The President ' s Message The primary object of a college training is the development and the cultivation of the intellectual virtues. This primary ob- jective does not exclude the moral virtues; rather, it implies and demands them because the growth in the moral virtues is a nec- essary means for the cultivation of the intellectual vi rtue s , and character is a by-product of the training of both intellect and will. Moral judgment is the basis of individual freedom and re- sponsibility, and character training, inaction, must accompany intellectual growth if the end product is to be a Christian gentle- man, thoroughly reasonable; a God ' s gentleman, whose character is balanced and unified, a person in whom intellectual and moral virtues, working harmoniously together, should produce that per- fect contemplation of supreme truth which is the beginning of be- atitude here aad its consummation hereafter. Belmont Abbey College, in i t s philosophy, exists for the stu- dents and offers them the opportunity for self-realization. The Abbey would indeed find it difficult to justify its existence if it did not permeate all its activities with the spirit of Christ and the truth and the good in human conduct, and a religious life which is found in the Benedictine tradition. In striving for the development of virtue and a Christ-like character in its students, Belmont Ab- bey College is carrying on the highest tradition of Liberal Educa- tion, because the true Liberal Education has always sought the formation not only of the intelligent man, but of the good man.
