THE 1962 editor: dezmond waters assistant editor: andrew laiewski y  , Dedication We have chosen to dedicate the SPIRE of 1962 to a priest, educator, administrator, counsellor, and friend. As a priest, he has impressed all who know him with a calmness that we realize can come only from a living faith and trust in God. As an educator, he has taught many of us math, engineer- ing, and mechanical drawing. As an administrator, he has served the college for many years as Aca- demic Dean and Registrar, respectively; he was also largely responsible for the s u c c es s f ul and speedy completion of O ' Connell Hall. As a coun- sellor, he has helped us to prepare our courses of study and has given us confidence in our abilities. And as a friend, he has shown a sincere interest in the general welfare of the entire student body. As a token of our deep appreciation of Father Jude Cleary, O.S.B., let this SPIRE stand as an ex- pression of our hope for his continued health, hap- piness, and a long life in service to Belmont Abbey College. Father Jude saying the Conventual Mass. Under the Oak I am the Oak. Of old, God ' s Hand hath set me Standing here. Much have I seen, Heard many a tale unfold Around my stem. In clash of arms A nation ' s Youth went by, The trot of horses, the tramp of men in Blue and Grey, Crossed the Catawba and marched by night this way From Mount Holly and on to Richmond Hill, Where some creid: Victory, some lay still. In Peace beneath my arms. When King ' s Mountain was sunset stained with red. And lovers came to make their tryst, perchance to wed And, all unknowing, their secrets shared Unthinking that an old oak kenned or cared. Then came the Cross To establish Pax. Though prisoned with the walls of Piedmont clay, I shot aloft to catch the light of day; Growing in their midst with new stability, I gave them arbor and quiet tranquility. Then came the monks. And with them I came to know their chants and hymns, The strange chatter below my limbs; The tolling of the sac ring bell, Or solemn stroke of the passing knell. Listener was I, When far below me, Leo, Belmont ' s first Abbot, spoke Like England ' s Austin ' neath Kentish oak Faith ' s needs to his little band. Spoke with accents of a foreign land. Watched I often ! As the compound changed. A Cathedral sprung from a chapel-shed, A new wing wooed from the red earth-bed; Sons of Subiaco, Cassino, and Fountains, Builders of Benedict in Piedmont ' s Mountains. I am the Oak. Of old, God ' s Hand hath set me A witness of a tale half-told; I too must take my rest, grow old. My shadow, no longer from the sun, A mark in verse of a tale begun. A mark in verse of a tale begun. Bertrand A. Pattison Oblate of St. Benedict T m tcr xt- l( l And thus our year began students arrived singly and in groups, all headed for anew year, new friends, and new studies. Still full of summer vigor, still free from worries of tests and teachers, they came from many states and several foreign countries, all prom pted by a cornmon goal -- knowledge. A well organized orientation pro- gram provided the incoming fresh- men with a brief but comprehensive view of their coming college career. Later, the ine vit abl e lines were formed in order to determine room assignments, class schedules and general college regulations. Within the space of a few brief but trying days order was established and The Abbey began as a functioning unit. Fiore arrives at school after pleasant trip iron New York. A renewal of our quest for Knowledge A group o£ freshman horticulturists ply their trade in the gardens of Holy Angels . Made another A For some September marked the beginning of a new experience; for others, it was the continuation of a past or past years; and for the seniors, it began the final lap in the longpuU for a successfully com- pleted college education. New classes, new subjects, and new studies opened the door to a w i d e r knowledge and under- standing of the world. This was not designed to be easily achieved, but promised long hours of classes and still longer hours of private study and research. The Library is the heart of any college and so through its doors began a stream of students that was not to slacken until the closing of school in June. Frank and Bernie plotting madness ! Mike Cunningham actually studies ! Friends through victory and failure. With the opening day came the renewal of old friendships formed during the previous year at B.A.C. Summer vacations, jobs, and even studies had split old groups and spread them throughout many states. This was the time to discover all the latest concerning some friend ' s summer adventures and es- capades and perhaps relate afew of our own. Does it really matter if we exaggerate a little or embellish each story slightly? The important thing is -- the old gang is back ' together and new friends are coming in. A rekindling of friendships old . . . Should auld acquaintance be forgot. 