This was no small task; Orientation ' 80 greeted the largest Freshman class that the Abbey has ever seen. This endeavor was surely a credit to the admissions staff, but the true feat which was achieved was by the residence life staff. These new students were not only faced with the typical plight of all incoming Fresh- men classes preceding them, but because of limited on campus housing some rooms were tripled. Also, Belmont Abbey being once an all male school saw the male to female ratio reach one to one proportions for the first time in the history of the college. The whole orientation program did not consist of just eight days but was the culmi- nation of months of planning. Three days prior to the Freshmen arrival last minute preparations were being made by the entire orientation staff. The scheduled arrival of Freshmen on Au- gust 20 between noon and five ran relatively smoothly with Abbot Walter conducting a slide presentation for the early arrivals and their families. As students said their good- byes and began settling in, the assimilation process into the Abbey community turned into full swing. Thursday, the second day of orientation was an important one, which began with a battery of tests to assist each advisor in the placement of their advisees. That afternoon the orientation program proceeded to the gym for a program designed as a vehicle by which individuals could discern value clarifi- cations and communicate them to their peers. Friday began the formal academic orien- tation with the assembly of faculty, adminis- trators, and students in the Abbey Cathe- dral. The Freshmen were then divided into f Up BELMONT ABBEY COLLEGE Roman Catholic. Liberal arts coeducational col lege. Founded. 1876, by Order of St. Benedict. One mile north. if ■Mm WmmM groups of approximately twenty, and ac- companied by one professor and one up- perclassman in order to give the Freshmen an idea of what academe at the Abbey is like from contrasting perspectives. After lunch the Freshmen then went to their respective advisors to become acquainted and deter- mine from the placement tests what classes each student would need in preparation for registration the next day. Bingo in the Haiti was the highlight of the evening activities being sponsored by the College Union. Freshmen registration brought about the finale of the academic orientation and once the students had signed up for their classes and purchased their books the afternoon was left free. A bus tour of Charlotte stop- ping at South Park Mall was organized to show students the proximity of Charlotte. Sunday came as a long awaited solace for both the Freshmen and orientation staff with Mass and an afternoon excursion to Carowinds Amusement Park. On Monday during the final arrival of Up- perclassmen and subsequent registration, the Freshmen were whisked away for a pic- nic at Camp Steer, which featured a sun filled afternoon of swimming, canoeing, fris- bee throwing, and friend making. The next day was to hold the long awaited reason for the months of planning and anticipation, the beginning of classes. 5 m H w timtuv x-  nvs, .FT ■MJk ftQ — -SBSft r — 246 s The Very Reverend Fr. Neil W. Tobin has served as President of Belmont Abbey College since June 1, 1978. As of May 31, 1981, Fr. Tobin will resume his pastoral life in his home diocese of Dubuque, Iowa. During his presidency at B.A.C., Fr. Tobin has helped to upgrade many facets of the college com- munity; with such changes as a face lift to St. Leo ' s and the new theater in the Haid . Furthermore, enrollment has increased steadily in the past two years adding to the solvency of the college. The renovation of second floor of the administration building was begun during Father Tobin ' s adminis- tration in order to aid in making the learning atmo- sphere more comfortable for both students and faculty. All of these facts can be concluded as the product of a successful administration. When Fr. Tobin leaves the college community his departure will be felt by all. The community wishes him well and the best of luck in his new responsibil- ities. Fr. Neil W. Tobin Reverend John Bradley is the Provost of Belmont Abbey College. B elmont, North Carolina. He was appointed to that position in June 1978 after serving as President of the school for eight years. Fr. Bradley was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1919 and ordained a priest in 1944. Two years later he was awarded a seven-year scholarship. He spent the first four years of the scholarship at Oxford University and the fifth at Glasgow University. Fr. Bradley used the