit High School to be the best school possible for each individual student. We know that students vary in their talents and capabilities. If each student in the Beloit High School is given the opportunity to develop his capabilities to the best of his ability, then the Beloit High School would be doing its job. I feel that the new high school building will do much to improve the efficiency of the school. Interviewer: Do you think most Beloit citizens are looking forward to the new high school? LEVIN: Yes, I feel that everyone in the school district is looking forward to the new high school. It will be a great improvement for the community and will be something that everyone can and should be proud of. Trojan Football The 1972 football team ended up with a mark of 5 wins and 4 losses. Relying heavily on young and inexperienced players, the Trojans dropped 2 of their first 3 games. Opening up a strong passing game againrt Osborne, the team went on to win 4 straight games, including a come from behind victory over a tough Concordia team. Three of the four losses were close games with the only bad defeat ooming at the hands of league champ, Minneapolis. Trojans selected to the all-league team were Jim Vetter, linebacker; Tom Anighi, tackle; and Marty Buckland, receiver. Trojan Basketball The old saying that good guys finish last held true for the 1972-73 varsity basketball team. With only one returning letterman and a new coach, the Trojans could manage only a frustrating 2-18 win-loss mark. This year the team lost many close games, due mainly to poor shooting and turnovers although they out-rebounded almost every team. One highlight of the season was holding undefeated and state ranked Bellville scoreless for a full quarter. Three returning starters should guarantee a better record for next year. The team ended the season and started next year's winning ways by beating Osborne for 3rd place in the district tournament. 1 100 Black and Gridley trying to stop a Thomas Moore Prep player. The first goal was realized and the team felt that their second goal was within reach. Coach Piazza worked with the team and things continued to look hopeful. The team spirit was high and it looked as if this might be the first undefeated season in wrestling history, then came defeat at the hands of the Osborne Bulldogs. The second goal was lost and so was the league title. But now the Trojans were preparing for the Beloit Tournament where the grapplers wanted to make a good showing. They took second place and things looked good again. Then came District Tournament where they took third. The season was over for the team, ending with a 6-2 record. One wrestler, Jim Kindscher, went to the state competition and placed second. 104 Coach Piazza makes last minute plans before Minneapolis match. This sounds like this years cross-country team. A grand total of six runners started out the season but only three finished. Dan Fogo senior, Steve Zachary junior, and Max Bean sophomore were coached by Randy Woelk and their manager was Mark Bean. The trio did as well as expected considering they could not place in any meets because it takes five runners to make a team, therefore they competed individually. 1 E Miss Bean instructs Bonnie in the art of serving Connie and Jeri warm up for a singles match. 109 Sylvia and Angela volley the ball during a practice. FRONT ROW-Bonnie Heiman, Joan Weidenhaft, and Connie Olmstead. Boys Track The 1973 track season was not too outstanding for the B. H. S. team. The team needed more depth and was hurt by the lack of upperclassmen on the team. There were, however, several individuals who consistently placed. Dan Fogo and Brian Snyder were the only seniors on the team. Fogo placed 4th at the state indoor in the long jump and placed sometime during the year in pole vault, low hurdles, triple jump, javelin, high jump, and ran on the mile relay team. Snyder ran on the medley, mile, and 880 relay teams. He also long jumped and ran the 220. Beloit should be stronger next year with letter-men Don File, Bob Miller, Mark Studer, Bob McGaughey, Doug Cox, Randy Walker, and Wayne Petterson all returning. 110 Ill Girls Track Although the year started out slow, many fine performances were turned in by the Girls' track squad. New records were set in the 880 yd. relay, 880 yd. dash set by Bonnie Heiman, and the 50 and 100 yd. low hurdles by Cathy Kirgis. Tying school records were Deb Stroup in the 100 yd. dash and the 440 yd. relay team. Cathy Kirgis and Amy Ridgeway represented BHS in the state meet at Wichita. This years squad competed in the Chapman Triangular, Mankato Invitational, Jewell Quadrangular, Beloit Invitational, Jewell Relays, Abilene Invitational, NKL Meet, Regionals at Hill City, and the State Meet, placing in the top four in many of them. Sharon Bean coaches the team. 112 The above girls represented BHS at the regional meet in Hill City. BHS students Amy Ridgeway and Cathy Kirgis traveled to the state meet in Wichita, after placing at regional. 113 Golf Squad 1973 NKL CHAMPS Steve Heidrick paced this year's golf squad by placing 3rd in the regional meet and 7th in the state tournament. Other members of the squad were Tom Arrighi, Ray Mehl, Keith Williams, Ken Christie, Charlie Wagner, Dean Speaks, Jim Beeler, Jon Beeler, Joey Cikanek, Mike Earle, and Mark Noah.
