ACTIVFIX E s ■I As I walk down the empty corridors of our Senior Hall for the last time, I can not help but to become a bit nostalgic. My thoughts cruise back through all the things we have done together. And as our final moments at BHS fleetingly pass, I feel it is only fitting that I make a quick reference or two to some of these times we have spent together. How about the Paragon Park Trip, 1 982 ... I hope you all made it back to Belmont safely. Then again, how would I know! Of course there was our Donkey Basketball Game, 1 983, in which people and animals alike made asses of themselves — typical. (However, we did have a great sanitation crew . . . right BB, TC, DL?) The 1 983 Prom at the Boston Park Plaza was “Truly” the best one BHS has ever had. Although we probably should have hired that crew of girls in our class (Cha, CG, AP, PM, KM) to be our band and entertainment! And who can forget our three SkiWknds . . . Remember 1 983? It was a beautiful sunny afternoon that we set out on our 2 PM departure . . . or was it 8PM? There was talk of camping out at the flagpole that year, but we made it! I forgot to thank whoever pulled the 3AM fire alarm when asked to by the Ramada Inn and Concord Police Dept. Well, in 1984 we were world travellers, (oh, no!). I believe we left our mark on Canada, que voulez-vous? I don ' t know whether to mention some of our dances, raffles, “sales”, or wet T-shirt contests, (Oh, I mean car washes!), but let ' s be grateful for our Fifties Day, rescheduled on about fifty different days. And we can be proud of the Winter Carnival and Semi-Formal which we now leave in the hands of future BHSers. AJ, Pomer and Falv will remember 1 983 . . . the case of the borrowed U-Haul and run away trees, right? 2 Finally, Senior Year. The Halloween Party — wild and unforgettable! And it was a perfect example of how diversified, yet unified our class was, in and out of costume. We had the Czech Brothers, the Indian tribe, the Jester, Gilligan ' s Island Crew, Stevie,” the Bud Man with Diet Pepsi, the pack of Marlboros, the tourists, the Furies, and the everpresent GTK club. And then there was The Good Doctor. If there was ever a doubt, this production proved what an incredible and talented class we were. And so the entire Class of ' 84 will always be remembered as the class that played doctor together . . . What a way to go! Well, it looks like we made it! And how can I ever sum up our four special years together at BHS? There have been fun and parties, work and worries. But above all we will remember people and activities. Moments crowded with friends, moments isolated and alone. Hold tight to the memories. Of course we can ' t recapture them, but we ' ll never forget those times together. Through the years, through all the good and bad, we ' ve loved the life we ' ve had, we ' ve learned what life ' s about . . . Through the Years. So, as you head out into the big vacation called life, just think of BHS as your cruise director, and then Sail On because Good Times Never Felt So Good! — Class of 1984 — Thank you, Congratulations, and Good Luck. — Richard Cooperstein Class Advisor Class of ' 84 Outward Bound, the words used by sailors for that moment when the anchor is weighed and the vessel is committed to the risks and challenges of the open sea. Without commitment and action the crew would remain untested in the safety and familiarity of their own harbor. Without a sense of adventure the world would remain undiscovered. Sailing through the season ' s first games against Needham, Wakefield and Winchester undefeated, the players seemed to surprise everyone in town as they headlined the Globe for four straight weeks. But soon, despite much pre-season and weekend practice, injuries claimed several key players including Tim Connors and George Lampl, who earlier punted the ball a record 61 yards against Burlington. With its determination to put forth 1 00% effort in defeat as well as in victory, the team ended its season with an incredibly strong showing against Watertown. In the continuing tradition of Belmont soccer, the team earned a berth in the state tournament for the second straight year. The team, ranked eighth going in, bowed in the first round to Cambridge Rindge and Latin, 2-0, despite the strong Marauder defense of goalie Paul LaFontaine and fullbacks Tom Dorsey, Andy Paulsen, and Rae Buck. Tri-captain Tom Dorsey claimed the title of Middlesex League MVP prior to being named a Globe All-Scholastic. Tri-captain Vekan Anserlian, along with Rich Gallant, Andy McAuley, and Andy Paulsen, was named a First Team League All-Star, while JeffTinkham and tri-captain Rich Cooperstein received All-Starteam honorable mentions. Despite missing out on post-season play, the girls demonstrated the benefits of team spirit and dedication with