THE SENIOR CLASS OF BELMONT HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS ITS 1960 CLASSBOOK THE BLUEPRINT BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS REFLECTIONS on three years at Helmont Senior High School are fast blending into a medley of hurry, climax, drama, disappointment, and success. No two of us have experienced identical patterns; however, the sum total for each classmate has added skills and knowledge, and provided a sense of growing up for the world of tomorrow. In retrospect, it has been wonderful to have been here! WE DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO LEARNING. Its storehouse as found in books, in the products of inventive genius as men and women have fashioned and reshaped natural resources for useful purposes, and in the experiences of men and women as they have found solutions to material, moral, and spiritual problems------all these provide a heritage for us to share. Learning can be achieved through trial and error, but the riches of past experience as revealed in instruction and study can contribute vicariously to reduce its requirements in terms of time, effort, and even pain. To fail to seek benefit from the past is foolish; to live apart from educational influence in the present reduces the strength and purpose of living; and to plan a future without thought of learning diminishes life's potential for true happiness and success. Learning can provide both breadth and depth in life experience. Within the framework of what is known, one can find joy in discoveries and adventures into the unknown. Learning enables youth to do its part in building for a better tomorrow. DEDICATION WE DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO THE FACULTY. To be associated with teachers who have shared their knowledge and skill sincerely and competently has given us a foundation never to be forgotten. THIS BOOK TO CURRICULUM. Our ability to communicate ideas in English and foreign tongue, in arithemetical and geometrical figures, in written and spoken word, in social and scientific terminology, and in the creative arts has been encouraged and strengthened. We are grateful for the many courses offered by our school for the benefit of its students. Principal Higginbouoni gives generously o( his lime in counseling boys. J. Barry, J. Robbio WE DEDICATE The first plateau of your formal learning program has been achieved. In retrospect, it has been the nurturing of your talents for the purpose of learning to live and to make the necessary adjustments as substantial citizens in our society. The future will unveil challenging experiences for you to enhance your living through learning. Your degree of success and happiness will be measured by your ability to evaluate the past and build on the present as you plan for the future. George Higginbottom Principal Mr. Joseph F. Kolouch Vice Principal Miss Dorothy M. Anderson Dean of Girls AGENDA “When do I take the 'Boards’?” Is the SAT a ‘College Board’?” “Who is eligible for ‘Belmontian’?” “I reported at 2:15 and he wasn’t there.” “What about my ‘security’ college? Will I make it?” “Will I have a chance to take the reading course?” “What will happen if I fail next marking period?” “How can I stay after school—I work?” “How do I get on the babysitting list? Will I have to wash dishes?” Do I need working papers?” “What do they mean by fringe benefits?” “How soon do I get vacations with pay?” “How many can I flunk and be eligible?” “I’m completely undecided. What should I do?” 7 Mr. Leslie W. Crowson Director of Belmont locational High School Mr. Albert J. Orton Dean of Boys Miss Verna B. English 12—Fourth Period Class The study of the English language is a basic and important need for all of us. It is therefore iinjjerativc that it be taught by excellent teachers. In all respects, Mrs. Hornsey has “filled the bill.” The staccato interjection of word?” when one was uncertain of a meaning was but a part of her delightful and thorough effort to teach us vocabulary. Mrs. Hornsey can make even the dry contents of Vitalized English” really vitalized. Her profound acquaintance with Bill” Shakespeare's writings made Macbeth come alive, and it has kindled a life-long interest in the varied plays and sonnets of this immortal bard. They have mastered the basic fundamentals of electricity, a few via some very shocking experiences, and have advanced from house wiring and oil burners to complex circuits of motors controlled from remote starters. Some of the boys have become qualified to be licensed journeymen, and will find unlimited opportunities in the ever-expanding field of electricity. The players had a sense of pride and a desire to win. Despite some costly mistakes, our boys never gave up, but proceeded to give Belmont its best football team since 1932.” This year's squad did not rely on any one player to lead them to victory: the games were won by team effort. Special credit is due the unsung heroes, the linemen, for, with their superb blocking, the runners went for good yardage, and the passers could complete their throws. When a successful sports team suddenly enjoys laurels of success, the credit can be given to the captains and to the players whose desire to win gave their fans something to cheer. SOCCER The soccer team reserved its best effort for the very last game of the season, a game which saw it bow to an undefeated Lin-coln-Sudbury jxnvcrhouse by the score of 1 to 0. The lone goal of this spirited fray was scored late in the fourth period and marred a sensational performance by goalie Roger Fishman. Credit should go to full- backs Dean Cameris and Dave Briggs, in particular, and the whole team, in general, for its excellent showing. A year ago the team stressed character, but won no meets; its best was a tie with Watertown. This year the boys ran harder and ended with a 3-3-0 record and a seventh place in the State Meet. Many of the boys shared hands in getting these victories. Next year Co-Captains Dave Reed and Brian Pins-ley will have a potentially strong team of harriers backing them up.
