The Campanile staff takes pleasure in presenting here pleasant memories of the best years of our lives. Constantly progressing toward happier, more democratic campus life, Belmont has es- tablished a new student participation system this term. As acting body of the organization, the Student Council meets every day to discuss the problems of student body government. Many projects established by the group this term have functioned well. The inspiring assembly pledge lbits of which the artist has interwoven with wrought iron gates and those ever present, graceful gulls who commute each day from the seal, the Bel Hop, and the Campus Clean Up are a few of forward looking proiects inaugurated by this group. Thus our Alma Mater, founded on high principles, advances toward truer democracy for all the student body. 5' :!a:'-- -5 K4 vi' +1 :iw , an f 3 L E , x. . , ,r . my K Q A wk qv 'Rx 'mix Q 9 ,g Q4 xiiw H Q QW J, lag I , was ,, 32? a 5 ...,.,,...f,f.,,,.s,1. . , f , 'H' , we ' 'L i ',j'Zjf f. .:. fI2:f-E,ffi:f,f, -: I pre. - U 1 of t , Q ,Q J y '.'2 --VA Vf'- 1 ,..o if , f' asain' , gl ' Q M7315 Hifffi' 5 diff Q. :ww ff pg,-1Q1'142m?s2Xf5 gs Wim asf?-ifzifU332?2f3'g55gZf-52553Q34 I f ,fsga2if??2E:zx'l:1:Q -M ' mini ,f ,wm,.-.meg if zf jgiemm- ga Q XY' .L., ., Q29 . .,.A ..., .,.. , .,,A. , 21 4 P 4. Benshimol is a true disciple of Beauty. During the twenty years that he held the key position on the Hill, all who were privileged to work with him received inspira- tion from the way in which he carried out the duties before him. He had many inter- esting adventures while preaching the gospel of Beauty on the campus, as his life with us was one of constant striving for high ideals. Within the halls of Belmont Mr. Benshimol will never be forotten. The principles and traditions that he established will live on in ever widening circles of influenceg living- even as steps resounding through building, archway, and cloisterg living-even as floods of gratitude well up and linger in our heartsg living--even as we say thanks to the man forever Inspirational, ' . ,.,,NLWyiN' 1 x im -i . l 7.f 'i Q Rsgx X X sew Ki . om , 1 s SES K . t v.,, , s - as t- tw. ss x ,sPw,Q.: ' his K N to-. . ADMINISTRATIDN We are very fortunate to have at Belmont two vice-principals of such outstanding caliber as Dr. Florence Alison Mecredy, and john Addison. Dr. Mecredy combines years of experience and extensive scholastic preparation with a deep in- terest in Belmont. She has been efficient in her management of the many girls' activities on the campus. As beloved sponsor of the Girls' League, she is director of such annual affairs as the GL Bazaar, Dance, Cotton Day, and Play Day. Mr. Addison is never too busy to help a fellow out if and when he runs into difficulty. This friendly administrator is active in maintaining the best possible conditions for all on the campus. ln order to direct activities in a democratic man- ner, Mr. Addison strongly supports the student participation plan recently adopted on the Hill, Our deep thanks go to these wonderful people for their untiring efforts in our behalf from day to day. By james Pain Principal Raymond I. Casey's radiant smile and amiable disposition have found their way into the hearts of the faculty and students of Belmont High School. ln the short time that he has been with us, he has won the support of everyone on our campus. With sincere wishes for many happy years to come, the Campanile staff joins in greeting Mr. Casey. Before his appointment to the Hill, Mr. C. had served for many years in the LA City school system in various capacities. He has been principal of Wilson and Torrance High Schools. During the war he enlisted in the Sea Bees as a specialist in the Platoon As- sembly, Detachment 2, where he served for two and one-half-years. ln this time his detachment was engaged in action on Caledonia, New Guinea, the Admiralty lslands, the Solomon lslands, Guam, and Okinawa. Toppers salute their new leader and hope that he will have many happy years on the Hilltop with a chance to develop in our student body the high ideals of citizenship for which he stands. We wish to thank our administrators, lvlr. Casey, Dr. Mecredy, and