The play is about comic book writers and their strug- gle to satisfy the owners of the comic book. As the play opens, Zack (Paddy Hanner) gets carried away as he tells Dinah (Trish Strain) of his ambitions — I want to run down National Enquirer re- porters with my limousine! Much to the chagrin of Dinah, Zack and artist Sam (Chris Ceponis), Stan the Man Leason [Greg Papazian), owner of the CRIMSON SCARAB (the comic book they write for) pays a visit to the staff accompanied by his sidekick Andrea (Roma Dudko). Below — Leason tells Charlotte (Ann Meyer) that the book needs to be spiced up a bit. Nothing Kinky. Just a little boy girl stuff. The Staff is Furious because Leason also wants a new char- acter added, a new love interest for the Crimson Scarab. After many days of work, the staff comes up with an answer to Leasons demands. They Cre- ate Glitter Girl. Later at his apt., Zack works to come up with a solution to their problem: Satisfy Leason ' s demand for sex in comic books without compromising the reputation of the book. As he pecks away at the typewriter. Dinah shows up very drunk. Upon inquiry, Zack leams that Dinah had dinner with Eric a married man she has been seeing. During dinner, Eric told Dinah that he was not going to divorce his wife and that he didn ' t want to see her (dinah) anymore. Zack tries to comfort Dinah and ends up professing his own love for her and as he kisses her, she passes out. The next morning, assuming that they made love the night before, Dinah tried to convince Zack to forget the whole thing because it just wouldn ' t work. Trying not to laugh. Zack tells her that nothing happened. Dinah becomes in- censed that he allowed her to make a fool of herself and leaves, swearing never to speak to him again. Back at the office on Monday. Dinah waltzes in with her resignation. Charlotte panicks because Leason is on his way to the office to congratu- late Dinah and Zack on their good work. Sam tries to convince Dinah to stay as she empties her desk and fights with Zack. Leason shows up with a surprise for the staff. His interpretation of Gliter Girl ! Andrea walks in wrapped in Christmas lights and covered with Glitter. All ends well — Leason has his Gliter Girl, ' the comic book ' s reputa- tion is saved and Dinah accepts Zack ' s marriage proposal. 126 cW 100 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE THE ABBEY PLAYERS PRESENT REHEARSAL FOR MURDER A Full-Length Play A HEW COMEDY IN THREE ACTS i rjrn . «iti armu u tab awuu i THE iHPJSI FLAYERS FROUDLY FHESWTj HUSIC BY: ANDREW LT 1YD VERBER LYRICS  Y ' TIK RICE IN A DDITION to these four full length plays, the Players ilso presented two lab productions this year. Lab produc- ons are a relatively new idea for the players. They are torter plays with smaller casts. This year, in December, ley presented Agnes of God, starring Anna Ellison! tanica Costea and Laura Turas as Agnes. The play is ibout a young nun accused of giving birth to and killing a aby . Anna portrayed the psychiatrist assigned to Agnes ' ase and Monica played Mother Miriam Ruth. The second lab was At the Hawk ' s Well, directed by Paddy Hanner. Written by W.B. Yeats, the play combines Japanese Noh drama and Keltic myth to present an in- teresting production. The cast included: Alice Brown as the Guardian of the Well, Chris Ceponis as a young Man, Paddy Hanner as an Old Man and Simon Donoghue, Bili Gareau and Laura Turas as Musicians. The Abbey Players Board is already at work on next season ' s line up. Plays to look for next year include Richard III, Once Upon a Mattress and Goode. ABBEY PLAYERS Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Way, Way back many centuries ago, Not long after the Bible began, The narrator (Roma Dudko) tells the Story of Joseph and his multi- colored coat. I look handsome! I look smart! I am a walking work of art! Joseph (John McDermott) sings about his coat of many colors given to him by his father Jacob. Jacob lived in the land of Cannan; a fine exam- ple of a family man. Jacob (Dr. Gary Brooks, Aca- demic Dean) presents his favorite son Joseph with an elegant coat, causing jealousy among his other sons. Concerned by the dreams Joseph has after getting the coat, the brothers sell him to passing Ishmaelites and tell their father that he has been killed by a goat. Meanwhile, Joseph is sold to Potiphar in Egypt and, charged with misconduct with Potiphar ' s wife, lands in jail. Tell me your dreams. And I will tell you what they show. While in prison, Joseph ' s talent for interpreting dreams comes to the attention of Pharoah, who has been disturbed by crazy dreams. Considered a hero for explaining Pharoah ' s dreams, Joseph becomes Phar- oah ' s number two. (Here, Bryan Sprinkle plays the baker who comes to Joseph with a dream to be analized.) 