English Knowledge is power. Knowledge of one's native language distinguishes the learned from the illiterate, the success from the failure. An extensive understand- ing of our own English language is essential if we are to become successful in any phase of the business or social world. At Belmont Senior High School a strong English de- partment provides superb instruction in the areas of grammar, research, and literature. The study of these basic subjects teaches us how to express ourselves clearly, and to appreciate the beauties of our own lan- guage. Journalism instructs us in the art of writing, while speaking is the basis of all our social relationships. The incredible success of our Drama Club is a tribute to a varied number of inspiring teachers, both English and otherwise . . . The highest function of the teacher consists not so much in imparting knowledge as in stimulating the pupil in his love and pursuit. Our English department has fully accomplished this primary aim. By inspiring us in the study of the English language, they have supplied us with abundant and invaluable knowledge. Mr. Dewey K. Russell B.S., A.S.T.C. 4 English Mrs. Lucille Hall A.B., Salem College English Mrs. Francis Medlin A.B., University of S. C English
