Tragedy appeals to the more noble aspects of man ' s nature (thirst for blood, morbid fascina- tion with death, etc.) Yet true tragedy con- tains the redeeming quality of the catharsis — the purging of the viewers pity and fear. And the fact that tragedy exposes univer- sal flaws gives the view- er a ready excuse for his own actions.