128 Back in Canaan, the future looked rough! While Joseph is living royally, his brothers have been caught unpre- pared by the famine. In desperation, they decide to go to Egypt, where, thanks to Joseph, the food has been stock- piled and is now Peing rationed out. Upon arrival in Egypt, the Prothers fail to recognize Joseph. Eager to test the honesty of his siPlings, Joseph plants a golden cup in a sack of food given to Benjamin (Sue Digney), the youngest prother. Accused of thievery, Benjamin is thrown in jail. Jacob ' s other sons plea for their brother ' s freedom. Convinced of their honesty, Joseph identifies himself as their brother, whom they assumed was dead. The brothers send word to their father that Joseph is still alive. Over- joyed, JacoP goes to Egypt and is reunited with his favor- ite son! Jacob! Jacob sons, A remarkable family in anyone ' s book! The cast and crew of Joseph: Sue Digney (in front). 1st row: Elmer Charlton (drummer), Simon Donoghue (Director), Joanne Wilson, Laura Turas, Joseph Hack (crew), Trish Strain, Alice Brown, Lisa Christopher, Karen Campbell, Dr. Brooks, Debbie Bethel, Julie Hill, Roma Dudko, Joan Gutshall (assistant to pianist), Paddy Hanner. 2nd Row: Joe Graham, Karen Heidt (crew), Willy Gonda (crew) Cabot Carney, Diane Boyle, Bob Tully, John McDermott, Mike Hodnett, Jeannette Dupay, Moni- ca Costeu, Jim Eddings (pianist). 3rd Row: Larry Simon, John Kuhn, Janet Spinelli, Bryan Sprinkle, James Butler. Rehearsal for Murder Rehearsal for Murder was the Abbey first murder mys- tery in many years. The play is about a playwrite, Alex Dennison, played by Dr. Henery Buckley, who is distraught over what authorities call the suicide of his fiance, Monica Welles, played Py Laura Turas. After a year of seclusion, Alex decides to get some of his and Monica ' s theater friends together to read his newest script. Little do his friends know, that actually Alex is convinced that one of them killed Monica. As the play unfolds, thesbians David Matthews (Arthur Slade), Leo Gibbs (Bob Tully) and Karen Daniels (Trish Strain) Producer Bella Lamb (Monica Costea) and direc- tor Lloyd Andrews (Paddy Hanner) read through scenes which are uncomfortably familiar. Realizing that they are actually reenacting events that led up to Monica ' s death, they become incensed and begin to leave. They are stopped at the door by police Lt. McElroy (John McDer- mottl Convinced to stay because it would be suspicious for them to leave, the group continues to read their scenes, although unnerved by implications. Unseen by the others, David slips off stage to do some quick checking up on Lt. McElroy. When he returns, David announces that the real Lt. McElroy was killed in the line of duty six months ago. The phony McElroy confesses to being Frank Keller an actor hired by Alex. Alex explains that the real police would not cooperate so he hired Frank to intimidate them. Angered by the whole situation, the group decides to leave. Near hysteria, Alex pulls a gun and calls them back. Terrified, the actors obey and again begin reading scenes from Alex ' s play . As they look on wearily, Alex unveils the set for the final scene. To the groups great surprise, Alex has taken Monicas furniture out of storage and arranged it on the stage as it was in Monica ' s apartment the night of her death. As Leo and Karen read thru a scene, Leo panics, cer- tain he has been found out. He emphatically denies Alex ' s accusations and turns to leave. Alex again turns to leave. Alex again draws his gun and fires three shots as the lights go out and general confussion breaks out. As the screams and yells subside, a flashlight beam plays across the