This is indeed an impressive task, one requiring a keen perception as well as a boundless drive. Our administrators have never been lacking in these qualities. A mere thank you'’ for their sincere zeal and enthusiasm seems most inadequate, for it is impossible to express our gratitude to these people who have worked so hard and meant so much to us. MR. We of Belmont High School have been privileged to study with an especially competent faculty. In their understanding, inspiration, and perception, our teachers have enriched our lives. Early morning starts, stiff attendance rules, difficult music (with humorous moments) and stern discipline made us realize our goal and gave us a lasting satisfaction in Vespirit de musique. Like previous senior classes, we were surprised at the hidden talent we uncovered just in time. At the regular meetings of the Society, held in private homes on the first Monday of every month, talented people from outside the school were guests. Among the parents and friends of the members who presented informal talks were Dr. Cath on psychiatry, Mr. Wcingartcn on science and law, and Mr. Griswald on the M.T.A. The younger N.H.S. members will have to travel far to meet the standards of these programs. We would like to thank our distinguished lecturers for their inspiration! 75 EDITORS Editor-In-Chief Literary Editor Photography Editors Art Editors Personal Tabulation Managers Business Manager Head Typist TYPING—D. FOOTBALL Only powerful Wakefield was able to crack the famed Marauder defense. But the eventual Middlesex co-champions had to rely heavily on the arm of their All-Scholastic quarterback in coming from behind for a 26-14 victory. Led by everybody’s All-Scholastic and two time All-American Don Chiofaro, the Maroon placed four players on the All-Middlesex Team. All-Scholastic honorable mention winners Jim Wood and Tom Sar-kesian joined Steve McBride on the star-studded squad. Perhaps the most satisfying win of the season was the 14-0 Maroon victory over Winchester. The passing combination of Hal Emerson to Tom Nicosia and the fine running of underclassmen Bob Gardiner and Gerry Gerolamo sparked the Marauders to their first win over the Sachems since 1946. Visiting Watertown went home for the second straight year without a victory in the Thanksgiving Day finale. The Raiders had all they could do to salvage a tic. Game Trophy winner, Andrew Ley, was outstanding both offensively and defensively at center for the Maroon. Other senior standouts, Bob Chrusz, Dave Wcathcrbec and Rich Kazanjian, along with underclassmen Bob DeVito and Bob Mara, played some great football on the rain-drenched gridiron. The Maroon eleven of ’62 will long be remembered by local football fans. THE MARAUDERS of 62 left a blazing trail across the pages of Belmont football history. Co-captained by Jim Wood and Don Chiofaro, this was the team that handcuffed all opposition for the almost unbelievable record of eight shut-outs in nine games. Not another eleven in the State could boast of a finer defensive report card. 98 Coach Frink. J. Wood. D. Chiofaro. Co-Captains. A splash for the Maroon Hey all you Marauders! Hey all you Marauders! Under the expert guidance of Carl Seaman, the boys turned in some truly outstanding performances. “The Orchard Streeters” topped Lexington 27-30 in a Meet that was held in driving rain and high winds. Mahoney placed first; followed by John Schafer, Ron Pazzanese, and Mark Teagan. in fourth, fifth, and eighth, respectively. The Wakefield Meet featured a tremendous three-way battle for first place among Mahoney and two visiting boys. All three runners broke the Belmont course record of 13:53, but Brian had to settle for a third, two seconds behind the winning time of 13:50. In the Middlesex League Meet at Mount Hood Golf Course in Melrose, the Varsity placed fourth in a field of ten teams. Schafer finished eleventh and Mahoney seventeenth while Pazzanese, Teagan, and Tony Zer-mani were not far behind. The Maroon finished the season by taking a coveted seventh place in the big State Meet. Schafer and Mahoney deserve special praise for placing ninth and fourteenth out of two hundred and fifty. For all of the boys, 1962 was a rewarding Cross Country season. The booters, co-captaincd by Steve Micklcy and Pete Nelson, finished the ’62 season with a line 6-6 record. The two most impressive Maroon wins were thrilling, comc-from-bchind victories over Medford and M.I.T. freshmen. Mike Ullman’s pair of third period goals were instrumental in handing the Big Blue their only loss of the season, while Micklcy’s two unassisted tallies sparked the Marauders in their second half rally against the Engineers. Stellar goal-tending by Nelson helped the team to weather storm after storm in these and other games during the year. High scoring lineman, Dave Martin, Captain-elect Joe Burke and Rich White constantly kept the pressure on opposing goalies, as outstanding two-way play by John Maurer, Barry Kumins and Larry Goodman with steady defensive work by Chuck Anderson, Keith Randall and Rick Stone kept the ball out of the Maroon end. Underclassmen Charlie Occhino, Steve Newpol and John Smart also helped to make '62 a big year, and it is likely that they will form a strong nucleus for a successful team next year. 103 FIELD HOCKEY—Front Row: B. Coaches Cleary and Smith instructed the team in the intricacies of the game. Angela D’Andrea and Diane Diggins, our loyal managers, performed ably such invaluable chores as supplying us with oranges when the playing got rough. Led by Co-Captains Ellen Mara and Sharon O’Brien, the team compiled a 1-4-2 record. After the regular season was over, the team added their excitement to the Field Hockey Field Day held at Newton High School. 