funds from the last two years of the scholarship to come to America where he was assigned to be an assistant to the late Archbishop Fulton Sheen. At Sheen ' s request, Fr. Bradley went to teach philosophy at Belmont for one year. But he agreed to affiliate permanently with the school and became the acting head of their Department of Philosophy. After three years at Belmont, Fr. Bradley went to Montreal, Canada to supervise the editing of a French edition of the Bible. The project was a joint operation with Grolier Publishing Co., New York and Good Will Publishers, and from then on he has been editor-in-chief of Good Will Publishers. From the time of his leaving Belmont in 1955 until his return in 1970, he wrote and edited some twenty books, the latest being The International Dictionary of Thoughts and the ten-volume Catholic Layman ' s library. Fr. Bradley has degrees in philosophy and theology as part of his seminary background. In addition, he received a B.A. and M.A. from Oxford University and a Diploma of Education from Glas- gow University. The Reverend )ohn P. Bradley is now Chairman of the Board of Good Will Publishing Company. The Abbey community wants to thank the Reverend lohn Bradley for his years of dedicated service and wish him much success in his new leader- ship responsibilities. Fr. John P. Belmont Abbey College Union The Belmont Abbey-Sacred Heart College Union, more affectionately known as BASH , was founded In 1968. The two schools were small, and the need for mutual socializing was apparent. As the years pro- gressed, student populations grew, and the in- dividual campus needs changed with the times. Early in September 1980, internal ten- sions began to rise within the partnership. Di- vorce soon became the only recourse. On October 1, 1980, the Belmont Abbey Col- lege Union ( BACU, baa koo) was born. And it was a magnificent birth. Its president, Jim Briscese, was faced with quite a challenge — he had to build a strong campus organization, keeping the activities moving smoothly, being responsible for his administrative duties, an- swering the communitle ' s questions, while re- maining a nice guy. Most people would say he did It all rather well. The fall semester brought folks like Janet Koenigsamen, Laura Perrucci, Rae Mlllner, Judy Probst, and Jack Martin, under the di- rection of Sally Baynton, who all were instru- mental in programming a series of events which filled the weeks with a blanket concert by PLUM HOLLOW, a Casino Night, a jazz concert with PROJECTIONS, author-lecturer Jeremy Rifkin, rollerskating, bowling and a series of ten first-run movies ... to name a few. Fall weekend ' s theme Oktoberfest, 68 presented the autumn months with a German flavor, a Saurkraut band . . . Grand Father Mountain Cloggers, and the semiformal. Ka- ren Van Sickle worked long and hard, slept in on Sunday after the weekend, and then started plans for the spring semester ' s big weekends on Monday. The Christmas Dance presented a fine finale of the fall semester with a visit from Santa (alias Gene Nutter) and his elves, and a hope for a traditional tree planting by the union. As first semester has its dramatic changes, second semester would follow suit. Tim Law- son and Joe Albertson were elected to the gov- erning board for the Co-Curricular and Re- creation Committees. In January, BACU was fortunate to coordinate Fred Storaska ' s pre- sentation on HOW TO SAY NO TO A RAPIST AND SURVIVE, a blanket concert, Michael Brown ' s lecture on toxic waste, co-sponsored the production of MASH, Winter Weekend . . . a traditional Spring Weekend, blanket con- certs, bingo, we could go on . . . and it did . . . Come the end of February, elections were held. After tense campaigning between four friends, Janet Kocnigsamen would be the next Presi- dent, and Karen Van Sickle the Vice Presi- dent. A potentially tragic year ended in on a good note, and with the energy to begin the plans for 1981-88. 69 70 im CAMPUS MINISTRY — B.A.C.U. I will admit there are many disappointments that go into the publi- cation of a book but when the final proofs arrive the satisfac- tion is more than a material achievement. I realize that this is not the ideal publication but it reflects the interests and pur- suits of many. A yearbook is not of primary importance after Graduation or at year ' s end but five years later. It is a collection of memories, including the tears, excitement, and joy all of which are remembered by the glimpse of a familiar place and its respective faces which make it almost real. This is in part my feeble attempt to give of myself to Belmont Abbey. I hope this tradition is carried further and I hope others will continue to express themselves even in the event it may be un popular. It is the few who dare to be different and the few who are open minded enough to listen that makes a yearbook a reality. 