CONDIT William Condit 1 4 il .J -1 6 i138-l3ril1 ilJi:llS In September, 1923, with a student body of five hundred and seventy-five composed entirely of ninth and tenth grade students, Belmont High School had its beginning, Early in the semes- ter a contest was held with a prize offered to the student suggesting the name which would be selected for the school paper that was about to be pub- lished. The Sentineln was the name selected and in November of 1923 the first copy made its appearance. During the following mont its columns car- ried a story of how green and black had been selected as the official school colors. Four years later, in 1927, Belmont received the highest accreditation pos- sible scholastically from the University of California, which it has maintained to the present day. The motto from the beginning has been Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve. Following this admonition its graduates have gone forth to serve and have dis- tinguished themselves in many lines of endeavor. w xiii- -i. I 2 X i f f 001 565 V It is the striving for perfection, not its attainment, which makes us better and stronger individuals. Likewise, the striv- ing for a perfect school will make Belmont High School better and stronger. justifi- able pride in the traditions and honorable record of many students is the heritage of all Hill-Toppers. The faculg' and adminis- tration share this pride. I nd a personal happiness in being a part of this excellent school where democracy is lived each day in each classroom hour. PAULINE MATHER SXVAIN. Each of- ficer did outstanding work in making every senior activity a big suc- cess, including the first off-campus prom for a long period of time. Among the officers for the fall, Charles Munoz acted as president, while Josie De Falla served as vice-president, with Eun- ice Quan as secretary. Spring officers included George Hirai, president, Eunice Quan, vice-presi- dent, and Barbara Wong, secretary. With this, we bring to a close the long-to-be-re- membered class of Sum- mer, 1958. The phrase Extra Added Attraction becomes really meaningful when it is applied to the Mixed Chorus, and it seems natural to so apply it. Their performances at Christmas, Graduation, etc., are always noteworthy for contributing that little extra something that adds so much, they never fail to attract, and they are attractive. That magic X ingredient that adds so much zest and zing to athletic contests, that lends life and lift to assemblies and that stirs the emotions in performances such as the Christmas presentation, Graduation and Open House, is provided by the Bel- mont Band. Under the brisk baton of its director, Mr. Mehr, it is fast achieving major status as one of our finest organizations. The pre-season games indicated rough weather ahead, and the prediction, un- fortunately, proved to be a sound one. Regular league play started off with a loss to Lincoln, and as the season progressed, we repeatedly failed to break into the win column. The record, frankly, is nothing to cheer about. But there's a lot more to foot- ball than the score. For one thing, there was the spirit of the team. They were playing rough, hard football all the way, in every game right down to the final gun. Although there weren't individual stars to rate the headlines, Bill Chiles, Charles Berrard, Shig Mi- yabe, and joe Parada were threats on offense, while jerry Darr, Bob Orantes, Allen Haynes, and Ray Garcia were defensive stalwarts. Allen Haynes earned the distinction of being named to the second D ' team of the all Northern League choices at the center position. All in all, Belmont has been up there before, and we'll be up there again, we have no doubt. But the point to remember is this: win, lose, or draw, we had a represen- tative Belmont Varsity this year that we can be proud of. And we are. T NOD! Coach Evans 4 l Q 3 - . FX - - ROI! I: A. Finding their mis- takes by trial and error, they became a team to beat as the dark horse of the league. Coach Scher's victorious team ended the season with a nine and one record, putting Belmont in a tie with Lincoln for League honors. - Leading the team were William Ward, chosen North- ern League Player of the year, Maurice Lewis, first team Northern League, Roy Romero, honorable mention, and co-captains Howard Sakamoto, second team all-North- ern, and Dickie Asari. Composing the remainder of the team were jerry Smith, Curtis Lowe and Robert jones. C95 Led by co-captains Wellington Hall and Horace jackson with eight and ten points average respectively, the C basketball team took second in Northern League competition with a six wins and four losses record. With only three returning lettermen and the rest tenth graders coach Scher produced one of the fine teams of the Northern League. Varsity Our Varsity hoopsters ended their Northern League season with a four and six record. Belmont placed two members on the All Northern League teams: Jon Hall made the first team at the center position with a 14.1 p.p.g. average, and John Sepulveda was selected as second team guard, with a 13.0 p.p.g. average. The starting five for the 1958 season were: at center, Jon Hall, forwards, Glen Drogin and Bill Tillery, and at guards, john Sepulveda and Fred Lanuza. Others contributing sterling performances for Bel- mont were Ramon Garcia, Robert Gameros, George Risch and Hector Navarro. vts Our newly-inaugurated V. cagers ended the season with an impressive record. Scoring highly and playing excellent ball throughout the season were John Keeler and William Sims. Most of the defeats were by very small margins, and the team came very close to taking the crown. Coach Arima looks forward to a promising Varsity next year with some of the V. players to bol- ster the roster. Jockeying for first string positions all year were Milton Wilson, Steve Milankove, John Gar- ner, Richard Fong and Russ Reynolds. 5 gi-. W Q e sry. N X Q Qin...- 1 i 51 M '? Yr v- rn varslt Cross Country Belmont's iron-lunged men traversed the Griffith Park trails without much success this year, although all three teams scored pre- loop wins over Fairfax, Marshall, and Los Angeles. The Varsity and V. teams were riddled by sickness but did manage to come through with some impressive wins. john Nichol- son, two year man, returned to break his own school record for the mile and eight-tenths course that winds over hills and through val- leys. Also, the future looks very bright, as four lettermen will be returning off the varsity, Stan Sakamoto, Earl Stanford, Tyrone Swader, and David Espinosa. The latter took second in the City consolation race. The Tenth Grade had the best record of the three teams, with Rafael Hernandez achieving individual honors with a first in the Northern League finals at U.C.L.A. and breaking the tenth grade record for the Griffith Park course.
