uor Courtesy KEN HIRD BLUEPRINT BELMONT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS ADMINISTRATION FACULTY CLASSES SENIORS ACTIVITIES SPORTS ADVERTISEMENTS REFLECTIONS WE now have reached a milestone in the river of time, high school graduation. Up to this time, the course of the river has been channeled for us, flowing through the protective banks of Belmont High School. As we approach the turbulence of the open seas, let us pause to look back at the myriads of reflections playing on the surface of our river. Some of these images arc gay and rippling—football games in the crisp, sparkling air. Some are deep and quiet—the rows of capped and gowned seniors marching to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance.” The water runs swiftly and the images arc fleeting. We have tried to capture some of them in the pages of this book, so that we may forever hold in our memories the reflections on our years at Belmont Senior High School. “Mirror, mirror on the wall,” Which year has been the best of all? Let’s go back to “fifty-eight” When to be sophomores was our fate. New-found freedom; life was gay, (Overlooking Sophomore Day.) Harder work for every one. High school wasn’t merely fun! The Lexington rally opened the year, And joyfully, dressed in red, wc cheered. The game was called because of rain, But postponement seemed a victory gain! Winter showed ability and ambition. Kevin and Paul brought our class recognition. Kevin tied for first in national track. And Paul became captain with his hoopster knack. Our first class meeting introduced Doctor B.’ To work with us in harmony. Electing officers for next fall Brought us Nancy, Arnie, Tex, and Paul. Passing finals, wc became Juniors for a year of fame. Junior Salute Hop was our first dance. Spirit and friendship it did enhance. PSAT’s the following week Proved some of us to be scholastically meek. One boy, however, did exceptionally well, As his 80 math score did tell. £ a s n }8 committee was formed in November, eir efforts gave us a new ring in December, so, th,s month Mood Indigo was presented, e viewed the streets of New York as we entered. December T W T F S 1 2 3 4 5 . 8 v ion 12 20 If Is 617 1810 2 On March 12 a second chance arrived To do well on aptitudes—how many survived. Also in March, our dance in green Shamrock Shenanigans—a colorful scene. A few couples left early to do their best The next day on the National Merit test. Sayonara” as the climax of the year Brought many a smile and many a tear. Our new officers chosen were the best. The two Nancies, Spooks, and Tex. No more pencils, books, or teach” Found the Juniors at Wingarshcek Beach. What seemed impossible was now here-We had reached our senior year. Our first senior social was a dance, To Kickoff Kapers we did prance. Three semifinalists were later named To be our hopes for national merit fame. We realized with our first term grades That our marks we had to raise. On Borrowed Time”—a smashing success Showed the seniors at their best. Thanksgiving game caused many cold feet Later warmed by hot turkey meat. Fantasy in Frost” in the month of December Yielded joy to many a Belmontian member. Bells ushered in 1961 And our last lap of high school had begun. Our final set of midyears we attempted to pass To remain members of our esteemed class. Measuring for caps and gowns one day Proved graduation not far away. Passing midyears left more time for fun. But our college worries had barely begun. Before we knew it, Twas the month of May’ And the fifteenth was the decisive day. 16 $ Hi ‘Ui SUgSSSU The Prom began our senior whirl Ne’er forgot by boy or girl. Of food at the Banquet we ate our fill And found senior talent far from nil. C lass Day was a frollicking affair, f hen Booster’s Club gave us jackets to wear. The class beach party was a good combination Of sun, sand, water, and relaxation. Graduation night came at last And we bade a fond farewell to our class. It is now that we have reached our peak, But this too about 1961 is unique. Write 1961, then turn it around. It says 1961 upside down! We can’t judge what this means, although we’ve tried. It's up to each one of you to decide. Today brings a restful and welcome pause, a time to appraise the past and to reflect upon your scholastic achievement. In retrospect, you will agree that the task was not so arduous that you failed to enjoy colorful activities related to your educational training. It is well to evaluate your previous efforts, more important to take inventory of the present, and most essential to continue your endeavors in order that you may merit satisfying experiences in the years ahead. George Higginbottom Principal MR. GEORGE HIGGINBOTTOM Principal ADMINISTRATION MR. LESLIE W. CROWSON Director of Belmont Vocational High School Dear Graduates, This Classbook will serve as a pictorial review of the experiences, friendships, and activities which you have enjoyed during your high school life. May it bring you much happiness in retrospect over the coming years, as well as serve to point up an increasing awareness of a productive and stimulating part of your student activities. MR. JOSEPH F. KOLOUCH Vice Principal 4 Sincerely, Leslie W. Crowson Director THIS WAS YOUR LIFE Guidance Office Point of View “My parents want me to take the college course.” “I guess that I better not take five majors again next year.” “I want to take so many things—Physics, Math 13, Russian 2, Modern Problems, Creative Writing— what shall 1 do?” Why can’t I take six subjects?” “It’s the verbs that bother me.” “Can I take a test to tell me what I am good for?” Should I take the PSAT? When do I take the SAT and Achievements? “I want engineering.” “What educational opportunities are available in the Services?” “I want to be a social service worker—or an elementary school teacher.” “I want to go to l.B.M. School.” “I am so sleepy when I try to study after playing sports in the afternoon.” MR. ALBERT J. ORTON Dean of Boys GUIDANCE “I love Belmont High School.” Where can I really go to school next year?” I would like to go to that Open House—how do I get there—will you provide transportation?” I want a campus college —but not too far away so I can be home week-ends.” Can I join the Driver Education class this semester— I’ll be sixteen in June?” “Why didn’t I get the job?” “Absent?” “Forty days?” Why do I have to tell them I’m going to school in the fall—it’s only a summer job and I need the money?” “I’ve got to talk to someone.” (Tears) “I tried your system and it works.” 