77 Abbey Players Congratulations are In order for the Ab- bey Players who, under the direction of Si- mon Donoghue, took a dynamic plunge to the forefront with this past year ' s produc- tions. The casts of Godspell, Hadrian VII, Mash, and Shadowbox all de- serve recognition. Each performance was a feat of organization and production both on and off the stage. 1 W 4 AdJ h mb I 4 r 1 mSi ft d ' . ■■■V i ■78 -CJ 79 1 1 _ 1 80 81 THE PHOENIX CLUB The former TKE ' s are so called due to a temporary loss of their chapter, which they hope to regain in the near future. The loss was caused by a slow enrollment into the organization and a lag in funds in the past years. However the tides have turned as the group proved this past year. The brothers and the little sisters (who are the former group of the Order of Diana ). United to temporarily form the Phoenix Club. With an increase in membership, of four girls and twelve guys, the group put in an industrious year. Their goals are to regain their chapter and acquire a new house for their organization. Through everything from a paper drive to bagel sales, they watched their bank account grow. The group ' s activities were not only limited to pur- suing their own Interests but; in following their an- nual tradition they spent All Saint ' s Day hosting a Halloween party for the retarded children at Holy Angels Nursery. Other community services include, staging and participating in a basketball game with the Mary Nelson Center children, working with the Charlotte Jaycees loading and unloading donations to Goodwill Industries, and participating in the spe- cial Olympics sponsored by the college. The Organization ' s persistence and spirit will surely guide them to achieve their goals. 82 i Members: Alex Arce Vito Barone Patrick Bisese Rebecca Breen Angela Florschutz Paul Heretick Alan Jones James Miller Eileen Moody Suzanne Rea Antoinette Resye Paul Stamoulis Antonio Suarez Barbara Zappone William Kelly Geoffrey Tierncy Kelly Fitzpatrick Karen Martin Daniel Broderson Judith Dever New Members: Richard Bctres Susan Cassio Thomas Charla Nicholas Chupko Michael Cioffi Charles Connolly Brenda Cox Peter Doyle Mark Erickson Robert Fowler Jeannine Hagemann JoEllen Hough James McAllister Walter Oates, Jr. Scott Philipp Peter Robinson 83 PI KAPPA THETA: Front Row: Jeanette Delorenzo, Karen Ryal, Jack Warmingham, Kevin Cherry, Peter Braun, Mary Ann Dreps, Cami Raimo, Julie Schuvart, Ann Bier, Chuck McFadden, Dan Boehling. 2nd Row: Diego Garcia, John Crowley, William Smith, Mary Alice Mahan, Dan Silling, Robert Toomey, Catherine O ' Connell, Kevin Cotter, John McLoughlin, Bro. Unlike most college volleyball teams the Abbey played well with no scholarship players at all. Attendance at the teams ' try-outs early in the year was very impressive. Twenty-five girls were on the team when only twelve are really needed to play. This should show good spirit and good potential for the future. The team played under the superb leadership of Coach Sharon Ratchford and the team ' s only two seniors and captains, Brenda Lucas and Geralynn Slough. Captains Slough and Lucas commented that, the team was a well rounded team with no super-stars. With a num- ber of freshmen, returning starters, and great team spirit, the team shows promise and potential for many excellent seasons ahead. This year ' s team was, for the most part, a very young team. It consisted of eighteen freshmen, two sophomores and three ju- niors. This was Coach Jack Mur- phy ' s second year at the Abbey. He stated that this year ' s team was probably the youngest for a school this size in the entire country. The soccer team came a long way since last season, which was the poorest in Abbey Soccer his- tory. The team placed second in their district behind High Point College. They made it to the play-offs and were defeated in a heartbreaker, 3-2, by Atlantic Christian College in the first round. According to Coach Murphy, the Abbey ' s toughest games were against UNC-Chapel Hill, v 98 Top L-R; Teri Dennehy, Andy Ostrom, Jack Willis, Richard Einwechter, David Eichenger, Peter Doyle, Cory Carver, Mike Lenahan, Ike Podlesney, Jim Kirby, Coach Jack Murphy. All American Grant Cuthill was the Abbey ' s starting goal keeper and averaged 10 saves a game. Coach Murphy also com- mented that Team spirit was high this year, and that good, productive practices, were a major asset in the team ' s suc- cess. 4 J 100 _. 