Mr. Addison for their generous help and for smoothing out many a bothersome tangle. Thanks to our patient faculty for making possible our picture schedules and other routine work. The Campanile staff from both winter and summer l947 classes has worked many long, extra hours to bring this book to its successful completion and they merit a vote of thanks from both faculty and students. The Campanile illustra- tion class has given the touch of the artist to the book and its cover, and added to your enjoyment in your l947 Year Book-we hope-We remember gratefully the work done by the office practice class in typing all of our copy. The Alfred and Fabris Studios, as in many years past, has done a superb job in giving us beauty in photography. We fully appreciate the help of Mr. Pete Weintraub and Mr Robert Hagen of Mission E . ngravers and Mr. Stuart Webb of Cole-Holmquist, lnc., the printers, for advice and help, generously given. My personal thanks to the faculty assistants, lvliss Blakely, Mr. Harris and Mr. jones for cheerful cooperation. . . If Belmont enjoys its 1947 Campanile-that is our reward! GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION EVENTS The Girls' Athletic Association is for all girls interested in improving their skill in sports. Two points may be earned each semester either by taking a sports class during gym and an after school club which are: badminton, tennis, and swimming, or by taking swimming and badminton or swimming and tennis. lt takes six points to earn a Belmont B and if a girl works hard enough she may earn her letter by the end of the Bll term. The C. A. A. went to Poly for a Playday March 19, l947, and much to the disappointment ot everyone it rained. The girls combined teams and played volleyball sitting down inside the gym, Belmont C. A, A. had their Playday April Zl, l947, in which Huntington Park, Los Angeles High, and Verdugo Hills High were the guests. They played volleyball, tennis, base- ball, and basketball in which most of the Belmont teams won. If you were to take a survey of who were the most popular people on the campus. come Friday afternoon, the answer would probably be the coaches. And it is the coaches that deserve that popularity, for they lead a Belmont team to a win or a loss, usually a win. They are the brains behind the machine that rep- resents the Hill on the athletic fields. ln football and baseball, we look to Coach Felix Pen- nino, who although being here at Belmont the shortest time, has become one of the most popular faculty mem- bers in the school, He handles the varsity boys and they can testify that he knows his business, whether it be on the gridiron or the diamond. His record for the 1947 campaign will probably be far greater than '46 in foot- l:all as he will have considerably better material. ln track and football it's Coach Laddie Mullard, who bcyond the shadow of a doubt is the most competent track coach in the city school system. His record proves it. ln the past decade he has had five championship cinder crews. his greatest being the l94l team which came within three points of upsetting the favored lef- ferson Democrats. His greatest accomplishment was probably the development of Bill Smith, considered by most track authorities, as the greatest track star ever developed in the city schools. ln basketball there is the popular Coach Ray Harris, who just returned from war duty with the Navy in l946 and took up his old job as head casaba mentor. Lacking a consistent point maker, the coach who usually turns out top squads had to settle for a fourth place team, al- though the Sentinels then moved up to third when Poly was disqualified. He also handled the Bee team. Coach Richard Red Valentine, also a veteran, returned in the spring of l946 and helped Mr. Mullard in track, taking over the field events. He developed Belmont's best pole-vaulter since Baylor Maynard. He was Lon Tolliver who placed third in the city meet last year. In the fall he coached the Bee football team and had a very successful year. There's your Belmont coaching staff, of which every Hilltopper can be proud. SPCDRTS DEDICATION Our school year was one of joyous acclaim, except for one incident, a