BELMONT HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1981 Table of Contents Seniors P 11 Faculty and Administration p 103 Color Candids p 161 Activities P 71 Sports p 129 Class of 8 1 — all good things must come to an end. These four years were comprised of many good things, but they are rapidly ending. We will all have to go our separate ways, but the memories of our four years will never be forgotten. Who can forget the ski weekends at the Indian Head Motel with Mr. Yak and his wife? We were so well liked by the Motel that they never called us again. And how about the Camping trip when we missed the ferry going over because I decided to take the scenic route to Woods Hole? Then when we tried to set tents up at 1 1 :00 pm, it was a little difficult, but we did it . . . We Received such a nice letter from the Campground, and the moped shop begged us to come back and destroy their property. M A S H was definitely a SMASH, with two sell out crowds. The cast did one hell of a job, but it wouldn ' t have been possible without one of the finest ladies at Belmont High School, Mrs. B.J. Williams, to whom we will always be indebted. Then we have the class delinquents who sponsor keg parties regularly. These are just a few of many memories we had at Belmont High School. 2 When we first entered Belmont High School, we were wel- comed by Mr. William McGuirk, who was our class advisor for two years. He helped us through two difficult years. But we made it!!!!!!! When we reached our Junior year, we could not have been given a better class advisor than Mr. Eric Anderson. He has been with us through every phase of the past two years. We can ' t forget his charming wife who accompanied him to our gala class parties and other class activities. We owe an abun- dance of gratitude to both of these fine individuals. I could go on forever thanking all the people who helped make our four years such a tremendous success. There are also many, many more memories I could recall, but like I said, all good things must come to an end. Class of 1981 — Thanks For The Memories! Joe Nolan 3 4 FV Memories: CELEBRATE . . . The football season seems too short. We practiced so hard and so long for the first game, and before we knew it, we were at the Thanksgiving Day rally. Our season was more of a success than our record shows. Some of the games were so close that one key play would have made the difference; Woburn and Watertown for example. The season was fun, many good friends were made, and the memories will never be fortotten. A simple statement which eventually became the unforgettable theme of the 1980 Girl ' s Soccer Team. Combining superior team- work, individual skill, positive attitude, and a desire to win, our team made history in Belmont by becoming the first ever to qualify for the Girls ' State Tournament. Although the tourney game ended in a 1-0 loss, we still feel that the overall season was a tremendous success. We believe that the true meaning of the word team was achieved through the discipline, motiva- tion, spirit, and comradeship of each team member. Also, high praises are in order to our coach, Mr. Howick, for his undeniable interest, support, and dedication throughout the course of the season. We had the talent and the ability to go to states, but we couldn ' t quite put it together. We want to thank Coach Mahoney for his spirit and enthusiasm. The coach once said that not every team goes to B.U., but at least some of the players on our team did have that experience, and that ' s something we will never forget. The Boys ' Cross Country season was a success in the terms of each member ' s dedication, and his hope for the team as a whole. Although our record was not a winning one, the cooperation of all the members and new friendships that arose gave us a winning feeling. We thank our coach, Mr. Flaherty, for another year and a spirited attitude during every practice and meet. 138 139 Boy ' s Record: 1-8 Girl ' s Record: 5-4 Team spirit and dedication resulted in a successful season for the Girls ' Cross Country Team. Considering that half of our team consisted of new members, we think that the team did very well. The most rewarding parts were the new friendships and spirit that grew throughout the season. We greatly appreciated Mrs. McClary ' s patience, enthusiasm, and friendship. We won ' t forget the bus rides, practices, chlorine, cheers, senior relay, and divers. Good luck to Annie, Ann, and next years ' team. Remember: From year to year the girls ' swim team ' s got more cheer. Record: 5-4 BEST SEASON EVER! We finished undefeated, led by the hard-working tri-captains Jeanne Bruzzese, Jean Con- ley, Amy Lipkin, and coach Ed Powers. In the league meet, Bruzzese (won all around), Julie Estin, Lisa Hume, Lipkin, and Conley placed Belmont first. The whole team competed in the District meet and the State meet. This season ' s record has been the best ever for a Belmont High Gymnastic Team! We ' ll always remember the Locker Room after the last meet and the Banquet. Coach Stephen Pike dedicated himself to the achievement of a successful and rewarding season. Front row: Mona Martin, Kate Cunningham, Theresa Kelly (Captain), Leigh Bonnano, Kathy Lyons. The Girls ' Varsity Basketball Team did not have an outstanding record this season. We were a very young team, with only two seniors, and during the season we were constantly plagued with injuries. Competing in the especially tough Middlesex League, we showed a lot of character, always ready to play with a lot of hustle and desire. We would like to thank Mr. Howick for his dedication and time. Although we had a disappointing year we can look back on some fond memories. We enjoyed playing hockey and forming new friendships on and off the ice. Our coaches worked very long and hard to help us win. There were many opportunities to turn our season around but we could never play to our potential. Games just slipped away in the season was our 3-2 victory over Burlington knocking them out of the state tournament. Not quite up to par with last year ' s record, of 8-4, our team had overwhelming desire and intestinal fortitude, making them a team to remember. Best of luck to next year ' s team. The indoor track team had a winning season; its record was 3-2-1. But beyond the wins or losses, our team, with track as its foundation, built many lasting friendships and memories. We created and carried on many tradi- tions: a new warm up exercise, the Pam Am, the mandatory clothes swap and our own rendition of many hit songs — “have a track a team being one. Our Coach, Mel Wenner, who always tried to maintain the reputation of Wenner ' s Winners , served as a constant example of dedication and hard work. I have taught for seven years, in three different school systems, and have had contact with many kids. But I have never felt as close to a group as I have felt with this one. These feelings not only include the officers, but extend to each member of the class, whether I knew you through sports, through class of ' 81 functions, through academic activities, through nonschool sponsored trips, to simply working with some of you on my car. You have made an impression on me that will last forever. I will continue to teach in hope that I will run into a class again which is as rewarding to work with as you have been. To those of you who breezed through four years at BHS: watch out! Hard work will be needed in the future; to those who struggled at BHS, keep at it; you ' ll make it.