101 ■■RUGGERS! The Belmont Abbey College tennis team ended their 1981 season with a fifth-place finish among the 32 teams competing in the NAIA District 26 Tennis Tourna- ment. Ending the regular season schedule with an impressive record of 15-7, Coach Mike Reidy recorded another winning campaign. In Reidy ' s 12 years with Belmont Ab- bey College, the tennis program has taken root and grown into one of the perennial powers of NAIA Dis- trict 26 competition. Going into the district tourna- ment, the Crusaders ' second seed in individual competition, Roger Mar- tin, claimed a team leading singles record of 17-5. Next in line was fifth- seeded freshman Andy McCaw with . . - . . A=J • a 15-6 record. Top-seeded junior Kevin Burke followed with an in- dividual record of 14-8, as sixth- seed sophomore Mike Sijon trailed closely with a singles mark of 13-9. Fourth-seeded senior Andy Doris recorded an individual mark of 12- 9, while third-seeded junior Scott Davis held an 11-11 record. In NAIA District 26 tournament competition, all of the Crusaders advanced past the opening rounds to earn the team their fifth place finish. First and second seeds Kevin Burke and Roger Martin reached the semi-finals in doubles competition, an area of play in which the Abbey has been successful all season. The Crusaders won 34 of 57 doubles matches in regular season play. As a final congratulatory note, both Burke and Martin were named to the NAIA District 26 All-Tennis Team. Roger Dills L. For with former Coach Bobby Hussey ' s deci- sion to accept the head coaching position at David- son College, one cannot help but feel that the 1980- 81 basketball season marks the end of an extraordinary period of success for Belmont Abbey College basketball. This season the Crusaders compiled a final record of 24-7. making 1980-81 the fourth consecutive season in which the team has won 20 or more games they posted a regular season record of 22-6 and earned the third-seed position among the six teams participating in the NAIA District 26 Play-offs in the Winston-Salem Coliseum. However, the Abbey ' s season was no cakewalk, and the team ' s road to the district tournament was a rough one. At the outset of the 1980-81 season, the Crusaders emerged quite disheartened from the WBTV Carolina Classic (a tournament which they won last year) after a one-point loss in the semi-final round of play to Winthrop College, the team which eventually won the tournament. At that point In the Coach Jim Baker, Coach Hollowell, John Magierowski John Picinich, Darryl Lewis, Donald Hutchinson, Jim Reeves, David Kershaw, Coach Bob Hussey, Bottom L-R; Ti- migo Burnett, Dempsey Cohen, Frank Johnson, Greg Howard, Stan Parker Frank Pickett. 108 .11 J season the Crusaders held a record of 5-3. Nothing to write home about. Likewise, at the mid-point of the season, the Cru- saders held a record of 9-5 and were fresh off of a sound thrashing at the hands of the Falcons of Pfeiffer College. No surprise! After the unprec- edented 29-5 season of 1979-80. this eason was to be a rebuilding year and a 9-5 record was present- able — nothing to be ashamed of. However, it was at this point of the 1980-81 season that the Crusaders ran off (in a rather modest fash- Ion) 13 straight victories before losing their final game of the regular season to Lenoir-Rhyne College. In fact, the Crusaders won 16 of their last 18 games of the season to post that 22-6 record, which earned the squad that third seed in the NAIA District 26 Play-offs. In the opening round of the NAIA District 26 Tour- nament, the Abbey undefeated Pembroke State Uni- versity by a score of 65-56 to advance to the second round of play. The following night the Crusaders bumped tournament favorite J.C. Smith from com- petition by a score of 68-66. Thus the stage was set for the final confrontation: Belmont Abbey vs. Gard- ner-Webb in the finals of the NAIA District 26 Tour- nament. It seemed only fitting that these two peren- nial powers should endure slow starts at the outset of the season and make their way to the finals for a showdown. The Crusaders, playing with a visable tightness in their game, fell behind in the early going of the contest and trailed at the half by a score of 44-35. Likewise, the second half saw Gardner-Webb stretch their lead to 11 points with the score at 69-58 with 10 minutes remaining on the clock. AM appreared to be lost for the Abbey. ME. Almost magically the Crusaders were back in the contest. For with 0:16 