HELP MOLD THE MEN AT ra - 1 1 Belmont Abbey ■ FOREWORD An Abbey student at the end of his college career is apt, we find, to feel differently about the purpose of his education than he did when he began. After four years at Belmont Abbey College we have come to realize that genuine education aims to perfect the man, and not just to produce the lawyer or teacher or accountant. To be concerned with fundamental questions, to know and comprehend what is intrinsically im- portant, to acquire the habit of truth, to perfect the faculties which make us men — these are some of the ideals which the Abbey has given us the opportunity to serve. Learning how to make a living and how to do one ' s work skilfully and dependably — these are important, and we have seen their importance reflected in the Abbey ' s training of its students. Learning how to enjoy life and how properly to appreciate its best pleasures, how to make and keep and enjoy friends and how to get along in society — these are also important, and in the pages which follow, there is proof that the Abbey does full justice to its students in all these things. Philosophy and math and accounting courses, student publica- tions, clubs, teams, games, dances, plays, picnics, meetings, and broadcasts, and all the community life of the college all these we count as education. Through all of them, we hove benefited over the years from each other and from the char- acter and traditions of the Abbey. Nor do we anticipate an end to the process of learning and growth when we leave this campus. We hope that from the dedicated men of our faculty, from each other, and from the whole experience of college life, we have acquired some of the habits of learning and grow- ing, and will be able to take them with us into whatever we do. We who will leave Belmont Abbey College in June of 1959 look back with satisfaction and with gratitude upon the life of the campus which we have tried to mirror in these pages. 1 1 CONTENTS Page Administration 16 Classes 28 Activities 76 Sports 122 Advertisements 160 n ...-■; Nl i 1 1 We would like to recognize here a contribution to the life of Belmont Abbey which we consider especial- ly valuable. Occasionally, one finds an administrator whose use of his power gives guidance and inspira- tion to those around him — a man whose personal authority rests on integrity and devotion to principle, and whose firmness can not be resented, because it is impartial and demands no more of others than of itself. Such a man does whatever is right and reason- able, without concern over whether it will make him personally liked or feared By so doing, he incidental- ly achieves one striking result: he is both warmly liked and truly respected. To such a man we respect- fully dedicate the 1959 Spire. We wish by this dedi- cation to acknowledge our debt to FATHER RAPHAEL G. BRIDGES, O.S.B., Dean of Men of Bel- mont Abbey College. We have profited greatly from his services to us as dean, teacher, and friend. ■■« • DEDICATION Rt. Rev. Vincent G. Taylor, O.S.B., D.D. President Emeritus and Abbot Ordinary Very Rev. Walter A. Coggi O.S.B., Ph.D. Chancellor Very Reverend Cuthbert E. Allen, O.S.B., LL.D. President 1 1 ■ ' PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE LI3 The President ' s Message In the new Abbot Vincent Toylor Library may be seen the exquisite stained glass window. It is a double panneled window mode up of symbols that represent the philosophy, the obiectives, and the aims of Belmont Abbey College The left-hond ponel is dedicated to St, Benedict, the found- er of the Benedictine Order and the author of the Holy Rule by which the monks of the Abbey live. St. Benedict repre- sents the Good Life, the virtuous life, ond pictured are the symbols that indicate how the Good is attained: by a dis- ciplined life, a woy of living that will transform day-to-day actions ond perfect them, as one strives for the Supernoturol Good which is the end and object of human existence. In the right-hand panel are the symbols associated with St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic doctor, ond potron of college students. The symbols reflect the seorch after truth, the development of the intellectual virtues, ond the attainment of wisdom, transformed by the divine knowledge revealed by Christ to us. As the Abbey student is doily confronted by the striking beauty of the stained glass, he hos unfolded before him, in a symbolic medium, the ideals of the college student: the Good, the True, the Beautiful; and o doily reminder that the Abbey can be a cotolyst whereby the student may disci- pline his exercised free will ond ottoin thot body of knowledge to be transmitted into wisdom. I am the Woy, the Truth, and the Life, our Blessed Lord teaches us. The Abbey student must ever be mindful thot without Christ, the Woy, there is no going, with the Truth, there is no knowing, without the Life, there is no living! The