Belmont High School Belmont, Massachusetts 1987 Seniors Faculty . MWPy l i 15 65 junior Senior Prom May 1986 Boston Park Plaza Hotel To The Class Of 1 987: We look forward to the future, let us not forget the past. Our four years at Belmont High have come and gone so quickly. We have grown academically, athletically and socially. The outrageous Oktoberfests , the ski trip of ' 86, our Halloween dance, Arsenic Old Lace, our many parties and our proms are only a few of the memories that I ' ll always treasure. No one knows what the future holds, but we are prepared and are ready to move on, open new doors and accept new challenges. You have all contributed in your own way to the success of our class. We are special — we are the Class of ' 87! Our friendships will never fade and our memories will remain with us forever. I wish all of you the very best of luck in the future. Thanks for the memories! Kara R. Cl ass Advisor Mr. Kenneth Fitzpatrick The growth of an educated person takes time and is never truly completed. From kindergarten to your senior year and beyond teachers have and will use their energy and knowledge to help you reach a goal, that goal is the capacity for self education; not to be dependant upon, but independant of your teachers. The realization of this goal is rested both in the wisdom of your teachers past and future; and in your effort and willing participation in the educational process. I hope at no time have you or will you fail to take advatage of this opportunity. It will be complimentary to both you and yourteachers ifyou meetthechallenges of your future using the knowledge, courage, and integrity matured during your schools years. Last spring when newly appointed head coach John Papas called histirst team meeting, they had many ideas that he and his staff made reality. Coach Papas was at many team practices in the spring while trying to get to know his players and hopefull players. The town sponsored flag football and weight lifting that was run by the football coaches. These did not only help to get us in shape but it formed bounds of friendship between the players and the coaches. The meaning of PRIDE was brought to the football team as we became close all season. From the bus ride to our summer session until our last game on Thanksgiving the team always stayed together and gave its best. Knowing that the team tried as best as it could was a good feeling and nobody tried us as hard as our captians: Shawn Locke and Teddy Trodden. They along with other seniorsfjeff Bruno, John Byrnes, Steve Dalakalis, Mike lackson, Jeff Meskell, John Meskell, Rich O ' Connell, Peter Reagan and Chris Wright) help the coaches to initiate their programs and were always supportive of the coaches ideas. The seniors were the backbone that held the team together. Many will look at our record and say we had a bad year, all of us that were there from the hottest day at Otis AFB, to the day we shoveled off our practice field know our season was a success. We know what it takes to be a Marauder under Coach Papas. We were led by example by our captains and seniors, but the man we all looked up to was John Papas. The team would like to thank the Coaches. Many thanks to our parents who always put up with us and were always there to support us. Without them we would not have made it. Under the direction of first time Coach Barb Hawkes the girls where able to reach their goals of three wins, while also achieving two ties. Through the hard work at summer training camp, pre-season workouts, and daily practice, the team developed new techniques and began to build a strong team for the seasons to come. The captains would like to thank Coach Hawkes and the team for a successful season. Boys Varsity Soccer The 1 986 season was a great achievement tor the Boys Varsity Soccer team and one that will not be forgotten. With a record of 1 2-2-4, it qualified for the State Tournament and finished second place in the Middlesex League. The boys played hard and tough throughout the season, striving for a vic- tory in every game. The highlight of the season was a 1 3 game streak without a loss which included wins over both Lexington and Winchester. A second win with Winchester would have secured the League title, but unfortunately the team had to settle for a 1-1 and also second place. Tri-Captians Alex Blumsack, Robert Courtney and Mike Walsh provided great leadership and encouraged their teammates to give a 1 05%. Coach Jim Mahoney led the boys through a fine season and a berth in the State competition. Although the team was eliminated in the first round, it still had a season to be proud of and a record that speaks for itselt. The Boys Varsity Soccer team would like to thank Coach Mahoney for his devotion in helping the team achieve its goal of a winning season. Coach Jim Veiking, Chris Sacca, Scott Litner, Rob Damiano, Neal Madiean, Peter Reagan, Bobby Pomer, Dennis Coyle, Chris Caulfield, Bob Riley, Patrick Kelleher, Jody White, John Abate, Paul Santosuasso, Head Coach Dante Muzzioli The 1 986-87 Marauder hockey team had some trouble with repeating their miraculous Boston Garden experience of the year before. Although possessing many talented players on the team, the Marauder six missed the state tournament by one point. The expectations of this strong team were lost in the first half of the season when they entered a slump. The road back to the top was an uphill battle, and the Belmont High pucksters came up short. The Marauders graduate six seniors, Paul Green, Bob Pomer, Peter Reagan and tri-captians Robert Courtney, Teddy Trodden and Chris Wright. These seniors leave behind a very talented group of underclassmen in the capable hands of Coach Dante Muzzioli. The seniors would like to wish next years team good luck in their campaign for the state title. i P HW) Boys Basketball With the loss of last year ' s Middlesex league ' s top