He can pick cotton faster than any buck alive! Look at his muscles bulge! Show em your teeth boy! An auction of human chattle was part of the proper business of Caldwell plantation in those dark days of South- ern history. Another part of the busi- ness of the plantation was the mining of gold. Two shafts sunk on the 500 acres of Caldwell yielded the precious metal valued greater than the human souls auctioned from the giant mill stone. Following the Civil War the plantation was sold to the Reverend Jeremiah O ' Connell, a missionary priest. He pre- sented the land to the Benedictine monks of Saint Vincent ' s Archabbey, Latrobe, Pennsylvania. They agreed, according to the wishes of Father O ' Connell, to found a community and school on the land. April 21, 1876, the Reverend Herman Wolfe, O.S.B. arrived at the small train station in Garibaldi, North Carolina to take possession of the property. A com- pany of ten monks, many of them originally from Germany, soon joined Father Herman. These eleven men took rich red clay from the earth and molded and fired it into stout bricks. With these bricks they set about building the mon- astery and school. In October, 1876 the school opened with four students. In 1878 the school was enlarged under the name of St. Mary ' s college. November 9, 1884, the new monastery became Mary-Help-of- Christians Abbey. The new Abbot, the Right Reverend Leo Haid, O.S.B., later arranged for Garabaldi, the small town near the Abbey, to be renamed Belmont, after a New York State senator. In 1913, the college was renamed Bel- mont Abbey College. In 1952, it became a 4-year liberal arts senior college. Until that time the enrollment was never over 200. Under the leadership of Abbot Walter Coggin, O.S.B., the college undertook a large building program. The expansion program was initiated 1960, and since that time six major buildings have been completed. Today, in the foyer of the Abbey Cathedral rests the large mill stone which at one time served as the auction block for slaves sold on the plantation. It is now a baptismal font, an instrument of liberation. The years continue to grow into each other as the Benedictine monks continue their 1,400-year-old tradition in the roll- ing hills in the piedmont of Western North Carolina. IN MEMORIAM ISABELLE ELLIS HART Mrs. Isabelle Ellis Hart, former Chairman of the Business and Economics Department, died in September, 1973. She was a popular, much respected, and admired instructor. Her lectures were often filled with many informative, helpful, and interesting references, examples, and insights from her own professional career. The knowledge and understanding she shared with her students was the kind they could not obtain from any textbook. Mrs. Hart received a B.A. from Vassar College in 1929 and an M.A. from Duke University in 1957. In 1961 she joined the faculty of Belmont Abbey College. An informed and concerned individual, Mrs. Hart was active in both academic and civic affairs. She served as first vice president of the Charlotte chapter of The American Association of University Women and was an officer of the Charlotte Altrusa Club for Women Executives. Mrs. Hart was also Chairman of the Council of Women ' s Civic Organiza- tions in Charlotte and was twice president of the Charlotte Business and Professional Women ' s Club. A member of Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Gamma Mu honor societies, she had been listed in Who ' s Who in American Women since 1967. In 1971 Mrs. Hart was chosen to appear in Outstanding Educators of America for 1971. Her citation read: in recognition for contributing to the advancement of higher education and service to the community. Mrs. Hart was a dedicated woman who cared a great deal about Belmont Abbey College. She was a devoted teacher who showed interest and concern for her students. IN MEMORIAM JOSEPH ANTHONY MATHEWS Dr. Joseph Anthony Mathews, former Chairman of the Science Division and professor of chemistry, died in October, 1973. He was regarded as the Father of Science at Belmont Abbey College. Doc Mathews, as he was often called, was extremely skilled and versatile. He was a diversified scientist with broad talent in chemistry. At one time or another he had taught every chemistry course offered at the Abbey. Dr. Mathews received a B.A. from Regis College, an M.S. from the College of the Holy Cross, and a Ph. D. from Georgetown University. In 1956 he became an instructor