Never before has Belmont High seen such a diverse yet unified class. A class where all could attend a function and be satisfied that they were members of a distinct group — the Class of 1985. We did a lot in our years at Belmont High, and I find it only appropriate to recall some of the good times. Our Senior Halloween Party brought out creatures of the likes which we had never seen. We were visited by the Crest Team, the Rat Patrol, Billy Idol, ZZ Top, Clark Kent alias Superman, Maxwell Klinger, the Baseball Furies, Indians, Pirates, former Presidents . . . and Randy Sabatino? Our Senior Class Play, “Get Smart”, got rave reviews as Jeff Rosenthal and the cast were asked to perform on Broad- way (though the offer was turned down due to a salary dispute). Who could forget L.N.’s post-party (did anyone leave?) Local Haunts included Flippa’s B G, Tony’s, Hav’s, Ter- ry’s, Rosie’s, and Winnie’s cellar, not to mention a few unnamed vacant lots. Our ski weekends were . . . well . . . unique, as we blended just the right amount of skiing with a little bit of “fun”. The proms, semi-formals, dances, raffles, trips, and car washes were also successful and full of good times. But these events would not have been possible if it weren’t for every member of the class. So now as I walk for a last time down our senior corridor, my mind wanders to times past, yet not forgotten. I know the memories will never fade, but stay with me. As we go our seperate ways, I wish all of you the best of luck, and hope that you will always keep the memories of your years at Belmont High close to your heart. Thank you and Best Wishes. Jim Murphy CLASS ADVISOR CLASS OF 1985, “If you follow a path that interests you, not to the exclusion of love, sensitivity, and cooperation with others, but with the strength of conviction that you can move others by your own efforts, and do not make success or failure the criteria by which you live, the chances are you’ll be a person worthy of your own respect.” N. Simon Thanks for the memories of the past few years! Special thanks to Jim Murphy, Chris Sullivan, Liz Serino, Dave Hurley, and Tom Kenney. Good Luck! Love Anne Mullany P.S. Throughout the fall the club served our community by helping the PTA, sponsoring our fall Blood Mobile and giving a Halloween Party at the Fernald School. This year three new activities were incorporated in our schedule. Belmont celebrated its 125th birthday on October 13, 1984. Our club helped thejubilee Committee organize the parade and dance. The elderly of Belmont are also new on our list for services. Since America has opened its eyes to the problems in Ethiopia, the Belmontian Club ran an Oxfam Day within Belmont High. We raised over SI 500 which was sent in WBZ’s plane, The Spirit of America, to Ethiopia. This year has been busy but fun for us. The officers would like to thank all the members for their interest and participation and “gook luck” to next year’s officers. Somewhat deterred by nagging injuries all year 1 they posted a 4-5-1 record, equalling the 1983 squad. They could very well have been a 7-3 team. Losing to powerhouse team such as Winchester and the eventual Super Bowl participant, Lexington, they saved their best for last. Led by senior tri-captain Robert Walker, Jamie Maclsaac and Randy Sabatino, the Marauders won their last three games. The season culminated in i stunning 2 1-14 Thanksgiving Day victory over their arch-rival Watertown, a team that had a 6-3 season record. This feat had no } been accomplished since 1979. To continue this winning tradition, the Marauders are leaving behind a strong nucleus for nex year. Coach Aprille summed up the year nicely by saying, “Although their record didn’t indicate it, I always knew these kids wer winners.” Well said, Tommy! Jenny Fairbanks, Laura Doan, Nina Arpante, Leslie Fay, Naomi Rubin, Margaret Hegarty, Jean-Marie Skahan, Tory Stone, Christina Anastos, Coach Linda Flynn Field Hockey is a very complicated sport. It takes a lot of skill, concentration, devotion and practice, practice, practice. There are many rules to learn which make the game even harder. The game is not an easy one, it is competitive, and it runs at a rapid pace and takes much concentration. The team itself has a disadvantage to almost all of the other sports in the high school, this is that the others have programs for their sports for youngs- ters to play and learn (ex: BAYS) but the field hockey team does not, they start from scratch at the high school level while others in other sports started at the age of about six or seven. Our record doesn’t show how much potential the team has or all the time and effort put in each day. We worked very hard throughout the season and I i wish it could have shown in our record, but it is hard to adjust each year with always having a new coach when you adjust to the old one. Our team had its j best season last year. We had a 500 season and it finally showed the talent and j the skill that the team had. We lost a lot of players from last year to this year except for 2 returning varsity players w ' ho were: Mary Lynn Cunningham and Susan Houllahan. It’s hard to start of the team with only 2 returning players but we managed 1 and formed a new ' team for years to come. Hopefully next year and the one after that will be a very productive and successful one. The girls Field Hockey team had a tough time this year with adjusting to two new coaches and a whole new team, but they managed to pull everything together and become one unified team. There was a lot of time and effort put in by the team, but especially by Mary Lynn Cunningham, Susan Houllahan, and Jen Fairbanks. 132 Boys Soccer 13-3-4 m r jr - I M ' ' By 1 • J - jm i w 1 X ' j 1 C IF 4 m ■ • J ' il yv ' ' v Manager; Jamie Morrison, Ted Bakon, Shahin Keramati, Pat McAuliffe, John Mangano, Charlie Gaffney, Ross Vona, Mike Winn, Bob Hill, Erik Griswold, Rob McLaughlin. This past season was a memorable on for the Boy’s Soccer Team. In preseason they were picked to finish fifth in the Middlesex League, but because of great coaching and team efforts, they ended up 13-3-4, one game out of first place. During the season they experienced many great moments that they will never forget. Amoung these was an away victory against arch-rival, Lexington, (1-0 win), for many the greatest victory of their careers. Also this team qualified for post season play for the third straight year, compiling a 1-1 record. Their final game, (a 1-0 loss to Middlesex rival, Wakefield), was agame they could have won, but even in defeat they showed the talent, spirit and class that made their season successful. It is great to be able to look back on the season and see that it was successful and most of all it was a lot of fun. Coach Mahoney made sure of that. 134 135 Girls Soccer 17-4-1 Melissa Hart, Maura Gaffney, Meegan Sheehan, Kristen Nahejian, Liz Dobies, Lori Gilman, Justine Kavanaugh, Kathy Pomer, Sheila Lyons, Kathy King, Susan Monkewitz, Tricia Murphy, Diane Monkewitz, Kathy Meskell, Julie Giggie, Dorothea Coehlo, Stephanie Cutting, Kristen McCarthy, Jenny Howick, Tricia Lyons The Girls Soccer team of 1984 has accomplished that high point which is pursued by girls soccer team in the state. They hold the coveted title of Massachusetts State Champions. The girls aimed for this goal from the beginning of the season, though it was a far away dream, and if it were not for the hard work, dedication and team play, they would have never attained it. The agility and skill of the team was superb but the real success was their togetherness, they played as one ... as a team. And so it is, the girls soccer team’s success will be remembered by many and certainly not forgotten by members. This story is a memory. One for a certain team. The Girls, led by co-captains Julie Monahan and Janet Pomer, took the Middlesex League title for the second straight season by winning the League Championship Meet with a margin of more than 150 points. The climax of the season was at the state meet where the girls took first place in two relays and placed second overall — the best the girl’s swimteam has ever done. Season highlights included victories over Stoneham, Reading, Lexington and Wakefield. In addition, the team’s top gymnasts performed well in the league meet, and two gymnasts, Denise and Andrea went on to State competition.