scorer, Steven Pollard, this year ' s team was picked seventh in the coaches poll earlier this season. To much of the league ' s surprise, the Marauders upset the first ranked Reading team during the 2nd game of the season, giving Belmont one of the top rankings in the league. The Marauders continued their winning ways throughout the season, defeating almost 60% of their opponents, which included the very memorable victory over the then undefeated Wakefield squad. A strong starting line-up, along with a solid bench, gave the Marauders the talent and depth needed to enter and create a great impact in the State tourney. Coach The Wrestling team finished off their 1 986-87 season impressivly. After graduating seniors from over half of their weight classes last year, the team was expected to spend this season rebuilding and replenishing its squad. Instead, they wrestled aggressivly all season even though some weights were filled by first year members. This aggressivness lead to the winning of some key matches and also placing high in the Belmont Tournment. The team was lead by co-captian Rich Maxwell and Michael DiBona who both ended their four years of wrestling at B.H.S with impressive varsity records. Other team members who ended their season with winning records are: luniors Pat Viglirolo, Nadim Baghdady and Eric Rogers, and Sophmore Anthony D ' Andrea. The team would like to thank Coach Paul Murphy and Assistant Coach Kevin Russo without whose guidance this season would not have been possible. JT Boys Swim Team 1st ro I to r: Sean Becker, Neil Murphy, Rob Plunkett, Chip Barsam, Chris Hamilton 2nd row I to r: Jason Kennedy, Mike Callahan, John Yoke Marius, John McCann, j Andy Canavan, Pedro Guitierez This year ' s boy ' s swim team posted a dual meet record of 7-3. The highlight of the season was an impressive victory over league nemesis, Lexington. The success of the team was due to the outstanding swimming of Rob Plunkett, ]ohn McCann, Jon Sampson, Sean Becker, Chris Hamilton, Neil Murphy and MikeCallanan and also the depth created by Brad Cohen, Chip Barsam, Aram Aslanian, John Yoke Marrios, Pedro Guitterez, Breen Mahoney and Greg Bond. Another major factor contributing to this years success was the consistently superb diving of Mark Divito and Jason Kennedy. Going into sectionals and states the team hopes to better the feats of last year, both individually and as a team. Thanks Mike and Reid 130 Gymnastics Team 1st row I to r: Soma Emerson, Michelle Donahue, Heather Shapazian(Co-Capt.), Michelle DastollitCo-Capt.), Corrine Swanson, Alicia Tomasian 2nd row: Laura Reagan, Kristin Bach, )enni Lavin, Dorene Delveq, Tara Finney, Kim ShapazianIMangr.) 3rd row: Coach Ralph Divito, Kristen Morgan, Theresa Cartwright, Suzanne Grande, Heather Sliney, Sharon Winston, Kristen Mixter In 1 986-87 the gymnastics team had a successful winning season. The season started with a new encouraging coach, Ralph Divito. Ralph brought out the best of the teams abilities and helped each of us work to our potentials. The team ' s scores increased a great deal with each meet starting off with an overall score of 88.00 and boosting to a well earned 99.45. The seniors of the team would like to thank our Coach for the great season and wish the team good luck next year. 132 Girls Indoor Track 1 st. row I to r: Heather Harrington, Casey Quirk, Devi Guertze, Kara Caputo, Margaret Hegarty, Elisa Digundji, Amanda Pratt, Shannon Connoly, Maria Hegarty 2nd row: Mel Werner(Coach), Sue Balloti, Lisa Rizzo, Rachel lackson, Jessica Pisano, Amy Rappaport 3rd row: Molly Brodigan, Maura Connolly, Andrea Digivanni, Hannah Green, Mary Sheriden, Lisa Bazerain, Isabel Guitterez, Linda Martin, Evonne Lechtenburg The Girls Track Team, despite being plagued by injuries throughout the season, still managed to win a meet and qualify for state coachs ' , state relays and All-State. Coached individually by Mel Wenner and lead by captains Margaret Hegerty and Kara Caputo, the team came close to beating many teams, with increasing scores in every meet. Many qualified for the All-State meet including Margaret Hegerty and Ingrid Dabringer in the 45 hurdles, Lisa Rizzo and Hanna Bruno in the 45 yrd dash, Sue Balloti in the 300, Elisa Dugundji and Kara Caputo in the 600, Devi Goetze in the 1 000, Amy Hanson in the 2 mile, and sophomore Rachael Jackson in the shotput. Boys Indoor Track 1 st. row I to r: Owen Hawkins, Alex Sherwin, Reggie Perry, Doug Martin, )im Blackburn(Coach) 2nd row: Bill Brotchie(Coach), Mike Burges, Walter Kruger, Matt LaFontaine, Sean Covel, Paul Mclver, Ben Mensah, Chris Connolly, lamie Fitzpatrick 3rd row; Paul Witham, Peter Haugh, Frank Browne, Chris Stone With the departure of perenial state champions Mike Brown and Bill Covel the outlook of this years Marauder track team was rather glum. But behind the strong running of Ben Mensah, Chris Connolly, Paul Witham, Shawn Covel, Doug Martin and Captains Alex Sherwin and Reggie Perry the team equaled last year ' s record of 5-4 and turned alot of heads along the way. The mile relay team of all-star dash man and school record-holder Mensah, 1 000 yarderConnoly, all-star 600 yard man Sherwin, and all-star 300 yarder Perry shocked its rivals by winning the All-State coaches meet, a feat not even accomplished last year by Brown and Co. In the dual meets the team was strengthened on the track by Jamie Fitzpatrick and Chris Stone in hurdles, Paul McGiver in the dash, and Mike Burgess and Owen Hawkins in the 600 and the 1 ,000. Sophmore phenomenon Peter Haugh, and senior Frank Browne picked up points in the mile and Perry and Senior Matt LaFontaine led the high jumping. Sophomore strength men Walter Kruger and Ben Krikorain finished 3rd and 4th respectively in their age group for the state in the shot put. Head Coach Jim Blackburn and assistant Bill Brochie were instrumental to the teams success and motivation.