at Belmont Abbey College. A dedicated and generous man, he worked to strengthen all of the science department. He urged the construction of the Gaston Science Building and was a major contributor to its design. From visits to other colleges he gathered ideas on how it could be best built. Dr. Mathews also put many, of his non-academic talents to use in helping the Abbey. As a glass blower he made a good deal of the equipment used in the science department. He was skilled with his hands and had a memory for technical detail. Most of Dr. Mathews students, in whom he placed a great deal of trust, thought of him with affection. His method of teaching was low level, informal, and very effective. In 1973, one year after his retirement, Dr. Mathews was made Professor Emeritus as an expression of the College ' s deep gratitude to him for his many .years of exemplary service. H ' - In November, 1973 Officer Lee Perkins died. He was a man respected by everyone. As a security guard for Belmont Abbey he worked not only to enforce the law, but also to help the students. Their well-bing and safetv were important to him. Many times he went out of his way to aid them. He believed that his job involved more than maintaining order. Lee Perkins was an integral part of the Belmont Abbev College communitv. He worked with the students, was concerned about them, and tried to encourage harmony and cooperation among evervone. It was not enough for him to be a representative of law and order. He tried to help people in as ma nv ways as he could. In 1973 Officer Perkins and his family took over the snack bar, which was about to be closed. Thev welcomed evervone. It became a gathering place where students could socialize and enjov themselves. Before coming to the Abbev Officer Perkins had been a Wells Fargo guard and a con- stable. He was appointed a special deputv for Gaston County and then became a security guard. It was in this position that he came to Belmont Abbey to work with Officer LeRov Howard. Officer Perkins cared a good deal about people. He was always willing to help, even if all he could do was offer a few kind words of advice. r .- i LIFE JL2 A S hingg reat was e 3IIIIIH without enthusiasm. — Emerson the lover rooted stays. A veteran team, headed by co-captains Brian Murphy and Alex Kozak, combined with good young talent brought visions of a possible national championship. The hard work and the dedication exhibited by the team showed through in their fine record of 12-3-2. The only regular season losses were to perennial power North Carolina and to Appalachian St., with ties being settled for at Davidson and St. An- drews. Flashy offense and solid de- fense led the Crusaders throughout the season. Seniors John Keaton and Walter Achumba steadied the defense, with senior Brian Murphy in goal. The offense was sparked by the awe- some trio of Paul Zambito, Bill Soussi and Randy Schamback. The offensive potency of the Crusader attack was evident very early as the Abbey boot- ers mauled Greensboro College at home early in the season 17-1. Soccer is the only fall sport at the Abbey and the team spends many weeks in preparation for the season. The whole Belmont Abbey communi- ty should be proud of the team and the publicity their fine season gave to the abbey. This feat was accomplished this year with an undefeated record in district play. For this reason the Abbey was the host school for the district tour- nament and given the role of favorites. The Crusaders lived up to expecta- tions, taking very close games from Pfeiffer and Guilford. These wins qualified the Abbey booters for a spot in the regional NAIA tournament, the last step on the road to St. Louis and a national championship. The first opponent in the regional playoff, held at Lynchburg Va., was Berry Col- lege. The Abbey defeated Berry 1- on a goal by Bill Soussi and ad- vanced to the regional finals against Erskine. No one expected the kind of game they saw that day. Erskine ended the Abbey ' s bid for a cham- pionship 2-1 in a five overtime game — the longest in collegiate soccer his- tory. Even though Erskine advanced to the finals, the Belmont Abbey com- munity can be proud of the soccer team, which was one breath behind one of the eight best teams in the NAIA. Leading the list was sophomore Bill Soussi from Beng- hazi, Libya. Bill was the second lead- ing scorer in the nation in the inter- collegiate Soccer Football Association with 32 goals