Once a student gets beyond arithmetic and 2+2=4, he may find (despite the opinion of many parents) that modern math is quite interesting. After an introduction of X and y in algebra, he draws little pictures of triangles and rectangles in geometry. No matter how different in size he may have drawn two certain triangles, they must be proven congruent. Although few people have ever bothered to find (a+b) to a power of one hundred, at least the math student knows how to do it. Then one must solve such everyday problems as filling a tub that has a hole in it. Don’t forget trigonometry— it seems to keep repeating its functions in every mathematics course that one takes. Those who have completed trigonometry without reaching the limit of their interest may take calculus. Once a student has gone this far, ofte n his most common mistakes are made in arithmetic!