Very Reverend Cuthbert E. Our basketball team, this year, for the first time, participated in the NCAA championship playoffs, and intercollegiate soccer made its initial appearance. It seems clear to me that this is the year when the Spire, too, ought to break away from precedent In its cover and binding, its pictorial content, and the informality of its approach to campus life, it repre- sents, I hope, a true reflection of the increased stature and vitality of the Abbey. May this 1959 memento portray the pride the Abbey has in its stu- dents and the students in the Abbey. r i Cecil Hayes, Editor-in-Chief (Mac) Thornton, Business Monager Mr. David J . A unique group of purposeful students exists on campus, informal in organization but united to- ward one goal — SPIRIT! These of the Crusaders have already been prov- en by their masters ' dependence on their support to be an integral part of Abbey ' s winning ways. Decorations, pep rallies, motorcades, and even the blazers donned when traveling to and from away games may be totally attributed to this spirit-minded group of Abbeymen. The blazers are the direct re- sult of a concentrated drive in the fall which was highlighted by a spaghetti supper. The need for the Squires was obvious; their response even more so. Three hundred students and fans, jammed into a sixty car caravan, decorated in Abbey ' s traditional scarlet and white, sent off the B. A. C. basketball team to Evansville, and for the NCAA, re- gional. Amidst the bewilderment at the airport unit from W.C.G.C. who broadcast an on-the-spot covering of the festivities. I 4rrC J 1 ! 160 EVANSVILLE TRIP The Crusaders added another first to its long list when the team accepted a bid to the NCAA College Regionals played at the beauti- ful (Roberts) Memorial Stadium in Evansville, Indiana. Abbey drew Evansville College, the host club, for the first game and from the start it was apparent that the winner would go all the way to the national championship. As it turned out, Evansville with the benefit of the Hoosier Hysteria, won 66-54 and then went on the following week to win the national honors. In the consolation game the following night the Crusaders were pitted against a strong Southern Illinois University, a club coached by Harry Gallatin, a former teammate on the New York Knickerbockers of the Crusaders coach Al McGuire. Abbey took the Illinois boys 79-70. Danny Doyle and Jim Sparrow were select- ed on the all tourney team. The Evansville fans fell in love with the Crusaders as evidenced by the fact that in the 1 9 5 9-60 season the Crusaders will meet Evansville, Southern Illinois, and Kentucky Wesleyan. In addition to that they requested Coach Al McGuire to be their principal speak- er at the Evansville basketball banquet Al accepted. Tension mounted so high in the heated battle of the Championship NCAA play-off game between the Abbey ond Evansville, that the fans provided Coach McGuire with a popsicle in order to cool off. ri LIBRARY DEDICATION Our year saw the fulfillment of a long dream when the Abbot Vincent Taylor library was dedicated in April. Bernard; always cheerful, always helpful, whether in an administrative capacity or os a friend. k «M The Student Body of Belmont Abbey College pays tribute to our deporting Aca- demic Dean, the Very Reverend Bernard L. Rosswog, O.S.B., S.T.D. Father Bernord ' s absence from the Abbey ' s administrative of- fices will be difficult to comprehend. We suspect thot students will continue to drop by his office for words of wisdom, counsel, and advice for some time to come, only to remember that Father Bernord is no longer with us. His oppointmenf to parochial work after many years of service to Abbeymen will deprive future generations of his deep understanding, friendly counsel, ond im- mense knowledge. Father Bernard served as Rector (Ad- ministrative Head) and Vice-President of the college from 1949 to 1957. Under his direction, the Abbey was re-established as a senior college and the groundwork was successfully laid for our recognition as a degree granting institution by all accredi- ting agencies. His guidance strengthened the curriculum and his recognition in aca- demic circles gave prestige to our college. As a result of the administrative re-or- ganization of the college in 1957, Father Bernard became the Academic Dean and was charged with the supervision of the faculty, curriculum ond internal functions of the college. He has served in this ca- pacity until the present time. Father Bernard, when we unite to say sincerely and fervently thank you for all you have done for us, we speak not only for ourselves but for our alumni. As Academic Deon, Fr. Bernard, O.S.B., is conscientiously selective, es- pecially so in choosing the correct curriculum thot will be of the most benefit to our students from foreign lands. Fr. Bernard, O.S.B., delivers address at graduation exercises. ' ■ ; - S hp l A ' ,v.V« .■C¥V. J- 5  .