tragic one. That was the death of Howard Lindsey, W'48. Howard was killed in a freak accident at the beach while playing an impromptu game of football, the game he loved so much, While at Belmont, on the football team, he always gave his very best efforts for the Green and Black. lt is with this in mind that we of the Campanile Sports Staff dedicate this section to a great friend and fine citizen, Howard Lindsey. Felix Pennino and Laddie lvlullard wad duplicated their l945 record. For the second year they had won one, tied one, and lost three. ln the first fray, Lincoln, the Sentinels showed a good ine but no scoring punch as they fell to a l3-O defeat. Poly was the second opponent and first victim as All- City sprinter jasper Ross raced 6l yards for a touchdown. This, combined with HB. Neil Freeman's conversion, gave the Hillers the game 7-6. This season's tie game came at the expense of Wilson when Wataru Shimizu threw a Zl-yard pass to Ruben Sonzales in the end zone. Freeman again kicked the sonversion, and the game ended 7-7. Franklin, four years unbeaten, kept her record clean with a l9-O win over the Crown Hillers. ln this contest the line showed the stuff that made it one of the best in the Polar Loop. Marshall, the most looked-forward-to game of the season, was a good battle, as the Sentinels played hard and rough, but went down on the short end of a T2-6 score. Pete C-eranios, F.B., plunged over the Belmont's lone tally. Three players were placed on the All-Northern teams. Wayne Tsukahira made first string center, and Howard Lindsey and jasper Ross, tackle and halfback, respective- ly, made second squad. ,-9-nw-- ' N FOOTBALL MANAGERS: G. Pont, G. All I946 B football fans had plenty of grounds to be proud, as the Hill team won three and lost two under the guiding hand of Coach Red Valentine. Both losses lLincoln 8-6 and Poly 26-ZOJ were close and hard fought frays and were lost by only a few points. The wins, however, were not only decisive, but they broke some long standing jinxes. The Marshall B's had whipped the Sentinel squads four years straight up to the i9-46 contest when the home team came away with an I8-I2 victory. No one person could be named as being responsible for the win, but hard fighting by the line contributed greatly. Franklin's lightweights were also a jinx, as they had a three-year winning streak over the Hilltoppers. But with a beautiful display of passing, the Sentinels rolled to a Crushing 32-6 win. Q. B. Ernie Lauterio completed seven out of eigh passes in ZO minutes of play. This is a remarkable record Wilson gave little trouble as they fell for the thin straight year by the same score l2-O. The Poly game proved to be the most exciting am most disappointing fray of all as Belmont went down to a 26-20 defeat. ln the last quarter, four touchdown were scored, with the Parrots scoring the winning tallj in the last l7 seconds. A nice record was left by the '46 Midgets as they scored 88 points in league play and had 52 scored agains them. Lauterio passed for seven of the touchdowns, anc leading ground gainer for the season was Stanford ML with a 6.25 average. Top: H. lba, D. Vitamanti, A. Lane, B. Krikorian, H. Weyganclt. Bottom: 1. HIGH SCORER-Bill Shaw, the Bee's stellar center, was high point man for the year. BEE CAPTAIN-Eddie Lee, the only Senior Aye on the lightweight squad, was unanimously elected as honorary captain of the Bees by his fellow teammates. Eddie is a two-year letterman. VARSITY BASKETBALL A Belmont basketball squad that was far better than its record showed, closed a rather inglorious campaign with a record of five vic- tories as against five defeats. The Sentinels, under the capable leadership of Coach Ray Harris, started out like a ball of fire as they surprised a strong lvlarshallite quintet, 33-32 in an overtime period. The Barristers, who later went on to cop the Northern League bunting with Polytechnic lPoly was later disqualified because of using an illegal playerl, were spotted l3 points at the half time period. But after that, it was all the Sentinels' game as they played their best contest of the year. Al lFathal Hines sank the winning basket. Because of his fine floor