13 J ' Yakety-Yak Thus began a new life with many people and places and customs to which one must become ac- customed. The seniors found themselves lodged in motels and a traUer for the first semester. A new super-highway was rapidly being bunt nearby. Paul ' s had expanded and nearby colleges were bursting with new faces eager to be met. It was a new climate forout-of-staters and a new accent had to be learn- ed and, for some, acquired. Much was strange, but all was friendly and soon each fitted into a new scheme that promised rich rewards and very few were disappointed. A rough life in a motel ! Put her in gear ! H Cuba, si! Yanqui no! ' A life with new fads and new faces Love is a many splendored thing And after the fifth tank rolled over me. You ' ll enjoy your vacation at Paris Island. And thus our year ended Time speeded us swiftly to graduation. Too swiftly ! It had taken our youth and made us men, it had taken our ignorance and given us knowledge, and it had bound us forever to the search for Truth. As we took our diplomas into hand and marched away, we felt secure because we knewthat our years at Abbey had given us the virtue, the knowledge, and the philosophy to meet and successfully resolve any challenge which the future might offer. The Processional. Governor Terry Sanford addressing the graduating class Father John conferring an honorary degree on Mr. Franli McGuire. Rev. John Oetgen (center-seated) conferred Honorary Degrees upon Governor Terry Sanford, Msgr. Alfred Horrigan (seated), Edward Gallagher, and Frank McGuire (standing). Rev. James G. Huggin, D.D. speaks to Class Day Exercises Father John confers a diploma. FOREWORD I stand here, a lasting record of the academic year 1961 — 1962. I am the final chapter for the Class of ' 62. Yet for others I am only the first of four chapters. Within these pages you can feel my heartbeat and pulse. Look carefully, for I do here record the birth of college men. Watch closely as you turn each page while I note their growth and their battle for light. Join with them as they march ahead on the road of life; partake of their sorrows and tears, their smiles and plea- sures. If you wish, you may dance with them at their formals or pray with them on the Lord ' s Day or study and work with them in their labors for a degree. Turn just one more page and you will watch them as each receives his badge of achievement, a diploma representing four years of study. This is my purpose, my only chore. I cannot help them in their struggles nor comfort them in their pain. All this they must do alone. I am a recorder of deeds and a folio of pictorial proof. In later years I shall be their memory and recall to them their dreams. I am a holder of their youth and a monument to their stamina and fortitude. I am all this, and I have watched well. I am the SPIRE OF 1962. I TABLE OF CONTENTS Idministration 20 tudent Body 38 «r %f ' S ' -, ;:- A« - ' V ' ;-_ .r  f.V ' «:- -i.- -j ' W - ' ADMINISTRA TION ivsJ - The Right Reverend Abbot Walter A. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Four Years! What is four years? To an army private, it ' s forever. To a recluse a lifetime. To a college freshman, it ' s an eternity. To a sophomore, the end is still a long way off. A junior looks expectantly forward, the end is in sight. To a college senior - it ' s too, too short! During our four ' too short ' years what have we done? We have watched each other mature from a clumsy teen-ager into confident, responsible adults. Our class has sponsored four dances. More than our share of basketball, soccer and baseball contests and trophys have been won through our efforts. Friendships have budded and grown, though some few have fallen by the wayside. IVIost, however, have remained fruitful and true. Which was our most memorable year? Was it our freshman year when the cows still wandered freely over the campus? Or was it the sophomore year when the snows fell to close the school. Per- haps, it was the junior year when we returned from Easter vacation to find the novitiate in flames. Those three years were good years, but surely the best is the fourth year when proudly we mount the stage to receive our hard won diplomas - emblems of accomplishment, and badges of honor, keys to a better life. Four years of work, of play, of sun and rain are past - four years packed with new experiences, yet four years so short as to seem like four months. CHARLES ALEXANDER ADCOCK Charlotte, N. C. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS The Junior Class of Belmont Abbey College of 61 and ' 62 has proved itself one of the finest junior classes in Abbey history. Under the able direction of Bill Cunningham, President; Edward Johnson, Vice-Pres- ident; Patrick O ' Leary, Treasurer; James Caltagirone, Secretary; and Hank Underhill and Don Miller as Boarder and Day-hop Representative respectively, the Junior Class has shown a spirit of unity that is a credit to the class and the college. They sponsored a square dance, an Abbey first. The dance was well received and proved to be a rousing success. Later in the year they sponsored the eagerly awaited Spring Formal. This was the climax of a week-end full of pleasure and excitement. Unity and originality have been their keynotes and service to the college their aim. Their intent is to become the best Senior Class ever in the following year, and if this year is any indication of what they can do, their goal of best will not be hard to reach. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS i The Sophomore work schedule actually began in June of last year. Guided by the diligent efforts of their officers during the summer vacation, they were able to initiate the academic year with one of the most successful Freshman Orientation Programs ever produced. Climaxing this program was the un- forgettable dance at which the Jets were introduced to the Crusader Campus. Although not as successful as last year ' s class, the Sophomores were ably represented in the intra- mural program. The outstanding achievement was the Christmas Formal sponsored in co-operation with the Student Government. Through the splendid efforts of all committees headed by Gerard Zoby, this dance was one of the most splendid in several years. Special thanks are due to Joe Lucas for the decorating and Bob Heretick for the publicity. With the change from the old dorms to the new finally realized this year, so also came the compar- able transition from the sophomoric wise-fool to mature, responsible juniors. A fruitful future is ob- viously in the offing because success is as great as the effort and effort has been characteristic of the Sophomore Class. Thomas Adkins Belmont, N. C. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS This year the Abbey witnessed the largest Freshman enrollment in its entire history. Having been enthusiastically welcomed by the upper classmen, the freshmen realized early in the year the warmth and friendship that exists on the Abbey campus. These high spirited and eager young men started their firstyear of college life with an orientation period that was filled with information concerning the school ' s history, the college curriculum and the facts of life on a college campus. Then followed a short but spirited campaign for class officers which culminated in the election of Douglas Wetmore as President; Harvey Gregory as Vice-President; Tim Ford, Secretary; Alexander Markow, Treasurer; William Falck, Boarder Representative; and Thomas Dunn as Day- Hop Represent- ative. Intramural football in the Autumn proved the power of the freshmen when they captured second place with the White team captained by Robert Azar and George Tydings, while their Red team, captained by Tom O ' Neil, took a strong third. As the year progressed, Freshman Class President Doug Wetmore was heard to say, I sure hope that the future will bring as much success and good fortune as this year has brought. I—T Unselfish drive and determination on the part of the rising senior class made the Spring Formal a marvelous success. The Four Lads and the Swlngin ' Nine Minus Three provided the music for the white- jacketed Abbeymen and their lovely ladies. Viewed from the balcony, the dance floor provided a breathtaking array of color. Whirling gowns of pastels and whites blended with the tempo of the music to produce a maze of sensations. It was a delightful evening and, to say the least, both BUI Cunningham, president of the junior class, and the mem- bers of the Student Government deserve our thanks for a successful Spring Formal. THE DEAN ' S CHRISTMAS DINNER Abbey students arriving for the Christmas Buffet given by Fr. Eugene. The annual Christ- mas Dinner presented t o t h e Student Body by the Dean of Stu- dents was a tremen- dous success. Fr. Eugene went to con- siderable trouble to have an excellent buf- fet prepared with everything from fresh fruits through a wide variety of meats to a lush strawberry cake. After the meal, the Chanticleer ' s put song into the air with several Christmas carols, and their song proved to be the crux of a v e r y enjoyable evening. Harvey puts a table together with sheer genius ! Everyone feasted lavishly for a night. Abbeymen and their dates enjoying themselves Fr. Eugene ' s chorus spirited the evening with Christmas carols. CHRISTMAS FORMAL I could have danced all night. This year the Sophomore Class, under the commend- able leadership of Class President Gerry Zoby, presented one of the most enjoyable Christmas formals ever to be presented to the Student Body of Belmont Abbey. The Formal was held at the Veteran ' s Club in Charlotte and the music was provided by Baxter Potts and his orches- tra. The program of at- tractions grew considerably in size and sta- ture. Throughout the wide gamut of Chamber Mu- sic to Drama to Mime, the high quality of the performances on our campus never flagged. The Lenox String Quartet opened the season on Oc- tober 18 with a brilliant program that included superb performances of qu art ets by Mozart, Beethoven, and Kirchner. The Kirchner, new to most of us, excited the most comments and the greatest enthusiasm. John Starrs as Richard m. 4 Carol Keefe as Titania and Jay Ehrlicher as Oberon in Mid-summer Night ' s Dream. 4 In March, Players Incorporated ' s heroic in- terpretation of Richard III and its fanciful and tender staging of Midsummer Night ' s Dream stirred us to new heights of admiration both for this remarkable troupe and for the incomparable genius of Shakespeare. In the same month the poignant illusion, delicate humor, wit and beauty of Franz Reynders, a talented interpreter of mime, opened new vistas of an ancient and intrigu- ing art. Leatare Sunday, AprU 1, was an espe- cially joyful oc c as ion; on that day William Brice presented awell-chosen and expertly played program of organ music in the Abbey Cathedral. Thunderous applause for Gary Tow- len, a youthful 19-year-old pianist, brought the season to a close on May 1. To stimulate our intellectual growth a wide variety of lecturers address ed Belmont Abbey audiences. Top honor went to Dr. William Ro- berts, Associate Professor of International Law andRelationsatthe Catholic University of Amer- ica, who was chosen to present the annual Abbot Vincent lectures. In early Janu ary hommage was paid to s c i e n c e by the appearance of Dr. I. M. Levitt of the Fels Planetarium, Philadel- phia, who presented a slide-lecture entitled A Trip to the Moon. Especially worthy of note is the visit of Mr. Mrs. E. Martin Browne who spoke on The Plays of T. S. Eliot, and Medi- eval Mystery Plays. Dr. John Mahoney, Pro- fessor of English at the University of Detroit, returned to our campus this year. He spoke on Prokope: Redemption in