Belmont ' s ad- ministration is like that. If all of us, both students and teachers, could follow any of the administrators around for just one week, we would begin to understand the magnitude — and the near impossibility — of their jobs! Just stop and think — they are at almost all sporting events, dances, PTSA meetings, advisory council meetings, plays, assemblies, and myriads of other events. They have to settle disputes between students, soothe the nerves of disgruntled teachers, appease area administrators; and, in case that is not enough, run an occasional candy drive or interpret and implement all those stupid, stupid man- dates from the local and state boards of education. Underrated and not fully appreciated? For surel ■TOP LEFT: Maria Tostado. Assistant Principal; Minnie Fitzgerald. Assistant Principal. ■CENTER: George Clark. More than half of us were tenth graders, only one of us had ever written for the SENTINEL before; and we had a new sponsor. Mrs. Sharon Oh. Our main challenge in the beginning of the fall semester was writing the first issue. Before we could write we had to learn to work as a team and to accept large responsibilities, meet editors ' deadlines, write accurately, and work extra hard to get layouts and stories to the printshop on time. We managed to get the first issue out, and many more followed it-, but the SENTINEL STAFF should not get all of the glory. Very special thanks go to our sponsor, Mrs. Oh; Mr. Jim Gillespie, graphic arts instructor, and his print shop crew; and all of the students and faculty who supported their school newspaper, the SENTINEL. 86 SENTINEL STAFF. Together the Swinging Sweethearts worked hard during the season to make each half time show something to be proud of. With a new band director and only 25 returning members, the Sweethearts went into action. Our big debut started the season out right with the drill team performing to PEG and our very own Fight Song. Other great crowd pleasers were at the Garfield half time show when the drill team came out on the field with long black scarves and performed to Night Train. The most unique performance was at the Sentinels ' Homecoming. The twenties theme fitted right into the show as the Sweethearts, dressed in fringes, beads, and silver bands with feathers, came out on the field in two solid blocks and exploded open into the number twenty. The drill team worked hard throughout the football season, but the year was not over for the Sweet- hearts. In fact, it was only the beginning to prove the potential of this year ' s unit. The band and drill team took part in the Annual Band and Drill Team Competition held at Birmingham High School. By placing in the top four out of fifteen schools, the drill team with their winning performance went to the LA. Sports Arena for the championships. It was the best performance of the year and although we ' re not number one in the eyes of the judges, we were number one in the eyes of the Sentinels as well as in our hearts. With every working body there is a backbone that must hold a group together. Our backbone was a hardworking pair, Mr. Ken Hoffman and Ms. Colleen Kunitomi. without whose help nothing would have been possible. Also our hard working drum major Frank Gonzales and Drill team captain Cindy Ruiz must be commended. Yes. together we grew strong and kept the faith and pride that makes being a Sweetheart something to be proud of. and only as a whole could we have succeeded to be number one because together We are the Swinging Sweethearts. 88 JOfe ' 9 ' ■-J tK - -. lji an (WnarJde Cecilia Bltla ' H erced uong hns Nagatani V X May Joan Law 90 Olga Herrerj au Huerta Mane ShimamoJ - ' _Diarie Perez m HBari EscobetkT 1 w JUT %. m T 91 HOMECOMING 92 ■OPPOSITE PAGE. This year the Band and Drill Team once again made it to the All-City Band and Drill Team Competition at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. They didn ' t get there by just blowing air through some instruments or pounding sticks on the drums. They got there by dedication and practicing their music every day. The band has put in a lot of work and time throughout the year. It is a great accom- plishment, an honor, for them to go to the Los Angeles Sports Arena to play against other schools bands to see what band really is number one in the City. - J MAJORETTES FLAG TEAM ■TOP LEFT. This organization provides any student the opportunity to express his talent through public speak- ing by competing against other schools such as Marshall. Hollywood. Crenshaw and many others. We may not have been as successful this year as we have been in the past, but we shouldn ' t be disillusioned by facts and statistics. Our Forensics Club will emerge into an empire once again, and you can count on Belmont For- ensics being No. 1! By Annabelle Barrios ■TOP OF THE PAGE: Coach Voisard talking to students. ■BOTTOM LEFT: Liza Braganza and Melodie Bahou with their plaques. BBOT- TOM RIGHT: Muriel Ho and Christine Sam are also displaying their plaques. 