From kin- dergarten to your senior year and beyond teachers have and will use their energy and knowledge to help you reach a goal, that goal is the capacity for self education; not to be depen- dent upon, but independent of your teachers. The realization of this goal is rested both in the wisdom of your teachers past and future; and in your effort and willing participation in the edu- cational process. I hope at no time have you or will you fail to take advantage of this op- portunity. It will be complimentary to both you and your teachers if you meet the challenges of your future using the knowledge, courage, and integrity matured during your school years. Best Wishes To The Class of 1988 Kenneth Fitzpatrick Class Advisor Our High School days are now a fond memory. As we look back at our four years at Belmont High School, we should all be proud that we have worked hard, have accomplished quite a lot, and have certainly come a long way. Our accumulation of scienti- fic knowledge has helped us in our daily lives and will be use- ful in the future. We were made aware of social problems that face our country and the world, and I believe we have been stimulated enough to engage in solving these problems in the future. We have enjoyed such activities ' as the senior class play, which was very popular and hilarious; the prom, which was overcrowded but successful beyond our expectations; the ski trips, which almost ruined our reputation; and the senior Halloween Dance, which was colorful, creative, and a lot of fun. Our athletic teams have been outstanding every year. Through the years, almost all of our fall, winter, and spring teams have qualified for state competitions. We have also donated monies to various charities, and we have worked hard on school improve- ment projects. Now, we are ready to embark on a new adventure in life. We will all go our sep- arate ways, but I am confident, we will all cherish the memories from our esteemed Belmont High. My grandfather used to tell me; with drive, hard work, and dedication a man will certainly achieve success. ... if we stick to this prescription, maybe, we will all be leaders of our generation. I would like to thank the teachers and the administration for all the opportunities that they have provided for us. I thank you, the Class of 1 988, for the memories and I wish you best of luck and happiness in all your future endeavors. Ara Balikian President of Class of 1988 16 Megan Ackley 36 Jackson Rd. This was the year history was made. We are used to apologizing for our record, explaining that our team was rebuilding”, or that we were just adjusting to a new coach, or that the sport is very difficult and complicated, or that the other teams start playing in the seventh grade. All these are true; however, the 1 987 field hockey team has absolutely nothing to be sorry for. Posting the first winning record of 1 0-3-5, and qualifying for the state tournament for the first time in Belmont history, we showed that teamwork and desire overcome all obstacles. Under the second year of Ms. Barbara Hawkes ' coaching, the team made it through some harsh double-sessions and Sunday practices, helping us to upset the Middlesex League and prove to everyone that there ' s no stopping us. Right Watertown? Watertown certainly got a taste of it. We handed them (Middlesex League Champs and defending State Champs) their only two losses of the season. We showed the league that Belmont was the team to beat; only lucky Wakefield and Lexington were able to accomplish that feat. How did we do it? With twelve dominating seniors, five awesome juniors, and three hardworking sophomores, Lisa ' s long legs, jenni ' s drive. Lex ' s goals (nice hat trick), Mary ' s mind (???), Pee Wee ' s size (good things come in small packages), Gina ' s smooth moves, Laura ' s attitude, and don ' t forget Beth ' s sick humor. Things to remember: States ' 87, swamp hockey, Gatorade (or water?), UNH — Food?, Pep rally, the gut with the stick shift ( ' 86), Stripe, Sprints, What ' s that fragrance you ' re wearing? . . . Ben Gay. To the birds: Thanks for decorating our field!! When are we getting our boxers? So, we would just like to thank our dedicated fans, mothers, fathers, friends, C.P. and W.M., and the rest for your support. And, to the team: Thanks for our best season yet and we wish the best of luck to next year ' s squad. The State Championship is waiting for you! Don ' t forget: Our team has spirit, our team has class We know this year we really kicked some ... 82 We ' ll miss you, Mary, Gina, and Beth iu ' iilfiif. fAiiif . miiily Wjifitm 83 BOYS SOCCER Top Row Micheal Burgess, Brad jones, Mike Gallant, Neil Martin, Chris jaroch (capt), Dennis Coyle (capt), Brian Walsh (capt), Mark Houllahan, Mike Geggies, Coach )im Mahoney Middle Row Ara Balikian, Brad Cutting, Peter Georgantes, )im Brown, Hansi Kalkofen, John Looney, |ohn Hill, Tim Johnson Front Row Mike Gaffney, Paul Mclver, David Pomer, Neil Maclean, Jeff Riley, Richie Shea Mem-States, WAR in Win. 4 OT, Masco. 3-0, Austen Prep 3-2, Pep Rally Jam, 24 Angus ' , Highway to Hell, Angus jams, soul searches, Coors, cops, hit it, Chateau, Lex. The golf team had its second consecutive state-tournament qualifying year under Coach Mel Wenner. Under the leadership of senior Co- Captains )ay Monahan and Will Sheridan the team completed a 6-3 re- cord in the strong Middlesex League. Monahan was not only a leader of the team and the team ' s top player, but was the league MVP. The highlight of his season was a one under par score of 35 at the team ' s home course, Belmont Country Club. Seniors Sheridan and Steven Pugliese had their best years as Maurauders and will be looked on to perform well in the State Tournament. The team also got strong performances out of a group of juniors, led by next year ' s Captains, jimmy Bruce and Mark Lewis. Key victories included the rival Watertown, and a convincing 10 ' 2-1’ 2 win at Reading. The Reading win was a must win versus a team that was ahead of Belmont in the standings before the match started. The team would like to thank Mel Wenner for two years of leading the team to the State Tournament after an absence of many years. In post season competition, Sue Ballotti, Amy Hanson, Shannon Sullivan, Evonne Lechtenberg, Kelly Noonan, Maria Hegarty, Hanna Bruno, Mia Erdberg, and Melanie all qualified for States. Everyone competed outstandingly, and the Mile Relay team qualified for the All State Meet. At the State Relays the Shuttle Relay placed third and the Two Mile Relay, Shuttle Hurdles, Distance Medly Relay, and Quarter Mile Relay all placed well. The team was predicted to be very weak after the loss of last year ' s Seniors. But league All Stars Chris Connoly (600), Paul Witham (300), Caleb Perkins (2-mile) and Tri-Capt Jamie Fitzpatrick (hurdles, high jump) became the big point scorers. High jumpers David Anjouria and Steve Allardi also scored often for the team. Hurdler Chris Stone, among others, had a key 2nd place against Burlingten. Tim Johnson, the 1 sprinter, always made his pres- ence felt. Seniors Paul Mclver(300)and Mike Burgess (600, relay alternate) were important members of this year ' s team. Belmont kept tradition alive by somehow assembling yet another great mile relay team. This year ' s team consisted of Tri-Capts. Paul Witham, Jamie Fitzpatrick, Chris Connally and Junior Hanse Kalkoten. They shocked the state by winning the gold at the State Coaches meet in January. They look forward to an outstanding outdoor season. Under the leadership of Captain Pat- rick Viglirolo, Eric Rogers and Mike D ' Andrea the team achieved many key victories. Many wrestlers compiled impressive indi- vidual records and continued the success into the post seasons. Among these team members who completed the season with admirable records were Nadim Baghdady, Eric Rogers, Pat Vigirolo, Mike and Anthony D ' Andrea.