the Greek Fathers. Susan Walker as Lady Anne in Richard m. CONTA CT CONTACT, the monthly student publication of Belmont Abbey College, is now iii its 39th year of circulation. The name Contact was chosen for what the word implies ... a reaching out to and contacting of students and friends of the Abbey; a means of greater unification for all those associated with the school. The newspaper is operated and run by the students of the college under the liberal guidance of a faculty mem- ber whose purpose is not to provide censorship, but rat her to give experienced advice. Mr. John McCaffrey, Sponsor. page editors AGORA Approximately one year ago, a small group of artistic -minded individuals banded together for the purpose ofproducing a literary rnagazine which would be truly Abbey . After lengthly delibera- tion, those members involved finally chose AGORA as the name under which their imaginative efforts would be grouped. The word itself means a meet- ing place, but more specifically, it refers to that magazine which binds under one cover the best poems, essays, and short stories written by Abbey students during the year. Because of the fact that writers and staff members represent nearly all courses of study offered at the Abbey, the publi- cation is an agora in the true sense of word, a meeting of the minds where interests are varied. The highlight of AGORA is its emphasis on student participation. This is a direct result of the periodical ' s original purpose to foster a school-wide surge of literary interest and the levelof taste, along with its eventual development by means of actual works of art. jimfi L TO R: (standing) DonHatton, Frank Bernat, Brian Ternamian, Bob Favarato, Tom Branch, (sitting) Brian Herbert, Jim Caltigirone, Bob Siebert, Mrs. Jean Moore. The fondest memories of college days always include the songs and serenadings of the singing groups on the campus. Wishing to be a part of these memories and to revive the pride the Abbey had had in her glee clubs of the past, a new singing group, the Chanticleers, has made its beginning on our campus and has impressed all with its deter- mination to be what the name Chanticleer is intended to convey in this context - one who sings with bril- liance. Presently under the direction of Father Eugene, the twenty-five young pioneers made their debut as Chanticleers in a Christmas concert, and again appeared in the Abbey Revue. Success is attending the effort put forth by all involved in the undertaking and the future of these ' chanters ' looks ' cleer ' indeed. The Baritones. wies M,C. INTER-FRA TERNITY COMMISSION The Inter- Fraternity Commission of Belmont Abbey College has been duly established through the action of the Student Government. The object of this organization is to promote and perpetuate the best interests of Belmont Abbey College and the fraternities associated with the college and to insure co- operation among the fraternities and between them and college authorities. Membership consists of two members from each fraternity and one faculty member appointed by the Dean of Students. It is within the jurisdiction of this commission to make regulations concerning rushing, pledging and initiation procedures, and to impose suitable sanctions to insure their observance. This year the I.F.C. was increased by two members. mm DELTA EPSILON SIGMA Benjamin Albert Cornelius. Fr. Lawrence Roger Willis. From its orgin, the local TEKE Chapter has maintained an honorable position of leadership in scholarship, in sports, in all extracurricular activities, and in service to the college and the com- munity as well as in size and strength. Dr. George Herndl is the Chapter Ad- viser, but all programs are initiated and carried out by the fraters, who cherish independence of thought and insist on bearing full responsibility for their undertakings. With the loss of four starters, a mediocre team was in sight. This image was soon destroyed when the Abbey won its first six games, including the Wingfoot Tournament, before loosing to na- tionally ranked St. Bonaventure. In the course of the sea- son, the team presented Coach McGuire with his one hun- dreth win since coming to Belmont five years ago. Cap- tain Jim Lytle provided the play- making and settling qua- lity necessary to all winning teams. High-scoring Joe McDermott and big Bill Ficke gave the Abbey strength off the backboards. Consistent scorers in double figures, Bernie Brennan and Joe Butts also proved themselves capable backcourt men. Coach McGuire had a good man in Hank Steinke for additional rebounding and scoring. The Crusaders received a bid to the N.A.I.A. District 26 Regional finals after competing for four years in N.C. A.A. post-season tournaments. A trip to Kansas City would be a fitting reward to an aggressive Abbey team. With Joe leaping, guess who got possession? Bernie beats his man. The boys, nineteen of them returning lettermen, began practice soon after returning from summer vacation. Coach Crunkleton and the players spent many an afternoon practicing and preparing for their season, which included N.C. State, and the Universities of North and South Carolina. Their victory over State was the high point of the season and spurred them on to a double overtime tie with Pfeiffer after an earlier loss to them. The proximity of Abbey ' s scores with those of her opponents is an indication of the ability and coordination developed by the team. As proof of their fine play, invitations have been received from Duke University and Lynchburg College to play them next fall.