for the season. Bill was also honored, along with his brother Mousadak and Eddie Mancheno, by being selected for the 1973 All-South Team. This selection is a big honor and is given to deserving players. For the seventh consecutive year, Coach Stan Dudko has led his team to the District 26 championships. The team placed second in the NAIA regionals. Coach Dudko himself was selected District 26 Soccer Coach of the Year for the seventh straight year, having posted a seven year record of 82-33-12. one hundred twenty-four (TOP LEFT) Coach Dudko and his staff watch the action from the side- lines (FAR LEFT) Bill Soussi in a famous position (TOP) Coach Dudko congratulates All South Team members, Eddie Mancheno, Bill and Mousadak Soussi (LEFT) Bill Soussi charges on offense while brother Mousadak sets on defense (ABOVE) Eddie Mancheno starts a play with a perfect pass. one hundred twenl -five ' 73-74 CRUSADER BASKETBALL PROGRAM ONE OF PROMISE The outlook for Crusader basketball in 73- 74 was very optimistic, but as the season turned out, inconsistent was the word. Re- bounding from a 17-11 season last year, the Crusaders looked awesome in pre-season scrimmages. Facing perhaps the toughest sche- dule ever, with the addition of NCAA teams like St. Bonaventure and Gannon, NAIA na- tional champs Guilford, along with preseason nationally ranked regulars such as Gardner- Webb and Elon, the Crusaders were after some much needed recognition and regional publicity. As the season progressed very few games were predictable. To offset brilliant efforts against Guilford, Elon and Western Carolina at home, sloppy games were played at the foes ' home court. A poorly played game at Pembroke St. marked a turning point in mid- season, sending the Crusaders on a 10-3 burst. Numerous two and three game losing streaks have levelled the record to a respect- able 17-12. A bumper crop of freshmen recruited last year allowed the Abbey to field, for the first time ever, a junior varsity team Playing an abbreviated schedule of area JV teams and junior colleges, the team, made up mostly of freshmen, posted a 6-1 record, including a tournament title in its first two games. 73-74 Crusader cage squad (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT) Mike Randall, Ricky McClure, Mike Thombs, Stan Kennedy, Gary Silver, Clint Bryant, Curtis Carter, Greg Latin, Carl Bell, Mike Bona, James Monroe, Craig Wink, Craig Leach, Carl Kennedy, Julian Miller, Steve Delaney, Forrest Sims. ne hundred twentv-six AS CAGERS FACE TOUGHEST SCHEDULE EVER; END 17-12 (TOP LEFT) Guard Julian Miller rebounds with Western Carolina defender (TOP) Coach Hussey talks its over during time out (AOBVE) Freshman Clint Bryant skies for rebound (RICHTl Curtis Carter drives for layup through Elon defense. one hundred twentv-se t: HIGHLIGHT OF BASKETBALL SEASON COMES IN TRIP TO NEW flBHHHP one hundred twenty-eight YORK STATE TO PLAY BONNIES, GANNON AND BUFFALO STATE The 73-74 season was marked by game scheduling, as the first New York trip was arranged in the years since Coach Bob Hussey has been at the helm of the Abbey Crusaders. A fantastic five day trip was set up in which the Crusaders were to meet NCAA small school power St. Bon- aventure, then on to play Buffalo State. Finally, the Abbey travelled to Erie, Pa. to play the Lancers of Gan- non College. This was to be the sixth meeting of the Crusaders and the Bonnies of St. Bonaventures headed this vear by Coach Jim Satalin. The big threat was 6T1 center Glenn Price who was averaging points this season. As de- fense by Curtis Carter and help- side defense by Mike Bona held Price to only fourteen points, another for- ward took up the slack for the Bon- nies. Freshman Essie Hollis pump- ed in fifteen jump shots, mostly from around the top of the key to total thirty points and lead the foes to an 81 to 70 victory. Carl Bell and Curtis Carter had 27 and 20 points respec- tively to lead Abbev scoring. A day of rest was planned between the games with Bonaventure and Buf- falo St. The squad travelled from Olean to Buffalo, N.Y. After everyone had settled into their rooms, the team was off for an afternoon in Canada to view the marvelous sights of Nia- gara Falls. The relaxing afternoon did the Cru- saders good as they played the Buffalo St. Bengals in a tight game which was played in overtime when John Dougherty tied the score for the Ben- gals with two free throws with 1:11 remaining in regular time. When the