work he was awarded a berth on the All-Northern second string. Wilson's Mules, who have consistently been a thorn in the side of the Hilltoppers, proved that this year was no exception to the rule as they stopped the Hill crew 29-20. The Mules repeated their victory during the second round with a score of 25-23 in overtime. Coach Harris' first stringers took a day off when the Sentinels won an easy decision from the Lincoln Tigers 32-l8. The Hilltoppers took the second Lincoln game in stride with a 32-22 victory. Although the Polytechnic Mechanics tied for the Polar Crown they had a pair of tough hurdles to leap before they got by the Senti- nels. ln the first fracas the Parrots won out over the Belmonters 24-l9, but some fine playing by Alf Colomo spelled the difference between victory and defeat for the Mechanics. Colomo rang up a total of l7 points. The second fray, which was held on the Poly floor, was evencloser than the first one as the Polyites took a 30-26 decision. Top player in the game was again Colomo, who scored I4 digits, with Bob Kelsey of Bel- mont close behind with lO points. Franklin's Panthers took a double dose of defeat at the hands of the Hilltoppers as they fell, in the first game ---, and in the second game 29-27. Some fine shooting was dis- played by Dick Ellsworth who came strong at the end of the season with improvement. That was your i946-47 varsity squad. They could have done a great deal better if they had had the school behind them at every game. CROSS COUNTRY TEAM: B. Wise, R. Campos, E. Williams, V. Perez, l. Wolfson. The main difficulty lay in Belmont's lack of depth strength. This means that not enough boys turned out for the team. An error, it is hoped, th. will not be repeated next year. The l947 squad was full of outstanding individual competitors such as: Elwood Williams H946 All-City 880 kingi, Bill Freeman, Ray Sasak Ross larrett, lim Wolfson, Albert Brewer, Don Lent, Forrest Davis, Morris Vendrell, George Hall, Kenny Harris, Fred Trebow, Stanford Mu, and Eddie Lei Of this group, seven are Senior Ayes, and three copped All-Northern honors. Williams was All-Northern half-miler for the second year runninj with a best time of Zm. l.4s. Sasaki jumped to top man in the broad jump with a jump of Zl feet 8V2 inches, and Freeman showed the way in tl' low hurdles. Williams, besides being named as honorary captain at the beginning of the year, led Sentinel scorers with 52-3X8 joints for the campaign. Belmont tracksters' best showing against stiff competition was in the Poly meet, held on April l8, when they upset the dope sheet and trounce the Parrots 60-44. Williams was a triple winner in the 220, 880, and broadjump, besides anchoring the winning relay team. Coach Clarence Ebers' Franklin Panthers, the league champions, rolled over the sentinels 68-lf3--35-ZX3 on May 2. The Franklinites then wer on to score 58 points in the All-League Meet to insure the loop gonfalon, Mr. Ebers was formerly a coach here at Belmont. Front Row: C. Hall, V. Perez, E. Lee, M. With brothers jay and Byron Winston grinding out a large piece of the score in each meet Coaches Laddie Mullard and Red Valentine enjoyed a good season as the S 47 Bee track team won four meets and lost one in Northern League competition. Only meet lost was to defending City champ Poly by a score of 55Vz 3992 Otherwise there wasn't a team in the league who could touch the local spikesters as proved by wins over Lincoln 7O 3l Marshall 55 40 Wilson 79 I6 and Franklin, 8l-l4. In the All Northern track meet Belmont placed second behind Poly Starring for the Hilltoppers were: jay Winston, first in the highs, second in the low hurdles and tie for second in the pole vault Byron Winston third in the high hurdles third in the low sticks, and tie for second in the pole vault Gene Hamilton third in the shot put and third in the broad jump and Harold Weygandt, first in the high jump. Belmonts victories can be contributed to such stars as the Winston brothers Gene Hamilton Willie jackson, Bill Yoshida, Harold Weygandt, urtis Thompson David de la Torre Rudy Campos David Ostrove Bob Rockey Don Monroe and Ben Wixon. CEE TRACK Belmonts Cee track team went through a not