A il iii ll .'1u - . mmmmm '7 f? -r lf '1 The main spring event of the school year is the Beloit Relays which is held the last week in April. Five hundred and fifty athletes from fifty-five A and B schools parti- cipated in the seventeenth annual Beloit Relays at Trojan Field on April 26, 1957. A Relays Queen and her two attendants award medals to the winners in each event. This outstanding track event is the leading one in the north central area of the state. Chestnut QLEFT ABOVEJ receives a copy of the school budget---and all other super- visory duties---in stride because he has been in no small way well acquainted with Beloit's school problems for twenty-eight years. E.M. , as he is familiarly addressed, has'been the hub of all school activities, and the progenitor of many. He initiated the Beloit Relays in 1941 and has successfully managed and conducted them since. He has been responsible for the development of Trojan Field, Athletic competitions of various types, and many other intra -school activities. Mr. Chestnut is a member of the Board of Di- rectors of the Kansas State Teachers Association and a life member of the N.E,A. QUPEPJINTENDENT Mrs. Martha Helmbrecht assists with absences--and all other matters in the principal's office. Superintendent John S. Morrell hands Superintendent- Elect E.M. Chestnut a copy of the school budget upon his retirement from the Beloit City Schools after serving thirty-seven years as teacher, principal, and superintendent. His chief concerns have been the betterment of the school's curriculum, tenure of teachers, build- ing facilities, and the school budget. The new Ele- mentary School Building constructed for use in 1956, thus combining the Rogers and Field Building elementary grades, was Mr. Morre11's crowning achievement. S As a World Fellowship proiect, seventy foreign pen pal names were placed with girls at B.H. Three boxes of groceries were given to families in Beloit as part of the Heart Sister project. Two cabinet members attended summer conference at Camp Wood in June of 1957, and ten girls were in Republic for the fall conference. Miss Gillmore attended advisors' seminar at Arkansas City in September. The Beloit YWCA gave the Y-Teen Club a lace table cloth and sent three girls to the l958 summer conference. Three State Farmers--Jim Kadel, Bil Bunger, Richard Heiman lelected State FFA Vice-Presidentl--and an Honorary State Farmer, John S. Morrell, were all chosen from the Halls of Troy. The chapter was honored for the fourteenth consecutive year by the state association as a member of'the Gold Emblem Division--highest state honor a chapter can attain. Preliminaries were run off before noon under the supervision of Relays Manager E. M. Chestnut, head starter Sid Smith, and a host of capable helpers. Six ' records fell to new performances. A twelve man team from Attica U65 miles distant, coached by former B.H.S. coach J. Allen Murry, took home first place Class B trophy with a 50 point total. Wakefield was second with 31 and Agenda third with 23 points. Clay Center's Tigers under coach Otto Unruh successfully defended their championship title of three years' standing with a 43 point total in Class A competition. Chapman was second with 32 and Hays third with 31 points. Beloit ranked fifth with 20- points, outclassing all other NCKL contestants.