Abbey outscored Buffalo 8 to 4 in the overtime, they won the game 71-67. Carl Bell and Curtis Carter led the Abbey with 18 and 17 points respectively while freshman Clint Bryant and junior guard, Garv Silver added 12 apiece. John Dougherty led the Bengals with 23. Next day, the Abbey squad travel- led to Erie, Pa. to meet Gannon Col- lege. Except for one time when the Lancers led 50-49, the Crusaders own- ed the lead. Then with two seconds remaining, forward Dave Stoczynski put in a shot which forced the Abbey into its second overtime game in two nights. He also led Lancer scoring in that five minute spread of overtime with four of their five points. But the Abbey put in seven points, five by Carl Bell and the mighty Lancers had been dealt their first loss at home this season by a score of 64-62. Carl Bell led the last Crusade up North with 28 points and Gerald Walker had 20 for Gannon. The Abbey re- turnd to Belmont with a satisfying two victories out of three games. The people behind the scenes, though, are just as important. Obviously, coaches play a pivotal role in a basketball program. Under third year coach Bob Hussey and assistant coach Mike Reidy, the Crusader basketball program has come a long way. The fine job done by these two and a new addition to the program, Lee Ded- mon, especially in the areas of recruiting and scouting has been evident throughout the year. Much money is required to run a basket- ball program as extensive as the Abbey ' s, and much credit must be given to Mr. Jim Thompson, President of the Abbey Booster Club. Athletic secretary Mrs. Joy McKenzie is also an invaluable asset to the entire sports program. The job of manager is many times not very glamorous, but nonetheless important. John Kusiak, a senior and head trainer for soccer as well as basketball has been an un- selfish contributor to Abbey athletics for four years. Head manager was junior Kevin Mc- Gowam. Mark Farley and John Diehl, score- keeper and statistician, kept records all year long. This year saw another new face at the Abbey. Mike Purkey, a Gastonia native, re- turned to the area from Chapel Hill and took over the voluminous job of Sports Informa- tion Director. Finally, a word of thanks should be extended to the cheerleaders, who spent many hours in service to the Belmont Abbey Athletic program. The jun- ior forward from Reidsville, North Carolina, jumped into first place on total points scored in one season with 587. Carl also became number two on the Abbey all-time career scoring list with 1609 points, trailing Roger Marcil who accumulted 1813 points. The Abbey was also led by sopho- more pivot Curtis Carter, Curtis led the team in rebounds and was second leading scorer with 15 points a game. Gary Silver, with his tenacious de- fense, and Julian Miller with his quick hands, made a guard pair that was hard to beat. Transfer Mike Bona usually played as the fifth starter. Sophomore Steve Delaney started many times at guard to make kev assists, and freshman Clint Bryant sub- bed often at forward and burned the nets in several clutch instances. The outlook for the 74-75 season looks better combined with a tougher schedule. This year ' s complete team is returning and Coach Hussey has planned for the toughest schedule that Abbey cagers have ever dreamed of. To open the season, an eight team District 26 tournament is planned including such teams as Elon, Gard- ner-Webb, Lenoir Rhyne and Barber Scotia. Later a trip to New York by way of Washington D.C. is planned where the Crusaders will play teams such as Catholic University and Seton Hall. With these plans in the making, Coaches Hussey and Reidy are search- ing desperately for a big man. The Abbey was the districts best defen- sive team, but the offense proved shallow. Therefore if a big man can be found to pull down offensive re- bounds, then next season looks very bright. one hundred thirty-two (TOP LEFT) Basketball is a non-contact sport, right (FAR LEFT) Mike Bona up for tip, but it ' s too late (LEFT) shot taken by Curtis Carter astounds Elon ' s Elbert Outlaw (TOP MIDDLE) Co-captains for the year, Curtis Carter and Carl Bell with Coach Hussey (TOP RIGHT) the fast hands of Julian Miller go after opponent (ABOVE) front line action in Western Carolina game, as Clint Bryant finger rolls from the post. one hundred thirty-three YOUNG TENNIS TE AM PROVIDES HOPE FOR FUTURE The young and inexperienced ten- nis team was a big surprise in 1974. Having