Members of the Class of 1961: You have reached a new plateau in your preparation for your goal. Today brings a restful and welcome pause, a time to appraise the past and to reflect upon your scholastic achievement. In retrospect, you will agree that the task was not so arduous that you failed to enjoy colorful activities related to your educational training. It is well to evaluate your previous efforts, more important to take inventory of the present, and most essential to continue your endeavors in order that you may merit satisfying experiences in the years ahead. On March 12 a second chance arrived To do well on aptitudes—how many survived. Also in March, our dance in green Shamrock Shenanigans—a colorful scene. A few couples left early to do their best The next day on the National Merit test. Sayonara” as the climax of the year Brought many a smile and many a tear. Our new officers chosen were the best. The two Nancies, Spooks, and Tex. No more pencils, books, or teach” Found the Juniors at Wingarshcek Beach. What seemed impossible was now here-We had reached our senior year. Our first senior social was a dance, To Kickoff Kapers we did prance. Three semifinalists were later named To be our hopes for national merit fame. We realized with our first term grades That our marks we had to raise. On Borrowed Time”—a smashing success Showed the seniors at their best. Thanksgiving game caused many cold feet Later warmed by hot turkey meat. Fantasy in Frost” in the month of December Yielded joy to many a Belmontian member. Bells ushered in 1961 And our last lap of high school had begun. Our final set of midyears we attempted to pass To remain members of our esteemed class. Measuring for caps and gowns one day Proved graduation not far away. Passing midyears left more time for fun. But our college worries had barely begun. Before we knew it, Twas the month of May’ And the fifteenth was the decisive day. 16 $ Hi ‘Ui SUgSSSU The Prom began our senior whirl Ne’er forgot by boy or girl. Of food at the Banquet we ate our fill And found senior talent far from nil. C lass Day was a frollicking affair, f hen Booster’s Club gave us jackets to wear. The class beach party was a good combination Of sun, sand, water, and relaxation. Graduation night came at last And we bade a fond farewell to our class. It is now that we have reached our peak, But this too about 1961 is unique. Write 1961, then turn it around. It says 1961 upside down! We can’t judge what this means, although we’ve tried. THIS WAS YOUR LIFE Guidance Office Point of View “My parents want me to take the college course.” “I guess that I better not take five majors again next year.” “I want to take so many things—Physics, Math 13, Russian 2, Modern Problems, Creative Writing— what shall 1 do?” Why can’t I take six subjects?” “It’s the verbs that bother me.” “Can I take a test to tell me what I am good for?” Should I take the PSAT? When do I take the SAT and Achievements? “I want engineering.” “What educational opportunities are available in the Services?” “I want to be a social service worker—or an elementary school teacher.” “I want to go to l.B.M. School.” “I am so sleepy when I try to study after playing sports in the afternoon.” MR. ALBERT J. ORTON Dean of Boys GUIDANCE “I love Belmont High School.” Where can I really go to school next year?” I would like to go to that Open House—how do I get there—will you provide transportation?” I want a campus college —but not too far away so I can be home week-ends.” Can I join the Driver Education class this semester— I’ll be sixteen in June?” “Why didn’t I get the job?” “Absent?” “Forty days?” Why do I have to tell them I’m going to school in the fall—it’s only a summer job and I need the money?” “I’ve got to talk to someone.” (Tears) “I tried your system and it works.” 1 am completely undecided.” With our continuing good wishes to you all, Dorothy M.