stage, pausing a moment on each actors face — including Leo, who is brushing himself off — and finally coming to rest on Alex ' s face. The stage lights come back on, and Frank is seen behind Monica ' s desk with a flashlight in his hand. Realizing the whole afternoon was a set up, Frank crumbles as Alex reveals his theory about Monica ' s death — Frank killed her. Wearily, Frank confesses and tells just what did happen the night of Monica ' s death. Frank explains how he had been black mailing Monica over an affair they had once had. When she refused to make the payoff, Frank began to shake her and she fell to the floor. As she fell she hit her head on the desk. Unable to revive her, Frank panicked and threw her body off the terrace to avoid a murder charge. At this point, Alex calls the real Lt. McElroy (Janet Spinellil to the stage from the rear of the theater to arrest Frank. As Lt. McElroy leads Frank away, the actors break into cheers and pat each other on the Pack for a job well done. The play ends as the group leaves to get coffee at a nearby cafe. Left alone in the theater, Alex picks up a champagne glass from Monica ' s desk and toasts his dead fiance. (Supporting cast for the play included Peter Andrews, Bill Gareau, Joan Gutshall, Mary Schrenker, Darryl Warren and Rita Weisenhorn.) H ■op !00 YEjlRS Jr EXPERIE-JC: THE ABBEY PLAYERS PRESENT r k am. hiti3i xxEJi er kc scvud i 26 - 29 APRIL HAID LITTLE THEATRE BELMONT ABBEY COLLEGE BELMONT, NC Hay Fever The last play of the Abbey Players 100th season was Noel Coward ' s British comedy Hay Fever. The cast of this play was graced with the participation of two faculty members. Dr. Henry Buckley, Chairman of the Modern Foreign Language Department had the role of David Bliss, a novelist busy with the latest work. David is married to Judith Bliss, a retired movie actress and they have two children — son (Paddy Hanner) and daughter Sorrel (Alice Brown). The Blisses exist independent of each other, rarely making known their individual plans. This habit of secretcy is what creates a hilarious play. As Sorrel and Simon chat one morning, Simon mentions that he has invited a lady friend Myra Arundale (Monica Costea) to come down for the weekend. Sorrel is out- raged that Simon didn ' t tell her about Myra because she also invited a guest for the weekend — diplomatist Richard Greathan (Bill Gareau). As they argue, Judith comes in from the garden. Upon inpuiry. she learns of their invitations and is angered. She, too, has invited a guest. Her guest is a young athlete named Sandy Tyrell (Eric Poweel). After more arguing, Judith decides to tell the maid Clara (Jody Johnson) about the house-guests. The resulting uproar brings David downstairs from his study. Angry because all the arguing is preventing him from working on his novel, he calls order to the room and announces that a young lady, Jackie Coryton (Karen Campbell), will be arriving by train to spend the weekend. The guests arrive and each host ushers his or her respec- tive visitor off to a guiet corner. After dinner, the group tries to entertain themselves with a word game. The Blisses ' hot tempers, however end the game with each Bliss pairing off with a different guest. Sorel retreats to the library with Sandy, Simon goes to the garden with Jackie, Judith stays in the livingroom with Richard, and David escapes up- stairs with Myra. Melodramatic as they are, each Bliss insists that he or she has fallen in love with his or her new partner. Thoroughly taken aback and exausted, the guests wearily retire for the night. The next morning, the guests hastily eat break- fast and decide to slip out Pefore the Blisses wake. The Blisses wake and gather at the breakfast table to listen to David ' s new novel. Peace does not last long, however, as they break into an argument over the name of a street in the novel. As the shouting peaks, the guests are seen sneaking out the door, which they slam behind them. Startled by the sound, the Blisses fall silent as Sorel runs to see what has happened. Upon discovering that their guests have left, the family merely shrugs their shoul- ders and continue to eat. Judith ends the play by an- nouncing she is returning to the stage! 131 Capt. Shelds.