1 am completely undecided.” With our continuing good wishes to you all, Dorothy M. Anderson Dean of Girls Albert J. Orton Dean of Boys 5 MISS DOROTHY M. ANDERSON Dean of Girls FACULTY TEACHERS, by their training and accomplishments, are committed to the spread of knowledge, as the doctors are to health. Teachers work in the broad field of the intellect, and have tremendous power to influence and to inspire others. The teacher imparts knowledge to students by instruction, direction, encouragement, and example, and his influence ends only at the limits of the mind. The teacher must always look forward: to improved methods, new situations, and higher goals. The teacher is expected to change and to adapt, while maintaining the highest standards of truthfulness, sincerity, and responsibility. We have looked to our teachers for these qualities, and we are proud of them, too. For their instruction, their foresight, and their dedication, we honor them. Mr. John L. Car Wash in the spring ... impressive Initiation, November 1960— CHARACTER: “That which a person truly is, the sum of qualities by which a person is distinguished from others . . . includes a strong sense of responsibility, promptness in living up to it, honesty to oneself and to others, high moral principles, strength of conviction, and the courage to express it, courtesy, unselfishness, good-sportsmanship, the ability to do what is best although it may not be what is most pleasant . . . It is our duty to strive to improve our characters so that by being better citizens of the world, we may work for a better world. (Ruth Spivack) SCHOLARSHIP: “Education is a preparation for broader service to mankind . . . The unlimited heritage of the past falls to him who truly seeks, through thoughtful study, to come into his inheritance . . . Because he knows the past and has learned about the present, the student can wisely make the future something more than chance ... All of us arc endowed with unlimited mental possibilities, but the scholars arc those who nurture and develop these possibilities to perfection . . . This perfection is within the reach of all, but he who desires this must earn it by a faithfully hard and tireless effort which is never lost but instead, returned with manifold blessing. (Roberta Scpucha) SERVICE: ‘To attain the fullest life, one cannot live for himself alone . . . Those who serve others are repaid with the personal satisfaction and feeling of good will that come from within . . . The origination of service in youth produces an adult who will be of benefit to his country . . . The true essence of service lies in the simple giving of oneself, one's time, and one’s ability wherever there is need.” (Paula McCrensky) LEADERSHIP: The ability of a personality to guide others into action ... In order to benefit humanity, it must proceed from a genuine affection for mankind, and, of course, a strong character . . . There must be sacrifice, humility, courage, and self-confidence in leadership . . . Since the stability of democracy now hangs in the balance and we desperately need inspiring and capable leaders, it is hoped that the members of the National Honor Society, who have already proven themselves leaders during their high school careers, will accept the challenge and become leaders of courage and faith in the future. A group of unseasoned sophomores and juniors teamed with several capable seniors to form a spirited, courageous unit. Led by Arnold Parscghian and Peter Pietz, two dynamic leaders, the Frinkmen compiled a respectable 3-6 record against the rugged competition in the Middlesex League. This 3-6 record is deceptive since at least three games could have easily gone either way. Only bad breaks and untimely injuries prevented victories. CO-CAPTAINS P. PIETZ AND A. PARSEGHIAN WITH HEAD COACH FRINK (Center). 95 ON THE SIDELINES. DUMMY DRILL. WE’VE GOT THE BALL! The game most Belmont fans will remember for a long time was the Thanksgiving Day contest with Watertown. Before the game, little, if any, chance was accorded the Locals to stay within even three touchdowns of the highly-regarded Watertown powerhouse. Despite the odds, the Belmont team played inspired football in the first half and held Watertown to a 6-6 score at half-time. As the game progressed, the frantic pace and the brilliance of a superb Watertown team told on the Belmont boys and Watertown triumphed 18-6. Although defeated, the Frinkmen gained deserved admiration and respect from the entire town for their magnificent performance. Arnie Parseghian, Peter Pictz, Bob Wilcinski, Rick DcStcfano, John Kollias, John Lund, Larry Devine, John Johnson, Al Bryant and Paul McMackin, are all names which will be long-remembered in Belmont football annals. FIELD HOCKEY 1960-’61 was a building year for the Field Hockey Team, with many sophomores and juniors gaining experience. Although they were too handicapped by injuries and inexperience to make an impressive record, they put up a valiant and spirited light led by Captains Beth Rooney and Debby Stone. There is every reason to hope for the success of next year’s team under the leadership of our able coaches, Miss Cleary and Miss Smith. 