113 For many years, the long-established organi- zations of Belmont High School have brought many and various activities to the schools and. in the process, enriched the student body and the community. In recent years, another group — the Drama Department — has been growing steadily and has taken its place as one of the great organizations of Belmont. Productions such as the well-remembered BYE, BYE BIRDIE, and last year ' s even more successful ANNIE GET YOUR GUN have giv- en Belmont students motives for involving themselves in school activities. A dedication of summer to football and strenuous workouts made the season one to which we could look forward. Our first game was against the Grant Lancers on our own Montgomery Field. The defense, led by Robert Lyles and Kenny Kolb, played a tremendous game-, and our offense put enough points on the board to give the Sentinels their first win of the season. The next game was against the Fairfax Lions at Belmont. This was Family Night and the Sentinels played a hard-hitting game but came up short of victory with a 7-0 loss. The third game of the season was against the tough Venice Gondaliers at Venice. The Sentinels played a strong game but injuries to Skip Clark and Joe Macias proved costly as Belmont came up at the short end with their second loss of the year. The next game was against the Garfield Bulldogs. The Sentinels, out for revenge, were led offensively by Rob Lyles and Bing Quon-, and the defense held Garfield to limited yardage. The next game, against Lincoln, was the season opener. The offense led by Fernando Acosta and Steve White touchdowns gave the Sentinels their first league victory, 14-0. The next game was against the Marshall Barristers and it turned out to be the most disappointing game of the season. The next Friday Belmont faced the very strong Wilson Mules at Wilson. The Sentinels outplayed the city champions during the first half with touchdowns by Steve White and Calvin Hosozawa. The halftime score was a well-deserved 13-13 tie. The second half was all Wilson, and the Sentinels lost their second league game of the season. The next game was Belmont ' s homecoming against the Eagles of Eagle Rock. The Sentinels jumped out in front on a James Bolden interception touchdown and Rob Lyles breaking off a 50-yard run without looking back. The defense was led by Mario Cea and Juan Martinez who played a consistent game. The last game of the season was against the Franklin Panthers at Franklin. A Belmont win would have put the Sentinels in the playoffs, but Franklin capitalized on several Belmont mistakes and handed the Sentinels their final loss of the season 22-1. Although Belmont ' s season ended on a down note, the players seemed to come out ahead. They learned togetherness, and they also learned to love and respect one another. The players will cherish this forever. by Calvin Hosozawa and Mario Zamudio 118 ■i p-. r ,- ■; ABOVE. ROW ONE, Juan Martniez. Bing Ouon. Samson Ruiz, Erick Barillas. Tony Fiallos. Bernie Araral. We had great expectations — yet with small, but costly errors, we ended up placing last in league. In our first game of the season against Lincoln, our fullback George Reynoso had one of his best games — he gained over a hundred yards - — nevertheless, our mental mistakes killed us. Our biggest error was that we couldn ' t hold on to the ball. We fumbled eight times. In our game against Marshall, we corrected our errors and came back all fired-up. We started out pretty good by taking a 7-0 lead. In our kick-off, the Barristers ran the ball back for a touchdown. Two more mental errors defeated us. leaving us short once again 21-7. In our game against Wilson, according to the coaches, we played one of our best games — but the score told a different story. The only score was a field goal by Gene Hanna. The final score was 38-3. We had a long season with a lot of heartbreaks, but we pulled through with our heads up high. Even though we lost all of our games, I think the Bees learned a lesson. Thanks to the coaches for really trying to make winners out of us. By Gene Hanna ■ABOVE. Bee Football Team BRow I: J. Vacili. D. Ham. N. Torres, F. Nomura. G. Gutierrez. J. Zaragosa. M. Celestino. G. Since 1966 Belmont has lost the league title only three times-in 1971. 1972. and 1974. Looking at it another way. in the last 14 years. Belmont has won II league championships! What has been the reason behind this success? The players have had no small part of the success, but every year the players have been different. The rules in basketball have changed, the competition has changed, even our gym was changed. One thing has remained constant— one thing! The coach. Tom Arima. To know the man is to know the reason for Belmont ' s basketball success. Quiet, humble, solid. His respect and love for high school kids is rare and genuine, and he gets maximum effort from them . He understands them because he is one of them— a product of similar circumstances and environment. And he knows the game of basketball! This year the Sentinels played some of the best basketball seen at Belmont in recent years— they had to because the league was tough this year. Marshall and Lincoln both had excellent teams, and Eagle Rock and Franklin played well enough to scare Belmont. But the hoopsters came through with just one league loss and that was to the strong Marshall team. Sammy Banuelos has already taken his place among Belmont ' s greats like Coleman, the Thomas Boys Reid, Kasdorf, Valenzuela. Dominguez, Rojas, Thompson, and so forth. Sammy is the perfect basketball player— he is unselfish and he does it all. Robert Lyles strength, hustle, and natural ability added a dimension up front that most teams dream about. One of the most hustling and exciting players to ever wear the Sentinel Green was Calvin Hosozawa. His presence sparked many a rally. James Bolden had to be the biggest surprise of the season. He came out of nowhere to admirably fill in a vacancy in the back court. Intense, versatile, and talented Micah Harrison quietly and without fanfare did a great job wherever the coach played him. Dawson and Pabellano logged plenty of playing time because they had that Havlicek quality of coming off the bench and getting the team moving when it was