too impressive season winning one meet and losing four. However under the able handling of mentors Laddie Mullard and Richard Valentine the team did develop some outstanding men, among them being Herbert Chew first in All Northern shot put Frank Lauterio fifth in All Northern low hurdles, joe Shaginaw, fifth in l8O-yard dash, and Ben- Scores Belmont 32V2 Lincoln 43V2 Belmont 8Vz Poly 68Vz Belmont 43Vz Marshall 32V2g Belmont 37, Wilscn 40. VARSITY TENNIS ln a league that was reduced to four teams because of the lack of manpower the Belmont Sentinels ended their campaign with a record of one win and two losses The other schools were the Wilson Mules the Marshall Barristers, who copped the league bunting, and the Frank- lin Panthers Coach Al Robbins crew looked very sharp at the beginning of the year and they showed their tennis prowess to Wilson as they trounced the Franklin s racketmen avenged last years defeat at the hands of the Sentinels as they held the Belmonters, 5-2. The Northern League s perennial tennis favorites the Marshall Barristers showed the Sentinels that this wasn't an off year as they dropped the Here are the boys that made tennis possible at Belmont this year by turning out for active competition: David Lee, Mario Mancillas, Ronnie Carl- on Mickey Ruiz Robert Kort Salvador Ugarte Daniel Gomez Augustine Aguilar and Alfred Eaton. Bee team members were Perry Lew john Small Chong Fong Bob Buettner George Paul Ming Fong, Gene Chin, Carl Rodriquez, William Prieto, 'V i 5,5 X. The Belmont baseball team's motto for the l947 campaign was hustle, hustle, and more hustle, and it paid off, as the Sentinels closed their Northern League schedule with a record of 6 wins and two losses, and a share in the championship with Lincoln for the Polar Loop bunting. Led by the clutch hitting of Eddie Harper, the Sentinels just did manage to slip by the Wilson Mules, 2-l, in the last ol the seventh inning with two out. Harper laid down a bunt and was safe at first with Norm Buss and Ben jeffey scoring. Herb Hamilt pitched his best game of the year, giving up two hits and whiffing fifteen batters. Franklin walked to victory in the first round as they scored six runs, five unearned due to some walks given up by the aforementioned Hamilt. The final score was 6-3, with the Panthers only getting one hit. Belmont lost its second game to the Lincoln Tigers also on walks. Bob Lazzarini walked in the winning run in the last ol the seventh, with the final outcome, Lincoln, 23 Belmont, l. Marshall's Barristers, Belmont's arch-nemisis, felt the sting of Sentinel lumber, as the Belmonters lambasted the Lawyers 27-8. Leading the stick parade for the Sentinels were Ben leffey, who poled out a home run, triple, and two singles, Bob Laz- zarini and Eddie Harper each with three hits in five trips to the plate. All around team brilliance led the Sentinels through an undefeated second round. Wilson fell easily, 4-l, behind the superl: pitching of Lazzarini, and the batting of Neil Freeman. Herb Hamilt started the Franklin fracas, but he showed a bit of wildness in the second inning giving up a run, and Coacl' Pennino put Lazzarini on the firing line again, and once more he came through with flying colors, blanking the Panthers without a hit or a run in his 5 213 innings stint. Final score was Belmont, 5, Franklin, l. Again Lazzarini showed his wide assortment of pitches, but this time to the Lincoln crew, who up to the Belmont game had led the league . Lazzarini left the diamond on the afternoon of May 20 with a 7-l victory in his hip pocket. Great clutch hitting by Don Campbell, Freeman, jeffey, and Harper, accentuated the Sentinel victory. Humorous highlight of the game was when Frank Salm stole second base. Salm has been noted for his speed l?l. Bob Rockey also was a standoul behind the bat. Lazzarini again relieved Hamilt, also Ronnie Carlson, in the second Marshall game, as the Sentinels had a tough time sub- duing the Barristers ll-7. Harper's 4-4 and jeffey's 3-3 featured the Hilltoppers' win. Harper, who took time out from his duties as student body prexy to play baseball, led the team in batting with a fat .532 average. 3 i l 1 BASEBALL INFORMAL - l.
