N elmow j 9 ( cwu ly 69 99 ( fjhxyy 131 177 As the last moments of our lives at Belmont High School fleetingly pass, we will hold tight to the memories. No one ever dreamed these years would pass so quickly. We are leaving a time in our lives which we can never recapture but one which is never to be forgotten. It is impossible for anyone to calculate the immense changes in the Class of 1977 during four years. 2 Anyone would have difficulty determining an area of our lives untouched by the experience of high school. The first and foremost change is we have increased our knowledge through our education at Belmont High School. We have matured a great deal in every way but especially in our behavior and in matters of taste. Our sense of judgment has grown to a capacity where we can no longer be referred to as children. This new sense of judgment is accompanied by entirely different attitudes towards life. We have incorporated new ideas into our value systems. The one change which encompasses all is a newly-developed sense of awareness. Through all that has happened to us, we are now tremendously more aware of ourselves and one another. We have learned to utilize our senses to derive more from all areas of life. Very simply, this se nse of awareness has made us more intel- ligent human beings. The people we have come to be during these years are the foundations of the people we will be for the rest of our lives. After all our learning there are still many ques- tions which are answerable only in time. If we could determine our futures, life would not be the same. We are forced to wait and wonder. But everything will become less mysterious and more secure if, in- stead of waiting, we use every resource possible to work for a world of reason and understanding. If this is possible, our futures will, inevitably, be bright. However, most of their efforts would have been useless if it had not been for the rest of the hard-working class members who have helped on so many events and projects. This includes the prom, the yearbook, the play, and Senior Week as well as our fund raising events. It is these two groups of peo- ple that are responsible for our success as the Class of 1977. As I reflect back on my two years with you people, I must say I have never been associated with a finer group of young adults. I have thoroughly enjoyed being your advisor and I hope that in the future you can look back at your four years at BHS with fond memories. I know the class of 1977 has many memories that I will be able to look back on in old age and feel proud and warm inside. How can I ever forget: Coop’s cam- paign Speech . . . Senior Week . . . MiJI S M Coach Quotes Mr. Arangio Football “Athletics is a means of education through competitive activities and should be an integral part of the complex educational system. It is a vehicle providing a competitive environment for the gifted and non-gifted athlete. The maximum development of both mind and body should be attained in accordance with each individual’s abilities.” Mr. Baker Freshman Soccer and Hockey “The will to win will win” Mr. Bartley Boys’ Track “Participation, Hard Work, and Dedication, and you’ll be number one.” Miss Bentz Girls’ Swimming “Just go out there and try your best. No one can ask more from an individual.” Mr. Coleman Sophomore Football “Sports should be fun for all the individuals involved. They should always be kept in perspective and compli- ment a student’s academic and physical growth.” Mr. Flaherty Boys’ Tennis and Cross Country “Remember that these are both team and individual sports. The talents and skills you develop now, you’ll be able to use for the rest of your life.” Mr. Giangregorio Freshman Football “Every boy in some way is tough and he will fight for something. To play foot ball in this day takes courage, due to the fact of everything there is to give up in order to play football. Remember: Pride, Determination, Desire.” Mr. Goldman Freshman Track “Run for fun.” Mrs. Greehan Girls’ Tennis “My philosophy as a coach has been to encourage each member of the team to reach her full potential as a tennis player. I feel the real meaning of high school athletics is the personal experience of the participants and what it does for them in their educational development.” Mr. Kelliher Baseball “Athletics is more than just wins and losses. It teaches a young man to accept responsibility and to mature in his own way.” Mr. Mahoney Soccer “If you can’t do the job in the classroom, you won’t do the job on the field. Academics come first, soccer is sec- ond and everyone involved will have fun in the end.” Mr. McMullen J.V. Soccer “Athletics are overrated; academics are more impor- tant. But the person who has successfully integrated the two has earned a real letter in life.” Mr. Miller Athletics Director “Thinking — If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don’t; if you’d like to win, but you think you can’t it’s almost a cinch you won’t. If you think you ' ll lose, you’re lost. For out of the world we find Success begins with a fellow’s will — It’s all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are; You’ve got to think high to rise, You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man, But sooner or later the man who wins. Is the man who thinks he can.” Mr. Nihan Wrestling “Winning isn’t everything, but making the effort to win is!” Miss Nostrand Softball “Athletics in high school are tremendously important. Learning to deal with competition, win or lose, as a spec- tator or as the athlete, is hopefully one accomplishment achieved through athletics.” Mr. Pyatt Boys’ Swimming “Each athlete should have an equal opportunity to par- ticipate in athletics. He should be able to set and attain his own goals. And finally, everyone should be oriented with the team aspect of athletics.” Mr. Schlesinger Girls’ Freshman Basketball “Girls’ sports are the most exciting form of sports. It may not be as skillful or as fluid as that of boys; but the competition and enthusiasm is greater and keener than that exhibited by the boys.” Mr. Viglirolo Hockey “Without discipline in athletics it is impossible to instill a positive attitude or to insure respect from the players.” Mr. Wenner Girls’ Track “Anyone choosing to go out for a sport should be given the opportunity. When he graduates he will have learned self-discipline, a desire and knowledge of how to keep physically fit throughout his lifetime and be able to look back on his team experiences with pleasure.” Mr. White Football “Part of my philosophy has been influenced by what former U.S. Senator Eugene McCarthy once said, ‘Sports and Politics are very similar; we are often smart enough to understand them both, but dumb enough to think they are the most important things in our lives.’ 160 162 In appreciation to Mr. John Corrigan for 33 years of dedication to Belmont High School students. 163 . . . Without our advisor, Mr. Roger Mulford, we never would have been able to complete our yearbook. We were fortunate to have a very talented and enthusiastic person to guide us along the way. Mr. Mulford gave more to this year’s yearbook than anyone could expect. We would like to use this space to thank Mr. Mulford although we know our thanks are not enough. We would like to express our sincere grat- itude to everyone who helped us during the year. Many people contributed, each in their own special way, to help make the 1977 yearbook possible. Most of all, we would like to thank the Class of ' ll who created the memories of which this book is about.
