Smith, Principal This year, my first as Principal of Belmont High School, has been very challenging for me. Because ofthe great increase in enrollment, the addi- tion of many new teachers, and the establishment of some new policies by the school system, there have been many changes in our school. The willingness of everyone-students, teachers, and general staff- to cooperate and work as a team for Belmont has brought us to the end of a difficult year strong and vigorous. We shall continue to produce students who are well prepared academ- ically, enriched culturally, coordinated physically, and matured psycho- logically. Belmont students will continue to contribute to Los Angeles some of its finest citizens. - Gjertrud H. W mm mwufus Kaz' fu Newcomers to the Belmont Island this past year were the Foreign Students. When they first arrived, they perhaps felt a bit strange to life here on the Island. This didnlt last for long, however, and now it's difficult to remember a time when we weren't fortunate enough to have them as citizens of our Island. This group has 7257 its own student council and their president, Hiroshi Shibata, and vice president, Martha Espinoza, represent the Foreign Students on the Student Council. Their presence has meant much to Belmont as they have con- tributed greatly in the fields of scholarship, athletics, and cultural understanding. Aloal: ouleou aileanex. ' Hemel! The Knights are sponsored by Mr. Condit and headed by Dennis Quan, while the Ladyes are co-sponsored by Mrs. Goin and Mrs. Peyton and have Mercedes Urbina as their president. These groups perform many services for the school and are perhaps best known for their Student Court activities, their efficient ushering during the Belmont assemblies, and their masterful manage- ment of the cafeteria traffic during the nutrition and noon hours. The members of the band, directed by Mr. Sheldon Mehr, obviously enjoy music more than sleep because they come to school many minutes earlier than they have to, just to make music. Such love of music must be infectious for the band has grown tremendously in size and quality during this lpast year. We at Belmont are proud of our fine ban whose performances at assemblies, football games and other school events make . all of these occasions memorable ones. The Madrigals, directed by Mrs. Lillian Sargent, would rather sing than eat, for they give up many of their nutrition periods for rehearsal time. This love for music is reflected in their very beings when they gather together to sing an old English ballad or an American folk song. The joy is contagious. We catch a certain amount of it as we sit in the audience and for this experience we owe much to the Madrigal Singers. They attest to the fact that the arts Hourish at Belmont. M9214 ROW 1: R. It doesn't take a great deal of in- sight to determine that this efhciency in the main is due to two things: the quality of the student training offered in these school offices, and the quality of the student that is attracted to take advantage of such training. ln a school as large as Belmont, it would be impossible to carry on the volume of work these offices handle without the use of student help. A similar thank you must also be accorded to the Library Helpers, The Book Room Helpers, and The Projection Crew. Congratulations to the students who man these offices. We here at Belmont have long known that we have the best scholars, teachers, coaches, athletes, and admin- istration to be found for miles around and by the end of this year most everyone else in the city will also realize this fact. The lists of scholarships granted to students in the school is impressive, and the list of Northern League titles in athletics is overwhelming. The team led by Co-Captains Adolpho Cruz and Robert Cobbs provided many moments of anxiety for the opposition and never quit fighting until the last ball had been rebounded, the last basket swished, and the final whistle blown. The leading scorers of the B's, who finished fourth in the Northern League, were Willie Sloan and Robert Cobbs. 75:4 7eam Acquiring a record of seven wins and three losses, the Belmont C Team finished in second place in the Northern League just behind the league leaders. The prospects for next season are even brighter, as all but two of the boys, Billy Garner and Hiroshi Noguni, who are seniors, will be returning and will form the nucleus of a strong B Team for next season. Individual B Team honors go to Gerald Dris- coll, who was high point man on the team, and Delmas Hicks who was the leading rebounder in the league. Ze? 7e4m The season of the Belmont D team was a much more successful one than the record of four wins and seven losses indicates, as three of the games were extremely close. The D's are the iron men of the school as their roster of six men provides for only one reserve. Among the members of the D team who were outstanding are Co-Captain Ronald Hines, who captured high point honors, and Co-Captain How- ard Sakamoto, who shared the most valuble player honors with Hines. The Tenth Grade Cross- country Team were the North- ern League Champs by virtue of going undefeated through seven league meets. Eduardo De Sevilla brought additional glory to Belmont by scoring individual first place honors in the Northern League meet held at U. C. L. A. The Varsity and junior Varsity Cross-country teams also fared well against tough Northern League competition and Carlos Reyes, number one man on the Varsity placed fourth in the all Northern League meet. The teams were coached by that veteran track mentor C. N. Mullard and captained by Ronnie Liles, who placed high in all the meets. 7567 um, not wade ta de weaned finial Zine e gdmaaz' mae emma Because of the need to meet a publica- tion deadline it is impossible to include the records of the track teams, but from the showings thus far made, it appears that the A's and the C's are well on the way to Northern League titles. The A's paced by such men as Frank Brown and Sydney Berrard in the broad jump, Robert Armstrong and Richard Domasin in the sprints, Russel Osborne in the mile, Henry Rivera in the hurdles, Kenny Hickman in the 440, and Louie Torres in the hurdles and pole vault, have an excellent chance of enjoying an- other undefeated season. While the B's may be somewhat lack- ing in depth, such outstanding men as Henry Aguirre in the pole vault, Carl Smith in the high jump, Sam Wong in the shot put, Richard Caldera in the hurdles and Mario DiGregorio in the Sprints insure that the B's will be strong contenders for league honors. Some of the outstanding men on the C team are Ted Katayama and Howard Sakamoto in the broad jump and sprints, Johnny Sepulveda in the pole vault, john Marte and Shig Miyake in the shot put, Rudy Aguero in the 660, john Nicholson and Robert Perez in the 1520, and Ramon Valenzuela in the 120 low hurdles. As the Campanile goes to press, the team is well ,on the way to garner- ing another Northern League Championship, having thus far won three matches and lost none. David Null is rated the top man on the team while Ken Honji gets the nod as being the most reliable. The most improved players are Benny Quan, Gary Fong, and John Hom. The most improved j.V. players are Quevado and Eddie Fong. Since the pic- tures were taken, Bob Reese has won a spot on varsity team. Co-Capt. Don Smith On this page and the pages that follow are some of Belmont's unsung heroes, the members of the A and B baseball teams. They practice long hours and do much to bring Belmont honor by establishing excellent contacts with other schools and communities as well as turning in consis- tently brilliant records in baseball competition, season after season. This group goes largely unsung perhaps, be- cause they have no true home field. The Arroyo Seco Playground attempts to fill this function, but its distant location makes it difiicult for a majority of Hilltoppers to reach. It's far too early in the season as this year book goes to press to make any predictions concerning the title prospects for the team, but if past per- formances can serve as any criteria then it's for sure that Belmont will be the team to defeat for top honors. So what say, let's take an extra dose of school spirit and find our way to the Arroyo Seco play- ground and give these boys our fullest support. In the meantime here are some pictures that may bring a measure of recognition to those who so richly deserve it.