98 SOCCER SOCCER TEAM —Front Row: W. Walker, S. Micklcy. E. The 1960 Soccer Team, hard-hit by injuries and inexperience, underwent early season difficulties before attaining top form. Captained by Steve Ullman and Dick Orton, the “Sea-gulls” matched their traditionally strong prep school and college freshmen rivals. High scorers were Dick Orton, John Guthrie and Steve Ullman. Ed Maurer a brilliant halfback prospect, Steve Nelson and Roger Fishman anchored the defense. Bob Morrill at right wing, Don Mcroth at goalie, Bill Walker at fullback, and Ted Gross at halfback made vital contributions to the team effort. The outstanding contest of the season was against the Tufts University Freshmen. Given a quick lead on two goals by Steve Ullman, Belmont trailed 4-2 entering the fourth period. Dick Orton picked up three clutch goals in the space of five minutes. This 5-4 victory- was most satisfying. Coach Charles Brown merits much credit for his outstanding guidance of the soccer team. INDOOR TRACK Belmont has good reason to be proud of its Indoor Track team this year, as it capped third place in the B.A.A. Meet and the Class B state championship. The success of the track team is the fruit of much labor and the outstanding individual performances of Captain Kevin O’Brien, Brian Pinslcy, Joe Foster, and David Reid. Captain O’Brien is probably the best all-around trackstcr ever to compete at Belmont High School. For the last two years he has been superior to any high jumper and hurdler in Massachusetts, if not in all New England. Kevin has high jumped 6'5 and has fled the hurdles in 5.9 seconds. In the National Track Championship held in Madison Square Garden, O’Brien took second place in the high jump and fourth place in the hurdles; thus capturing more points than any other competitor in the Meet. As the track season progressed, Belmont’s difficulties increased. Injuries to Bob Morrill and Ted Todd hurt badly, and the Metropolitan League Championship eluded Belmont’s grasp. However, dismay failed to show on the smiling face of Coach Carl Seaman who is to be complimented for his fine job of coaching his team to its prominent position. OUR NATIONAL HERO: KEVIN O’BRIF.N. S. vonMayrhauscr Led by Co-Captains David Reid and Brian Pinslcy, Coach Seaman’s harriers converted hard work into victory, posting a very creditable 5-2 record in Divisions Competition. They placed seventh out of the eighteen teams in the Middlesex League Meet, and eighth in Class B at the State Meet. Although the squad failed to realize its full potential, several promising newcomers emerged on the hill ’n dale scene. With many of these bright prospects slated to return next fall, the outlook on a League title is quite optimistic. Best of luck to Co-Cap-tains-clcct, Bob Andclman and Bob Preston! MURRAY SNATCHES REBOUND. SCRAMBLE UNDER THE BACKBOARD. BASKETBALL Coached by Mel Wenner and inspired by Paul Larkin, the Belmont High School Basketball Team had a generally successful season. Failure to make the Tech Tourney due to latc-scason difficulties, was a deep disappointment for the Belmont Five which at times played brilliantly. Captain Paul Larkin, the last of Belmont’s royal dynasty of basketball players, assumed the position of Belmont's all-time high-scorer by amassing a total of 378 points in his last season. Bob Murray, an outstanding center, was selected for the second team of the Middlesex League’s All-Stars. Throughout the entire season John Guthrie, a 6'3 forward provided competent rebounding, and John “Buff” Burrill remained a scoring threat. At forward, Donny Mcroth scrapped tenaciously every minute he played. Dave Martin, Bill Marino, Ray Attner, Fred Dickhaut, and Dick McCormick were valuable reserves who added immensely to the team effort. Prospects for next year appear bright with the return of three varsity players and some sharp underclassmen. DRIBBLE. DRIBBLE UTILE BALL. IN THE HANDS OF CAPTAIN PAUL. REACHING FOR THE HEIGHTS. 103 The Hockey Team, after five or six mediocre games, suddenly caught fire and finally finished in third place in the Middlesex League, only two points from first place. The Bennettmen’s defensive alignment was outstanding. Will Mahoney, a second team Middlesex League All-Star, presided in the goal. Captain Bob Wilcinski, also a second team selection, anchored the right defenseman’s position, while Tom Courtney, a first team All-Star, completed the solid defense as left defenseman. On the high-scoring first line for Belmont were Gerry Boyle, Joe Monahan, a second team All-Star selection, and Steve Bettencourt. Jimmy Wood, Pat Young, Dick Rooney, and Jack Gardner saw considerable action. An excellent defense and a scoring punch characterized the Belmont sextet. The Belmont boys, although not chosen for the State Hockey Tournament, were an exceptional team. The boys who arc returning next year, however, promise to be even better. Behind until the last quarter, the girls managed to win the game with some brilliant playing during the last few minutes. Six losses followed this impressive start, and their real ability was not shown again until the last game when they tallied 54 points against 22 for Concord. Special recognition should be given to Linda Howatt and Sharon Heaslip for their tireless efforts, and Captains Janet Comeau and Jeanne Montague for their capable leadership. 106 1961 BLUEPRINT - SUPPLEMENT BELMONT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BELMONT, MASS.
