Today is a mo- ment, a day, an entire year. It is a year filled with mo- ments of friendship, excitement, study, trial, and attain- ment. .For those who have sought and found and for those whose quest is yet unsatisfied, our days are numbered. Cherished thoughts are many as we recall those incom- parable days of enthusiasm, optimism, and determination. Whether cheering our team to victory, cramming for an examination, or simply enjoying the companionship of our fellow students, these are the memories that we will come to cherish in our future days. Whether we be the green but eager sophomore, the expectant and hard-working junior, or the self -assured, confident senior, we have, in some way, been affected by this year. Our teachers and friends have brought about momentous changes in our interests, our activities, and our attitudes. We have advanced in emotional maturity, developed in character, and learned through experience-- these are invaluable accomplishments that will guide us into that new frontier , the ever present challenge of the future . . . ' All too soon today becomes yesterday, and only the future remains to be seen. We have an obligation to our school, teachers., parents, and ourselves. We must now begin to fulfill this obligation--today, not tomorrow. Yes, soon only ai dream of this wonderful year will remain. The CLARION STAFF has tried to preserve. many of the memories that have been combined to make THIS oUR YEAR. ' , BELMONT? 5 i 2 H l L 1 Y 0 5 SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL , 2 gn. ,QM A. We, who are a part of all that we meet, continue to seek for such inspira- tional individuals. Within the limits of our school is found such a person whose high ideals and abilities blended with interest, experience, and enthusiasm, have infinitely enriched our lives. By being a capable teacher, and a devoted friend and guide, he has gained the love and respect of all his students. Here the students come to fill their minds with the abundance of reading awaiting them. Under the skilled supervision of the librarian, the door is always open to this storehouse of knowledge. I7 jd' Mrs. Marie M. Watkins A.B., Winthrop College Library Science English Knowledge is power. Knowledge of one's native language distinguishes the learned from the illiterate, the success from the failure. An extensive understand- ing of our own English language is essential if we are to become successful in any phase of the business or social world. At Belmont Senior High School a strong English de- partment provides superb instruction in the areas of grammar, research, and literature. The study of these basic subjects teaches us how to express ourselves clearly, and to appreciate the beauties of our own lan- guage. Journalism instructs us in the art of writing, while speaking is the basis of all our social relationships. The incredible success of our Drama Club is a tribute to a varied number of inspiring teachers, both English and otherwise . . . The highest function of the teacher consists not so much in imparting knowledge as in stimulating the pupil in his love and pursuit. Our English department has fully accomplished this primary aim. By inspiring us in the study of the English language, they have supplied us with abundant and invaluable knowledge. Mr. Dewey K. The most important division of the French Department is the French Club, an extracurricular instrument designed to delve deeper into the lives of the people of France to gain a keener understanding of their ways through the experiences of attending French lec- tures and movies, eating in French restaurants, and singing French songs. The study of the ex- citing, intriguing realm of France, enhanced by the sometimes hilarious, sometimes serious guidance of Miss Sharpe and Miss Green, creates a marked feeling of accomplishment for every student and an unforgettable memory for those who traverse its world. v ' I fi 'FTP .li , . r 'St .gg r p4 42? 15' sail l'W7l 7 '7'f5,' F ar, , O L A5 V LL 'Aki ,I gielELmllll!ll- e UNM! Such basic courses as algebra and business math are both prerequisite to higher mathemat- ics courses and helpful in solving practical pro- blems. Geometry, also a prerequisite to higher mathematics, is a necessary course for anyone who plans aliberal education. Trigonometry and advanced math, studied the senior year, are pre- requisites for the future college student. With such a capable mathematics depart ment at B.S.H.S., we will undoubtedly be well prepared for the complicated world of tomorrow. 22 I K Science Science: the how and why of all that we survey, to satisfy our young and curious minds, to give us a clear and accurate under- standing of our world, to instill in our minds and hearts the desire to know the unknown, to explain the complicated, and to discover the yet undisclosed facts about our universe are the basic reasons that we study science. In a biology class we learn the beauty of life through an understanding of life's pro- cesses, cycles, and characteristics. In chemistry we grasp the concept of how every constituent of our universe, no matter how large or how small, is constructed. In physics we come to know the basic pat- terns and laws of which many of the forces and bodies in our universe conform. Through able science instructors we learn to understand and to love the unique and in- finite beauty of our universe. 23 X . The ball games where everyone screamed Until hoarse- The big wins, the heart breaking losses, The parties that were carefully planned- The ones that just happened, Unforgettable, embarrassing moments Both in class and out, The exams that were dreaded for weeks- Everyone somehow lived through, The grades that made you proud- The ones that made you miserable, Sophomores, juniors, and seniors alike Became as one To share these moments of High school life. The day that deep voice called you To the office, The time you had nerve enough to skip, The terror of getting caught, Teachers you will never forget- The few you would like to, Shindigs, senior rings, and plays Junior-Senior, Graduation. These are the memories everyone Remembers in a different way For each event was special in A different way to everyone. All these memories--along with the Faces of friends and classmates Will go with us carefully enfolded In the leaves of this book, The 1966 CLARION.
