THESE CONSCIENTIOUS, HARD-WORKING LEADERS, promoted the kick-off drive to start our Electric Scoreboard Fund from the collec- tion of paper; they coordinated many dances and assemblies for the enjoyment of all stu- dents. Besides representing Belmont at vari- ous co nferences, these officers attended foot- ball and basketball games, sold booster tags and helped the P.T.A. sell refreshments. FACULTY AND STUDENTS alike are grateful for the time and effort they have dedicated to Belmont. WITH THE HELP OF THE STUDENT BODY and under the guidance of Miss Poore, Belmont ' s Summer Student Council accomplished the tasl s set before them by the midterm change. THE TWO MAIN ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE COUNCIL for the Semester of S ' 60 were the setting up of a new Clean Campus Program, since the previous one had become inef- fective, and the raising of additional money for the elecrtic scoreboard fund, on which Belmont has been working for a long time. This fund was considerably increased as a result of the successful cookie drive, carried oui on the Spring Semester. FOREIGN ADJUSTMENT BELMONT IS ONE OF THE FEW SCHOOLS IN AMERICA that has a comprehensive and graduated program for foreign students. This program gives our school an interesting, cosmopolitan atmosphere, since at Belmont are found students from forty-three different coun- tries. An amazing thing about the Foreign Adjustment Program is that English can be taught to students from scratch, and some are able to graduate with their own class at the end of a three year period. The purposes of Belmont ' s foreign student program are to teach English, to teach customs of the United States, and to give foreign students a chance to get to know people while becoming acquainted with school rules, procedures, and activities. TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SIX FOREIGN STUDENTS make up one- seventh of Belmont student body. There ore four main groups of foreign students. The largest group is of students from foreign coun- tries. Then there are the ones classified under on act of Congress as i mmigrants. Next, there are the students that were born in the United States, have gone to a foreign country, and are now back. Finally, there are those who have just received their citizenship. These students, who are both cooperative and appreciative, con- tributed greatly to the school spirit at Belmont. THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION, under the able sponsorship of Mrs. Evans, is a governing body, made up of 2 representatives from every FA English class, and include any other foreign students who wish to join. The I.S.O. plays a very important part in our school. As part of its many functions, the I.S.O. strives to develop leadership which will result in great participation in the activities of the school in general. Our Student Body President Hector Guillen, and Student Body Historian Helga Adamczyk, (Summer ' 60), are good examples of what the I.S.O. helps its members to achieve. In many of the games our boys battled into the fourth quarter on the edge of victory, only to have it snatched from their hands. They never gave up, though, as v e saw in the Marshall Game. Many soy this was the hardest played game they ever saw as the two teams went into the final minutes tied up 13-13. But once again the Fourth Quarter Blues overcame us, and Marshall won 25-13. A FEW OF THE PLAYERS who never called it quits were Co-Captains Abe Polsky and Gale Hick- man, Wayne Saito, Ruben Cavez, and Carl Lundgren. Outstanding in every game, Gale was honored by being placed on the All-Northern League 1st Team. VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM lop row; C.CAPPS, manager; D.KUHN, manager; J.TORRES, W. They began this season with only one returning letter- man, Co-Captain Dick Drogin. The squad started the season like lambs, but was full of drive and came roaring through like lions. Along the way they upset some of the top teams in the league. THE B TEAM, having a bad year, nevertheless never gave up. With a little luck they could have won a few more games and been a strong challenge for League honors. Such stars as Paul Shishima, captain and second leading scorer in League, never gave up trying. THE C TEAM was composed of a fine group of boys whose hard playing garnered third place in League. THE TEAM WAS LED by players like Co-Captain Mel Cassio, who placed on the First Team of the Northern League, and Mike Krause and Kingsley Van Ess, who received honorable mention. The sup- port for the J.V. Othon Garcia, who was honored by being chosen to carry the traditional Olympic Torch, is the victor in the long and grueling Mile. Bel- mont is strong this year in Field Events: Dick Drogin is heading for the Northern League crown in the Pole Vault, and Abe Polsky aims for victory in the Shot Put. Promising 11th graders that will return to carry on the Varsity Team will be Dick Drogin and Jerry Valenzuela in the Pole Vault and High Jump. At the end of the day, the Relay Team is out there to bring in the final points to win by a wide margin. THE B TEAM BOASTS THREE fine 120-Yard Hurdlers, Steve Yusa, Fred DaSolla, and Arthur Jackson. In the Field Events we have two fine Pole Vaulters: Charlie Palmersheim and Joe Cabellero. In the Shot Put there are Francis Thompson and Franklin Quan. Richard Al- vidrez breezes past the finish line of the 1320-Yard Run with his great strides and powerful kick. With all the fine runners and the wins in the Field Events, the team should win the Northern League crown. THE C ' S HAVE COME THROUGH with a sparkling season and have good possibilities in the League. FREE EXERCISE — Reggie Wong is expected to take League, perhaps place in City. Tenth grader Sheldon Kiyabu and eleventh grader Ernie Tobias show considerable promise. HORIZONTAL BAR — our weakest event has some promising tenth graders such as Gerald Evey and Lloyd White. SIDE HORSE — First man Eiii Nakamura (eleventh grade) along with Enrique Escarcega and three other hard working tenth graders. PARALLEL BARS — Ernie Tobias stands a good chance to place in League,- Eiji Nakamura is pushing him hard and might also take a League berth. LONG HORSE — Stan Alvidrez should place high in League. Ernie Tobias is second man. RINGS — Ernie Tobias, contender for the League title, is first man; Joe Perlin is a strong second man. TLJMBLING — Reggie Wong and Tom Kanaly are both improving steadily.