1962-1963 SCORES Belmont 8 Malden 0 Belmont 0 Brookline 0 Belmont 0 Winchester 7 Belmont 3 Lexington 7 Belmont 0 Melrose 2 Belmont 1 Concord 1 FIELD HOCKEY Fancy female slick work. 104 GIRI.S BASKETBALL—Front Row: M. The team this year was led by Co-Captains Carol Jaynes and Lorraine Benoit. Although the team lost five out of six games, the girls always fought hard, and spirit ran high. This year, the student body showed more interest in the game than ever before. The most exciting game was that in Lexington. Although Lexington was one of our top opponents, we lost by only one point. The managers, Edith Aldort and Martha Shangraw, did a wonderful job and will be back next year. With the Junior Varsity and those who arc still with us from the Varsity, next year’s season looks very promising, despite the attraction of this year’s squad for the gym floor. HOCKEY THE ’63 HOCKEY TEAM powered its way to the top of the fastest schoolboy ice loop in Massachusetts. Co-captained by Jim Wood and Dave Crisafulli, the Marauders compiled an over-all record of 13-3-1 while clinching their first title in the four year history of the Middlesex League and advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the State Hockey Tournament. All-Scholastic net-minder Dave “Kid Zero” Crisafulli added four more shut-outs to his credit, making a two-year total of twelve. Protected by an All-Star defensive trio of Don Chiofaro, Steve McBride and Dave Goldberg, “Cris” allowed only 24 goals in 17 starts. All-League selections, Jim Wood and Bob Gardiner sparked the lethal Marauder first wave. Woody received honorable mention for his hustling line play, while center Gardiner finished fourth in League scoring. Heads-up play by Tom McCafferty, John Labanara and Dave Weatherbee, three consistent lamp-lighters, helped balance the Red and Blue attack. In the feature game of the season, the Marauders edged defending champ Melrose 2-1. Gardiner and Labanara put the Red and Blue on the score board in this pressure-packed thriller. After two tics with the Raiders, the Marauders finally avenged their 7-0 loss in last year’s opener. An inspired Malden Catholic sextet downed the Marauders 5-2 in the tourney Quarter-Finals. Earlier Belmont victories over West Springfield and Charlestown were both impressive. Before the start of the season. Coach Bennett warned that the Red and Blue had “a long way to go.” Both he and Coach Viglirolo deserve a great deal of credit for bringing their charges over that long, hard trail to success. 107 Labs lights the lamp! CAPTAINED BY veteran playmaker Pete Marino, the ’63 Maroon quintet completed a rugged but rewarding season with a record of 5 wins and 12 losses. After winning two of their first three League encounters, the Mcl-mcn had high hopes for a Middlesex crown, but a prolonged mid-season losing streak clearly indicated that a title just wasn’t in the cards for this year. Tim Donovan, Belmont High's all-league center proved to be virtually unbeatable over the winter campaign. Singled out for All-Scholastic honorable mention, “Big Tim” averaged 17.1 points per game. Seniors Bob Chrusz and John Romeo, alternating at one forward position, and Joe Rahal combined steady boardwork with good scoring from the corners while Tom Sarkisian and John Sullivan were valuable in tight spots. Doug Wenner and Hal Emerson joined Peter in running the attack from the backcourt. It is hoped that the veterans of this year’s championship junior varsity, along with captain-elect Rahal, will turn into a strong varsity contender for next winter. In any event, Coach Wenner merits much praise for his patience and hard work with our hoopsters. BASKETBALL Kaz drives for big layout!! Zek from the corner Mark turns on the steam! COACH CARL SEAMAN'S Indoor Trackmen hung up their spikes at the close of the winter after compiling the most colorful team record of 1963. Co-captained by Brian Mahoney and Tom Foley, the “Armory Boys” finished fifth in Division Two standings of the Metropolitan League, while at the same time, they topped the entire field in Class B State Meet competition. Ted Todd, Brian Mahoney, Tony Zermani and George Fitzgerald made the best group of scorers in Division Two. Todd, sixth highest scorer in the division, was undefeated in the 300 in dual-meet competition. Mahoney finished eighth, followed by Zermani in twelfth. The State Meet proved to be the occasion for the team’s finest performance. Tom Foley and Ken Goldstein combined for a surprising six points in the 12 pound shot. Goldstein’s unexpected fourth place heave close behind Foley’s outstanding 49T gold medal effort. Todd finished second in the 300, and Mahoney was just edged at the wire in the 1000, but even these performances became of secondary importance in the end. Belmont trailed favored Cambridge High and Latin by 3 4 7 points going into the final event. The Cambridge boys needed only a fourth to hold their lead—Coach Seaman's charges had to win, and win they did! The Maroon “Fabulous Four” practically set the track on fire on their way to a faster Class B relay than any of the other 25 entrys. Todd, Zermani, Fitzgerald, and Mahoney covered the long Boston Garden distance in a speedy 2:30.2. Sophomore miler Bob Scarfo and captain-elect Goldstein should provide the nucleus for another fine team next year. Ken broke the school record Jwice this season; the second time, with a put of 50'7 and he has been pushing 53' in practice. Perhaps next year will sec a division title added to the State Championship. Goldstein gets set for record breaking put. Ill SKI CLUB—From Row: M. O'Connor. M. McManama. D. Martin. President: S. We arc very proud of our track team who won the Class B State Championship. We also watched the athletes at the Donkey Ball, which proved to be not only an enjoyable but a profitable event. This year Belmont was privileged to welcome the members of the Junior Classical League to our high school. This exciting convention showed us that culture can be fun. As graduation approached, the year became more exciting. Those who attended “Emeraude Enchantment” owe many thanks to the Junior Class for a wonderful evening. We will long remember the many hours of graduation rehearsals, the Senior Banquet, and Class Day. Our class was still able to hold the graduation outdoors despite the rainstorm. This was followed by the party Club 63” with entertainment by Jackie Washington. This memorable night ended with everyone looking forward to the reunion. tain: D. Wcathcrbec. P. Wheeler. P. Marino.
