Foods Department Marie measures while Claire mixes. Mrs. Marjorie Playstead Cooking; Belmontian The Foods Department planned many activities this year. Lunch was served to the Veterans, a Thanksgiving dinner was arranged for one faculty member who was chosen by the popular vote of each class, and a Christmas brunch was provided for all faculty members. On December third, a Betty Crocker exam was taken by all food classes. The person with the highest score in the state won a $5000 scholarship. At the end of the year everyone voted for the best cook at Belmont High, the winner receiving a trophy from the Crisco Oil Company. All these events combined into an exciting year. Bring to a boil and then simmer. A penny for your pie, Janet. 23

Trimming the cartoon. ‘Maybe I can draw a straight line with a ruler?” Ed prepares for illustrating. Jane’s acrylic trees. Balance plus proportion plus repetition plus transition equals a decent painting. First, use the finder to “arrange forms in space” and be sure to employ “overlapping line”- it’s the first principle of composition. Try some acrylics with a palette knife or that conte crayon. Don’t forget what chiaroscuro is or how to make a tertiary color. Remember the Bauhaus and that film you saw on nature that reviewed the art principles. Definitely don’t despair if, when you’re in a hurry to clean up, the sink gets plugged up. Grin and bear the few rewards of posing for those protraits made with pastels. Then you’ll know how to apply “skill and taste to the production of beauty.” Vag applies a wash to his cartoon. 25