remaining in the game, the Abbey had the ball and was down by only one point with the score at 82-81. A missed Crusader shot went out of bounds off of a Gardner-Webb man. Again the Abbey had a chance. The ball was inbounded with 0:09 left on the clock to Crusader Greg Howard. Howard was unintentionally fouled by Bulldog Norris Bell with 0:04 remaining in the game. This foul put Howard at the free throw line with a one-and-one situation. Following two Gardner-Webb time-outs, Howard, standing at the free throw line with the Abbey down by one, took the ball, performed his ritualistic three- dribble period of concentration, raised the ball to eye level and shot. As the Abbey ' s hopes gained alti- tude and peaked in harmony with the trajectory of the ball, likewise those hopes vanished as the ball hit the back of the rim and took a high bounce before coming to rest in the hands of Gardner-Webb ' s Frank Streater. The final score was 82-81. The Abbey ' s sea- son was over. Along with Hussey, seniors David Kershaw, Frank Pickett, and Stan Parker will be lost from next sea- son ' s team. Kershaw culminated his college career, as the Wel- ford, S.C., native scored 2049 career points. He was named to the NAIA District 26 All-Tournament Team, and was also voted as a third-team member of the 1980-81 NAIA Basketball All-American Team. Roger Dills 115 LADY CRUSADERS The Lady Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College, after the squad ' s premiere in AIAW action, have completed the 1980-81 basketball season, and Coach Tony Baldwin ' s charming smile glows from the reflection of the past season. Baldwin, a former assistant with the women ' s bas- ketball program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, came to the Abbey late in the recruit- ing season last year. Despite this fact, Baldwin man- aged an impressive recruiting sweep amid the scramble of late season panic recruiting to establish a women ' s program at the Abbey. For his efforts Baldwin received six solid players, all fresh out of high school. Nonetheless, these six freshmen jelled into a solid team as the season progressed and pro- duced a winning season with a final record of 12-10. With a regular season record of 12-9, the Lady Crusaders had achieved the goal of a winning sea- son, and, consequently, had the chance to partici- pate in the AIAW State Play-offs held in Hickory, N.C., on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne College. In first-round tourney action, the Lady Crusaders were pitted against the women ' s squad from Camp- bell University, a team which had defeated the Ab- bey 88-67 during the regular season. The Lady Cru- saders played a superb first half and took a 33-30 lead to the locker room. However, cold shooting and foul trouble plagued the women in the second half of play, and Campbell went on to win the contest by the score of 82-70, thus ending the Lady Crusaders ' first season. The squad has increased in numbers; half of which are Fresh- women . This increased student in- volvement follows the trend of suc- cesses in the Abbey ' s sport pro- gram. The addition of women ' s basketball and the new vitality in the Abbey Soccer program offer further avenues which the cheer- leaders may pursue. The Ab- bey ' s intramural pro- gram is one of many means of recreation. The program is extensive, with opportunities for participation in badmin- ton, tennis, water-polo, flag football, Softball, basketball, and cross country. The teams are open to all interested students and are com- prised of teams from dif- ferent dorms and frater- nities as well as individ- uals on their own depending on the sport. The Crusaders currently hold a record of 0-3 with only two matches remaining on their schedule prior to the playing of the Abbey Classic. The Abbey Classic, a twelve-team event, will be played at Gallagher Trails, the Crusaders ' home golf course which has been completely ren- ovated for the 1981 season. The Crusaders will end the 1981 golf season on the road as the Abbey will face Lenoir-Rhyne College, a team which registered one of their defeats early this season. The Crusaders ' other losses this season have been at the hands of Wingate College and Catawba College. Hussey has resigned as men ' s head basketball coach and athletic director at Belmont Abbey College to assume head coaching duties at nearby Davidson College. The announcement came on March 19, only weeks after Hussey had led his Crusader basketball team to the finals of the NAIA Dis- trict 26 Basketball Tournament for the second consecutive year. My tenure at Belmont