sputtering. Terrence Barnett had some great moments, too. with his ability to block shots and his perimeter shooting. Busque, Garcia and Jackson rounded out this year ' s winners! What a great bunch of guys! The well-conditioned athlete who runs this demanding sport tests his stamina on an uneven terrain that stretches out over two miles. Not only is cross-country a grueling sport — it goes virtually unnoticed and unsung. Most students at Belmont know stars in football, basketball, track, and so forth, but how many of you know the stars of cross-country? How many of you can tell how each of the cross- country teams finished in the Northern League finals? Did you know that the Varsity and Tenth Grade teams finished first in the finals? Did you know that the Tenth Graders went on to finish seventh in city? Not badl Not bad at all! At Belmont the cross-country team is coached by veteran Gordon Weisenburger — and just like the sport he coaches, he is low-key and unsung. All he does is produce winners. - - - 8r k  1 ■- . . ' . The team is very young but has a good group of people who has the heart and the desire to win. There are some new faces and there are some old ones, but the things that are in their minds is to play hard, have a good time and play to win. The team got off on the right foot with a win over Marshall 6-4, but because of alot of rain it remains to be seen how good they really are. Coach Arima said that this year ' s team is young but the players are very versatile. They all are capable of playing two or more positions-some may play four or more. They are a great group of kids, and the season looks good. ■TOP- LEFT TO RIGHT. Bing Quon (Junior), George Reynoso (Junior). Ricky Herrera (Senior), Arturo Gomez (Junior). Javier Garcia (Junior). The varsity team is made up of a strong field of players who excel not only in ability but also in experience. Returning varsity players are the gifted Nick Tchalakian, great athlete Ben DeJesus, the ever-resourceful Robert Garza, the versatile Johnny Torres, and hard-working Jorge Gonzalez. New additions to the team are Danny McMahon, Paul Choe, Andy Rienthong, James Aguilar, and Eliu Martinez, all of whom show great potential and promise to be great competitors. But all this talent and ability would have been wasted without the coaching efforts of Tom Stevenson who has managed to refine every player ' s game with great dedication, while at the same time, training, directing, and leading them to a winning form. The junior varsity tennis team also has the talent to win the league championship. Led by Carlos Maulini and Joaquin Wong, it prom- ises to be the strongest junior varsity team in years. Again, Coach Stevenson has put a great amount of effort and coaching ability for the sake of the team, to improve it, and to make it a winning team — and he has succeeded! --- •-gv ' -r- - 156 I t. si WW p ic = V ' v Si k ,■v ;„„„ — « Bt ! ■Mi Cm w . t-- IL ff v ■OPPOSITE PAGE, TOP: The Varsity Team. Gymnastics Is considered a spectator ' s sport. Some people think that gymnasts are crazy, because of the peculiar stunts they perform. The fact is that those peculiar stunts take hours of practice. Every day, Belmont gymnasts spend three to four hours a day working out. Once these gym- nasts accomplish a certain move, they must do it over and over until they get it right. After obtaining several moves, they must compose a routine which must be executed with strength, balance, and endurance. This year ' s team has the ambition to be the best. We have some newcomers on the team — Gustavo Aquino, Danny Chan, Miguel Gonzales, Julio Navarett, Al- berto Tzec, and Rick Del Muro. They all show great poetneial and the desire to be fine gymnasts. Returning from last year are Hien Do and Efren Jake who execute their various forms on the pommel horse. Dexter Gonzalez will never cease to amaze his fellow teammates with his form and agility. Finally, we have Eddie Wong, Michael Chow, Arthur Wong, and Edmund Tomsio. These four gymnasts have been on the team for three years. Eddie Wong, a specialist, constantly receives high scores for his pommel horse routine. Michael Chow is first man on vault and on rings. He has a strong chance to go undefeated in Northern League. This year Arthur Wong is competing in three events — floor exercise, pommel horse, and vault. When he does not take a first place, he usually takes a second or third. Edmund Tomsio is our all-around competitor. He competes in all six events. He excels in the parallel bars. The Belmont gymnastics team is possible only with the coaching, leadership, and guidance from Coach Sei Miyano. 162 163 4 iny v ■TOP LEFT: Edmund Tomsio doing what he does best. ■TOP RIGHT: Eddie Wong executing frnt scissors on side horse. The membership for both organizations is restricted to enthusiastic seniors who meet the rigid academic and citizen standards required by the two traditionally outstanding groups. The Ladyes have always been respected as representaives and hostesses of the school, based on the many contributions and distinguished service to the school and community. Today, they uphold the traditions and high standards of the school by serving with endless enthusiasm and cheerfulness. The motivation and spirit of the Knights has lent a special meaning to Belmont pride. Like the chivalrous knights of old, they sincerely and cheerfully devote themselves to the service of Belmont and the surrounding community. They serve Belmont in a cornucopia of other activities with pride and dignity. ■ROW I. A. Lee. D. Tsui. M. Tuschi. BROW 2: M. Choi, L. Lum. R. Munoz, B. Lim, S. Kwan. L. Tsui, P. Sui, L. Tashiro. T.
