11 THE 1961 pire PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF BELMONT ABBEY COLLEGE BELMONT, NORTH CAROLINA h- f V myself also am a mortal man, like all others, and of the race of him, that was first made of the earth, and in the womb of my mother I was fash- ioned to be flesh. In the time of ten months I was compacted in blood, of the seed of man, and the pleasure of sleep concurring. And being born I drew in the common air, and fell upon the earth, that is made alike, and the first voice which I uttered was crying, as all others do. I was nursed in swaddling clothes, and with great cares. For none of the kings had any other beginning of birth. For all men have one entrance into life, and the like going out. Wherefore I wished, and under- standing was given me; and I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came upon me. And I preferred her before kingdoms and thrones, and esteemed riches nothing in compari- son of her. Neither did I compare unto her any precious stone, for all gold in comparison of her, is as a little sand, and silver in respect to her shall be counted as clay. I loved her above health and beauty, and chose to have her instead of light, for her light cannot be put out. Now all good things came to me together with her, and innumerable riches through her hands, and I rejoiced in all these ; for this wisdom went before me, and I knew not that she was the mother of them all. Which I have learned with- . } .1 •ntJAiMimiMMirwm sjf!n Pi- ' ' jj. ' ' fvif rrv, -w - ' out guile, and communicate without env ' y, and her riches I hide not. For she is an infinite treasure to men, which they that use, become the friends of God, being commended for the gift of discipline. And God hath given to me to speak as I would, and to conceive thoughts worthy of those things that are given me, because he is the guide of wisdom, and the director of the wise. For in his hand are both we, and our words, and all wisdom, and the knowledge and skill of works. For he hath given me the true knowl- edge of the things that we are : to know the disposition of the whole world, and the virtues of the elements, the beginning, and ending, and midst of the times, and alterations of their courses, and the changes of seasons, the revolutions of the year, and the dispositions of the stars, the natures of living creatures, and rage of wild beasts, the force of winds, and reasonings of men, the diversities of plants, and the virtues of roots, and all such things as are hid and not forseen, I have learned, for wisdom, which is t h e worker of all things, taught me. The Book of Wisdom ■n TO KNOW THE DISPOSITION In the years that are to come, you, Abbey men of 1961, will open this book with fond remembrance of those many days of happiness and hard work when you studied and lived and played under the inspi- ration and leadership of the Benedictine Monks. Led by the very able and wonderful Right Reverend Abbot Walter A. Coggin, these dedicated men have molded you and shaped you and your way of life. Even until the day you pass from this world, their influence will have a marked influence upon you and all that you do. Under the Crusader banner you have lived and, we know, have learned to be men- -men in whom honor stands above all else. Loyalty and inner strength, kindness and compassion, love of God and fellowman--all these attributes and many more have been instilled in you, to be passed on in turn to your children; they shall stand as monuments to your achievements as a student at Belmont Abbey College. You are truly Abbeymen . OF THE WHOLE WORLD = ' , p 1 i y l ■p ' V J - mJ A rare moment of concentration? According to my slide rule . . . AND THE VIRTUES OF THE ELEMENTS i H HI Hi In his courses, the student studies the primary elements, air, earth, fire, and water. He does so in order that he may understand the chemistry of the universe, the machinations of the heavens, the mutability of the seasons, the po- tency of the sun, and the impreg- nability of the seas. miL ' i mimfimiA jpvrwTTioPTvgnwnvT w 5fie Beginning T N . The beginning of every school year brings new joys and sorrows, people and places, classes and clubs. We renew old acquaintances, break bread with new ones, and develop lasting friendships. Some of us are, at first, lost in this commencing of college; some of us are old hands well adjusted to the scheme of things; and some of us return for the last time. The talkathon is on! We have raised the flag in glory to our country and our God. We have marched be- hind these priestly monks into blessed benediction and marched again into our sol- emn convocation. In this solemn ceremony, we view our friends, parents, fa- culty, and cl as s m ates. To these people we are indebted; for they have helped to make us men, full grown in the wis- dom of knowledge and under- standing and in the love of God and fellow man. We take, in hand, our diploma, thanking God for all these people, who have made us persevere unto the end. . . .we view our friends, parents, faculty, and class- mates. We, the members of the Spire Staff, have set this page aside in appreciation to Fr. Ignatius, who contributed greatly to the in- itial stage of development of this annual. We are deeply indebted to him for his in- valuable ideas, guidance and assistance. We were indeed sad that he had to leave us for other duties at Catholic University; but, regardless this book still bears many designs which were his. wBummnmmm AFPREtl4TI0. TO FATHER KEWETH CEVER, 0. S. B. This page has been set aside, in appre- ciation to a priest without whose assistance this annual probably would not be. We, the Spire Staff, wish to thank our sponsor, Fr. Ke nneth, for all his stern determination and invaluable assistance. When things would get a little rough, and we would get a little lax; it was always Father Kenneth, who would say, Well, I don ' t care if this book comes out now or next year ; and who would then sit down and begin work- ing on the book, himself. Mr. David Gorney. Teacher, registrar advisor. Many times moderator of Spire. Died Jan. 3, 1961. REQUIESCAT IN PACE Dr. Thomas Dooley. Doctor, humanitarian, friend. Honorary alumnus of Belmont Abbey College. Doctor honoris causa conferred June, 1958. To a man whose sense of humor brightens our days, whose repartee, at times, dismays us, we pay tribute. For the past four years we have viewed his tall, lanky figure shambling down the halls of B.A.C. He has become a part of us and he is looked upon with respect. STUDOT As government