FOREWORD An Abbey student at the end of his college career is apt, we find, to feel differently about the purpose of his education than he did when he began. After four years at Belmont Abbey College we have come to realize that genuine education aims to perfect the man, and not just to produce the lawyer or teacher or accountant. To be concerned with fundamental questions, to know and comprehend what is intrinsically im- portant, to acquire the habit of truth, to perfect the faculties which make us men — these are some of the ideals which the Abbey has given us the opportunity to serve. Learning how to make a living and how to do one ' s work skilfully and dependably — these are important, and we have seen their importance reflected in the Abbey ' s training of its students. Learning how to enjoy life and how properly to appreciate its best pleasures, how to make and keep and enjoy friends and how to get along in society — these are also important, and in the pages which follow, there is proof that the Abbey does full justice to its students in all these things. Philosophy and math and accounting courses, student publica- tions, clubs, teams, games, dances, plays, picnics, meetings, and broadcasts, and all the community life of the college all these we count as education. Through all of them, we hove benefited over the years from each other and from the char- acter and traditions of the Abbey. Nor do we anticipate an end to the process of learning and growth when we leave this campus. We hope that from the dedicated men of our faculty, from each other, and from the whole experience of college life, we have acquired some of the habits of learning and grow- ing, and will be able to take them with us into whatever we do. We who will leave Belmont Abbey College in June of 1959 look back with satisfaction and with gratitude upon the life of the campus which we have tried to mirror in these pages.
