BELMONT HIGH 1975 YEARBOOK Candids 2 Seniors 17 Administration Faculty 73 Activities 97 Sports 121 CANDIDS 1 w (•e [ r m . It is only (in leaving) that we must try to sever the many emotional ties that we have secured during our high school years. Can we realize how many, varied and strong, these ties are, making the task of severing them impossible? My high school years will always be a part of me. 7,0 ' 0 trgM i J ' vut it • «iin I ' It ' s funny, but it seems whenever you ask someone what they thought of high school you get a negative answer. Not me, I really kinda liked it. As far as I ' m concerned it ' s just one of those places where you get out of it exactly what you put into it. We were lucky, we had a lot of people who put a lot into high school and got a great deal out of it. On the other hand, we had some who put nothing into it and got nothing out of it. I guess that ' s the way it goes. School extended beyond just going to classes. In the fall, the excitement the football team created was gen- erated throughout the school, resulting in overflow crowds at all the games. The Boston Globe be- gan publicizing the “new Marauders with headlines such as Bel- mont is for real and You ' ve gotta believe in Belmont. The foot- ball season of 1974 re- vived a long lost epi- demic of winning fever at Belmont High. While school did in- volve the all too often tedious repetition of daily assignments, most of our time was spent in learning how to get along with other people. There was al- ways lots going on from Key Club car washes to Senior Play rehearsals to just being with friends. 10 I mmi When senior year came I began to make sense out of the things I was doing. Maybe it was because everyone expected us to have a direction or a goal but all I knew was that my life was beginning to take form. It was sad to think about all the times that were wasted in uncertainty yet the coming- out part was best of all. The entire class of 1975 remembers Miss Austin as one who is extremely de- voted, unselfish, and en- couraging. During her four years as our class ad- visor, her positive attitude and sound advice were a continual inspiration to those working with her. We feel that the success of our class was largely due to her efforts. Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower, we will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind. — William Wordsworth Opposite; senior CLASS OFFICERS, Rick Boyle, Vice- President; Maura Nolan, President; Elaine Digiovanni, Secretary; Lisa Markarian, Treasurer; Gina Duchaney, Assistant Treasurer 16 PAUL JOSEPH ACHORN 39 Leslie Rd. Alberta Cleary has given thirty-four years to the athletic program at Belmont High School. As both an instructor and a coach, Miss Cleary has instilled a sense of athletic prowess in two generations of girls at B.H.S. For twenty-nine years, up until 1970, she coached field- hockey, girl ' s basketball, and softball, and served as the only girls ' P.E. instructor at Belmont High. Mr. T. Meldon Wenner, her colleague and friend for all of her years at B.H.S., describes this as, an awful lot for one woman to handle . He goes on to say, she is a quiet, friendly woman, the only way you ever knew she was there was that her job was always done and done well. Miss Cleary ' s dedication to athletics is overshadowed only by her dedication to her girls. Her philosophy of hard play and good sportmanship has been spread over three decades of Belmont graduates. Miss Cleary has coached many victorious teams in her career. Most recently she guided the 1974 softball team to the Middlesex League Championship and into the semi-finals of the state cham- pionship before losing a 1-0 heart- breaker. Miss B. Alberta Cleary has de- voted much of her life to educating and preparing Belmont graduates. Bel- mont owes a debt of gratitude to one of it ' s own, B. Alberta Cleary. 88 PHYSICAL EDUCATION Joseph Accornero Joan Bentz William Miller, Dept. A major activity which took lots of preparation was the first an- nual club fiesta held in the spring. The French Club had the unique experience this year of getting together to knead and bake twenty loaves of French bread. The following day a highly successful bread, cider, and cheese sale was held. The profits treated the club to a French movie and some French cuisine. The group spent countless hours after school during the fall, making posters. The girls tried to encourage school spirit and certainly practiced what they preached. Many of them, adorned in maroon and white hats, packed the home bleachers and squeezed into away game buses. Their tasks did not go unrewarded as they were able to witness both successful football and soccer seasons. The Spirit Association will not be I. forgotten at B.H.S. They also produced the third annual dessert theatre-in-the-round featuring the contemporary play Where Have All the Lightning Bugs Gone? an adaptation of the popular The Importance of Being Earnest, and the second appearance of the Shakespeare Club Improvisation Troupe. For the first time the club sponsored the Belmont entry in the Drama Festival. The major production in April marked a return to traditional interpretations of Shakespearean comedy by producing The Taming of the Shrew complete with Elizabethen costumes, music, and dancing. Shakespeare Club international Thespian Society The International Thespian Society has been established for those who wish to gain further exposure to all aspects of theatre production. Among other activities, I T S. members have participated in The New England Theatre Conference and have traveled through New York where they attended seminars on Broadway Production and toured several Broadway theatres backstage. The only loss was a close, heartbreaking meet against Need- ham, where Belmont trailed by a few points. We practiced our Joanies , played oscar, and watched the soccer games whenever Miss Cleary wasn ' t looking. Our final record showed us with four wins and six losses, three of which were by only one goal. Five people broke into the scoring column this season; Susan Rocha, Nancy Madanian, Susan Avtges, Nancy Kelley, and Suzanne Rousseau. The highpoint of the season was a long awaited vic- tory over Winchester, the first in eight years. Eight dedicated seniors leave the team this year with many newly established traditions . . . impinge! Miss Cleary Suzanne Rousseau, Capt. Debbie Rosales Nancy Kelley Barbara Kelley GIRLS BASKETBALL Kneeling (L-R), Suzanne Rousseau, (co-capt.); Judy Paratore, (co-capt.) Standing (L-R), Suzanne Rodriques, Sara Mantineo, Barbara Kelley, )udy Collins, Patty Shea, Coach Richard Howick, Beth Vinson, Patty Valvanis, Susan Rocha, Pam Grant, (missing from picture) Angela Basile and Faith Burchard We ' ve got high hopes, that ' s the way t he song went. We set for ourselves some high goals and spent four months working up to them. Our victories were overwhelming when we won, we won big, averaging a point spread of twenty one. We broke our team scoring record four times during the season, finally finishing with a new record of seventy one points. Dedication, long practices, spirit and respect for our coach helped us to reach our goals. Coach Howick is an incredibly dedicated man, we played and won for him. Individual as well as team efforts and a feeling of complete unity carried us into the State Tournament, where we set even more records. Judy Paratore scored an unbelievable thirty two points in the Tournament Opener, to break her previous record of thirty points. Including tournament play our final record stands at eleven wins and four losses. This season was one that neither the team nor the town will forget for seasons to come. Friendly ' s breakfasts and MacDonald ' s lunches, team meetings, lemon meringue pie, gatorade, Joe , big doof, elbows, trampoline club, red flag team, thumper, and especially we will never forget our coach nor each other nor the unity we shared for four memorable months. It ' s not how you start, it ' s how you finish, and we ' re going to finish on top . . .