only three returners from last year ' s squad, the team proved to be surprisingly strong with the addition of talented freshmen and transfers. Pat Gribbon, last year ' s MVP, Gary Silver and Kevin McGowan anchored the team as the only veterans. Support also came from junior college transfer Craig Sharpe from Brevard and Bill Soussi, a talented transplant from the soccer field. Freshmen who greatly helped the team were Paul Harrell, Dervin Bradford and Billy Real. Lisa Dorman, a coed and a sign of the times at the Abbey, also provided great depth to this year ' s team. A tough schedule faced the Abbey netters this year including always strong J.C. Smith, UNC-C, Wofford, and Central Michigan University. Under the direction of Coach Mike Reidy, and with the possibility of new clay courts for the Abbey, the tennis team should have a great future in the overall scheme of Abbey athletics. • .. Even though it is not necessary to be in the best possible physical shape to play golf, it is a demanding game of skill, coordination and mental alertness. Golf, like tennis, is not a team sport. It is an individual sport, putting much pressure on each member of the team. This year ' s Abbey golf team, under the tutellage of Father Pop Martin, combined a nucleus of veteran competitors with a bundle of fresh voung talent. Seniors Mike Meyers, Jim Lober and Dennis Inguigiato provided stead leadership. Bill Smith, Dick Harlovve and newcomers Frank McGlynn and Joe Trincheria rounded out the squad. Coming off an impressive 17-8 record last year, the team faces much more competition this year with the likes of powerful Erskine, UNCC and Gardner-Webb standing in the way. Lack of interest is probably the only thing in the way of golf becoming a big sport at the Abbe} . one hundred thirty-seven The intramural program at the Abbey has always been of major importance. It provides a competitive recreational outlet for most every stu- dent on campus. Competition in foot- ball, basketball, tennis, ping-pong, paddleball and a myriad of other sports gives everyone the chance to show off their abilities. The annual Beany Bowl between the freshmen and sophomores ended with a hard-earned win for the frosh. MVP Chris Farley anchored the fresh- men on defense. The regular football season brought the championship again to perennial power, Sigma Phi Epsilon. Basketball is one of the most spirited competitions of the year. A League champs, SPE had to defeat a very tough Phi Kap team in the semi-finals in order to take the crown. After going undefeated the whole season, the strong Junior B team was upset by the Senior B team in the finals. C league went to a very physical Day Hop team. Under the direction of Marty Moran, John Monaco and Donny Hatchett, along with Coach Mike Reidv, the intramural department was very busy coordinating many activi- ties, large and small. Coed participa- tion in the program has resulted in football games at Sacred Heart and basketball games with Sacred Heart, Central Piedmont and other area in- stitutions. Many previously all-male events were opened to the coeds. These in- cluded ping-pong, tennis and vollev- ball. Female participation has been slow, but should pick up in years to come, as coeds become a more ac- customed sight on campus. Much discussion circulated this year about the impartiality of the in- tramural system. Some said it favor- ed the fraternities at the expense of the independents. Trying to finish schedules and to keep everyone happy is a very tough job. Officiating sport- ing events is very difficult, too. The intramural staff and everyone who has helped this past year have done an adequate job under adverse condi- tions. one hundred fort -one STUDENT GOVERNMENT BACK: LEFT TO RIGHT: Frank Gray, joe Coffey. What fruit do you eat? said he to the boy. Truth, father, the boy replied; I find it good. The father looked at his son. Go, he commanded. Place this Truth in the light of the Sun; let it dry under its heat. The boy obeyed in wonder. His question must be answered — so he asked his pensive father. Why must I put Truth under the hot sun? Son, taste the fruit, the dried fruit of what truth you would ingest. If after the sun has dried it to essentials, you cannot eat of it, then beware that truth, for its juices seduced you into something less than the Truth itself. one hundred sixty-five one hundred sixty-six one hundred sixty-eight one hundred sixty-nine irui 1AMES I BEHRMANN ANN!