Abbey Col- lege has been a fruitful experience that I believe has made me a much better person, said Hussey. But Da- vidson College has given me an op- portunity to fulfill a goal which I set for myself many years ago — be- coming a head basketball coach at the NCAA Division I level. Hussey ' s ten-year record at the Abbey is 178-115, including 96-31 the past four years with records of 21-9, 22-10, 29-5 and 24-7 consecu- tively. He was a coach at nearby Kings Mountain High School from 1962 to 1970, serving as head coach the fi- nal four years and guiding the Mountaineers to a 67-7 record. He was a graduate assistant at Appala- chian State University in 1970-71 and coached the freshman team to a 16-6 record. Charged with the task of finding a replacement for Hussey was Harry Creemers, vice president for institu- tional advancement. Creemers, in conjunction with the advisory com- mittee selected from among 90 ap- plicants Edward G. Payne, former assistant basketball coach at East Carolina. Hussey, 41, is of course quite pleased with the five-year contract he has just signed with Davidson College. However, he said, there is always a little hesitation when you leave behind a successful program you have built and established. Belmont Abbey College has been the motivating element of my coaching career for the past ten years. I ' ve given it my all, and it ' s given me much enjoyment, satisfac- tion and, now, this new opportunity. I see this opportunity at Davidson as a new challenge for me, and I owe it to myself to go on to the NCAA Divi- sion I level of play and test the metal I ' m made of as a coach on that level of competition. My biggest regret is leaving Bel- mont Abbey, Hussey continued. I ' d like to give a big tribute to the College because the people here are the ones who gave me the opportu- nity to be a college coach. The priests here are some of the greatest people in the world. Speaker at the 3 p.m. ceremo- ny was Dr. James Ralph Scales, president of Wake Forest Uni- versity. Scales charged the 1981 graduates to respond cheerful- ly to the desperate challenges of survival, and, racing against the clock of history, . . . make all the nightmares of destruction un- true. After reviewing the warnings of a number of gloomy prophets, Scales said, The events fore- told by these prophecies will not happen if educated men and women find their voices, as well as their typewriters and com- puters and machine tools, and go to work to prevent the material- ization of all the fears aroused by the world ' s condition. Thank you, Sincerely Stanley Barone Jr. 158 1 Thomas Greg Wyatt April 9, 1960 — November 23, 1980 Thomas Gregory Wyatt was better known as Greg by his friends. It is very hard to describe in words his personality. Greg was very special to those who loved him and he in return treated his friends very special. Greg loved sports, especially rugby, and he was also involved with Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. The Wyatts were kind enough to let the fraternity use their lakehouse on Lake Wiley, S.C. for consolidation weekend 1980. Greg showed his peers some of his skills in sailing and waterskiing and, subsequently a good time was had by all. On November 23, 1980 Greg ' s short lived life came to an end in a tragedy which affected not only his family but also his fra- ternity brothers and sisters, fellow rugby players and his close friends. Greg ' s presence is still felt today by those who loved ™ who he loved - H ' S sense of humor, athletic ability, gentleness, and kindness will be savored in memories of him- most of all Greg will be missed for his personality. It ' s hard to say where our life will lead us So, we should make the best of the moments we have Our friend Greg is gone from us in body, but his spirit remains. He is happy now and that is the strength we must survive on. Greg will never be forgotten by his loved ones. But, instead we will carry on as if he were still here with us. We love you Greg as you have loved us. We will keep you close in our hearts and never forget your smiling eyes. 159 A Child ' s Song I don ' t want to be that wild again I don ' t want to be that helpless child, but I found that which makes me vulnerable offers the window to my soul. 1 make my vulnerabilities my strengths when my wreckfessness nature ceases To love another just like me gives me the strength which 1 need. He showed us how our weaknesses make us strong if only we know him. We have all heard it before, it never ceases to be told once more. To love others just like me gives me the strength which 1 need.
