WE DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO LEARNING. Its storehouse as found in books, in the products of inventive genius as men and women have fashioned and reshaped natural resources for useful purposes, and in the experiences of men and women as they have found solutions to material, moral, and spiritual problems------all these provide a heritage for us to share. Learning can be achieved through trial and error, but the riches of past experience as revealed in instruction and study can contribute vicariously to reduce its requirements in terms of time, effort, and even pain. To fail to seek benefit from the past is foolish; to live apart from educational influence in the present reduces the strength and purpose of living; and to plan a future without thought of learning diminishes life's potential for true happiness and success. Learning can provide both breadth and depth in life experience. Within the framework of what is known, one can find joy in discoveries and adventures into the unknown.