is the creation of people aris- ing from their needs, so too the Student Government is the product and instrument of the students, acting on their behalf as legislator, judge, repre- sentative, voice and link with the college admini- stration. By means of a new constitution, the Student Government has managed to accomplish new programs and re-establish old ones. Among these accomplishments are: a new constitution devised by the students with the aid of faculty consultation; the organization of an orientation program; the establishment of the Judiciary Board; the establishment and operation of a student sponsored film series; and the re -establishment of Belmont Abbey College in the United States National Student Association. This organization, composed of students and faculty who are interested in literature and the creative arts, meets at in- tervals of from two to three weeks. Members select by vote certain novels, plays, or pieces of poetry to be read, analysed, and discussed at the following meeting. A group leader , usually the person who first suggested the chosen work, prepares an informal address to help guide the discussion. Belmont Abbey College Service Club is the organization which renders as- sistance in all athletic contests and college events, such as home basketball games, the bulk of all its work. Of equal importance is the help given by those who act as ushers for certain special events. The aims of this organization are to show good will and understanding to visitors to the Abbey and to afford an opportunity for self -improvement, experience and preparation for successful living. Originally, freshmen were excluded from membership, but since they have demonstrated great interest in BACSC, membership has been extended to them. The rewards of the Service Club are great. Those who fulfill the required number of working hours are entitled to receive a varsity letter (a varsity numeral for freshman) and to attend the annual athletic banquet held at the end of the year. D[PAItTM[NT Belmont Abbey has risen to high glories in the past decade not merely through good fortune but under the capable guidance of a stable athleUc department. It has managed to combine the wisdom that comes with age and experience with the well- directed and energetic aspirations of youth. Mr. Wheeler, who previously had led the Abbey to football fame in the Junior College division, is always ready with the needed facts and figures. Firey Al McGuire has the unique talent of being able to spot youthful ability to pack his powerhouse five. Mr. Mc- Guire has succeeded in giving the Abbey the intangibles that are necessary for a winning basketball schedule. The latest addition to the staff, coach Crunkleton, has managed to become a friend to the student body. The great amount of spirit shown in the intramural program is due mainly to his organizing and scheduling a complete program. For this we all are very grateful. Father Bertrand, Soccer Coach. The Abbey ' s nine, this year, will be proof of the addage Experience is the best teacher. This year ' s team will have veterans in seven positions. The new coach, Ted Crunkleton, ' should add immensely to the fight of the team. The schedule includes several early games which will make or break the season. Mr. Crunkleton has gained the confidence of the play- ers, by displaying a complete knowledge of the game, which can ' t help but show in those close games. 9 Sa m %- Sad Sam Lange Abbey ' s own Yogi The City of Richmond has produced two stalwart pitchers who should put the Abbey back on the winning way. Bobby Ayers, a right hander, possesses the poise necessary for a winning pitcher. Augie Lange proved he had what it takes last year by starting all but three of the Abbey tilts. Any time these two winning machines might falter, BiUKeUy, a Brooklyn boy with one year ' s experience, is the coach ' s answer. Bill might be seen anywhere on the field, but he specializes in short pitching stints known as game -saving. Bp5 . The members are a very earnest group who are content to remain unseen, though not unheard, for they make their appearance on the rifle range amidst the austere confines of the Administration Building ' s fourth floor. The team is coached by Sergeant Roy Costner of the local police force who seeks to instill in the group a better understanding and handUng of firearms. The Very Reverend John A, Oetgen, O.S.B., President And Alterations Oj Gfieir Courses, Belmont Abbe College Belmont, North Carolina A Message from the President The pages of this book are already drenched in nostalgia. Autumn scenes from this very year light one along a hundred paths of mennones. And as the years pass, those memories will grow not less dim but, by becoming increasingly symbolic of your youth, will glow with a special splendor. The Spire of ' 61 will, however, fail in its purpose if it serves only to stir up a yearning for past days. Part of the inten- tion of the editors has been to provide a concrete reminder of those ideals under which you have studied, ideals which should character- ize your actions in all the years lying before you. Armed with the principles taught you at the Abbey, you can ill afford to be feeble venturers in so wide a world as you now enter. The burden and the privilege of making a beneficial contribution to Life is inescap- ably yours. It is our hope that Spire will assist you from time to time to see in its pages . . .golden days, fruitful of golden deeds, With joy and love triumphing, and lair Truth. SENIOR OFFICERS The academic year off icially opened when President Jack Doyle raised the Stars and Stripes to new glory in a very impressive ceremony held on the newly completed senior patio. Some were happy to once again reunite with old friends; others were not so happy since the ceremony for them symbolized the commencement of a new year of hard work. With the assistance of Jim Sparrow as interior decorator, the Senior Dance, held in the Gallagher Memorial Lounge, was a pleasant success. Music was furnished by Dixie ' s own Benny Goodman, Bob Warden. Publicity was handled by Joe O ' Neil. The seniors sponsored and lead a cavalcade of cars to Furman University for the opening game of the basketball season. Furmanfans were delighted with Sunshine Doyle ' s pre-game antics; they were not so delighted as they watched Goliath Von Bargen and Carl Leffler clear the boards of rebounds. Jim The Whip Mullen, operating like aWall Street executive kept the club together with his sensational play-making.
