Basketball Belmont s powerful Blue Eagle Basketball Team hung up the best season of the school s history and also 1n the h1story of Belmont County They are the proud owners of three very beautxful trophxes recemved mn thexr torr1d march through the County Sect1onal and Dxstrlct Tournaments Not untxl they met Walnut Creek s seven man team d1d the Eagles cool off But that s enough for the game that every body wants to forget ln the season s opener the Eagles ran rough shod over a f1ght1ng Freeport team 76 45 Thls same team gave Belmont plenty of trouble later on 'lhe second game of the year saw the Belmonters eke out a close 58 57 w1n over Barnesvllle It was a tough game and an uphlll flght all evenxng Then Bauman s boys played host to strong W0OdSf1e1d three n1ghts before Chr1stmas It was a thrlller w1th Belmont comlng out on top 64 59 After the ho11days Belmont went down to 1ts f1rst defeat when they bowed to the Holloway Club 6l 59 a very unexpected upset The Eagles got back on the wxn tra1l by dumpxng Bethesda 53 50 and Freeport 58 57 for the e1ghth wm of the year Then Beallsvzlle came to town bow1ng to Belmont 71 64 J1m McKeen was he whole show as he poured 27 polnts through the net The Eagles then lost thelr second game of the year to Class A St Cla1rsv1l1e The bxg floor and glass backboards hurt Belmont s chances The score was 58 53 The Bethesda Panthers came to Belmont to seek revenge for an earlxer loss Then came the thrlller at Flushmg The Eagles were 9 po1nts behmd w1th 4 mmutes to go but came roarlng home to w1n 63 61 Then came the thlrd defeat of the year at W00dSf1e1d Jake Motter played lxke an ALL AMERICAN that mght and It surely wasn t h1s fault we lost He led the scor1ng w1th 9 po1nts and took every rebound The score 42. 36 Belmont then started w1nn1ng and weren t stopped untll they hit Walnut Creek Then Barnesvllle came to town and were humbled very eas1ly 74 65 Wayne Parker has a speclal evemng dumpmg m 15 pomts 1 hen came the Holloway return game at Holloway W1th Lefty Mzlhoan lead mg the way the Bauman boys won gomg away 62 45 Lefty made 14 pomts The Eagles closed out the year w1th a sweet vlctory over Sc1o 67 64 lt was coveted revenge for last year s loss to the boys from the Pottery town The followxng week the Eagles roared 1nto tournament play and laced Smxth Twp 75 39 to move xnto the seml fmals of the County Class B Tournament agalnst the only Class B county team that had defeated them Holloway But the Belmont boys showed super1or1ty ln thump1ng the Rallroaders 56 47 The Blue Eagles proved very convlncmgly m the final agamst tough Flushmg that they were class of the county Our boys poured It on and by the thxrd quarter 26 . . - . . t Sam Burkhart's six straight points iced the game for Belmont 70-63.