their amazing third place Middlesex League finish while having only three seniors on the team. Plagued by injuries, the girls continued to play aggressively with the help of several less experienced players who will certainly be assets to next year ' s team. Captain Bill Curtin, along with David Salinas, was named a League All-Star after finishing second at the state tournament. Bill ' s consistently strong performances also brought him the distinction of being named Middlesex League MVP. With the help of John Higgins, juniors Mike Murphy, John Deignan, and Dan Higgins, plus freshman James Whouley and Robert Deignan, the golfers qualified for the spring state tournament as a team following a thrilling victory over Watertown. With the help of coach Laura Hoffman and tri-captains Donna D ' Andrea, Barbara Donahue, and Chris Polcari, the girls found the determination and desire to improve their skills after hours of practice. Led by co-captains Jenny Honig and Ellen Gallant, the team provided strong showings against the likes of Reading, Wakefield, and Winchester after long practices provided by coach Tony Guarente. But, the runners wonder, what made the season especially memorable? It must have been a combination of the six mile Wilson Farm runs, the meets in Franklin Park ' s mud and rain, and the dozens of sprints up Goden Street! And how about the other half of the cross country team? Well, despite a disappointing 0-9 season, the boys showed a flicker of future greatness in the form of many exceptional underclassmen. Sophomores Bill Covel, Bobby Barrette, John Aguilar, and Erik Goetze established themselves as strong opponents against runners several years older. Co-captain Karl Goetze dominated most races as he set a new Belmont course record and became a Middlesex League All-Star. However, under the strict training of Coach Keith Durham the wrestlers finished the Belmont Tournament in fourth place. At the Central Sectional Tournament the wrestlers displayed even more talent as they finished fifth out of fifteen teams even though they lacked a 100 pound or heavyweight entry. Outstanding individual performances came from tri-captains Brian Folan with a second place finish, Andy MacAulay in fourth, and junior Frank Inglese in fourth. With a victory over Burlington, the Marauders earned a berth in the state tournament while continuing their winning ways for two more games to achieve a high seed in the opening rounds. Chris Messer, sophomore Steve Pollard, and Captain Tom Dorsey, who holds the BHS record for steals at 59, were named to play in the League All-Star game. In two of the season ' s most exciting match-ups Belmont lost to defending League champ Wakefield by only one basket and beat Burlington by a single point in overtime after Dorsey tied the score in the final seconds of regulation play. The team dedicates its season to injured captain George Lampl. School records were smashed at opposite ends of the fieldhouse by League All-Star Ellen Gallant in the hurdles prior to finishing third at states and by junior Maura Sullivan in the high jump. Captain Jenny Honig brought in much needed points in the two mile while at the state relays the shuttle hurdle team of Liz Deeley, Vanessa Chin, Gallant, and freshman Ingrid Dabringer sprinted past a surprised Reading team to grab first place. Captains Andy Paulsen in the thousand and mile and Paul LaFontaine in the hurdles teamed with Michael Barrette and Mike Brown to form a mile relay that finished second at the League meet and third at states. Paulsen and LaFontaine, both League All-Stars, finished first in their respective events at the League meet while LaFontaine was also named Middlesex League MVP. Both runners made strong showings at the state meet where Paulsen won the 1 000 and LaFontaine finished sixth in the hurdles. Captain Karl Goetze proved to be multi-talented as he posted wins in the 1000, mile, and two mile during many dual meets. Because of the strong individual runners, the team benefitted as a whole through their inspiration. Strengthened by many hours of Coach Steve Pike ' s tough work outs, the guys finished in sec- ond place at the League championship meet behind only Winchester. As diver Jimmy Curtin grabbed the team ' s lone first place, the seniors along with juniors David Walsh and Tommy Winston plus freshmen Rob Plunkett and Jon Sampson finished within the top six places in their respective events. Concluding the season was the North Sectional Championship meet where the guys finished seventh overall with at least one swimmer finishing in the top twelve for seven events. The girls exhibited their talents even more clearly in a .69 point loss to an extremely strong Winchester team. Coach Michele McCarthy insured another winning season for the always impressive female gymnasts.
