n r It OF THE ANNUAL STAFF OF BELMONT ABBEY COLLEGE Belmont, North Carolina 53193 PRESENTS... THE 1958 . IS BELMONT ACADEMICALLY SUPERIOR. May truth be our weapon, invincible against any aggressor. PHYSICALLY SOUND. Bodily cleanli- ness and wholesome fun refresh the mind. ABBEY COLLEGE SPIRITUALLY STABLE. Our chief aim is that in all things God may be glorified. J Scholarship, health, and a strong sense of Christian morality are the ingredients of success; the union of body and soul seeking a worthy goal. •SPIRITUALLY •ACADEMICALLY •PHYSICALLY ■ FOREWORD In presenting this issue of The Spire, we have endeavored to s e t forth the joys we have shared, the achievements we have won, and the difficulties we have encountered and overcome. As we review these events, we realize more deeply the significance and value of a Catholic education as a preparation for life in time and in eternity. The following pages capture a small portion of the momentous occasions which has so char- acterized our years at Belmont Abbey College. We hope that these pages of this annual will bring the joys of reminiscence to all who remember this life at the Abbey. ALREADY PASSING IT ' S On Monday afternoon, September 31, 1957, the Most Reverend Abbot Vincent G. Tay- lor, O.S.B. presided over the ground break- ing ceremonies for the new library. The Modern-Gothic structure was designed by Father Michael Mclnerney, O.S.B. , A. I. A. and will house over 60,000 volumes. Speak- ing to those present, Abbot Taylor re - marked of the importance of the occasion. This 1b an auspicious occasion, for it marks the beginning of an expansion pro- gram for Belmont Abbey College in its efforts to meet the needs of the growing student body. After the completion of the library, work will be begun on a new dormitory hall and then on a cafeteria. We ever grow and prosper under the guidance of Our Lady Help of Christians. FROM THE PROPER COORDINATION OF MANY 16 Seldom is it pure skill that achieves great things. Skill without the aid of confidence and in- spiration is a vulnerable skill, and tends to falter in the face of difficulty and advancing defeat. Great ability and talent need the backing of its colleagues, the cheers of its friends. Skill needs spirit. Spirit is the driving force behind human efforts. It re- places defeat with determined perseverence, molds confidence from anxiety, and turns victory into sustained glory. WORKING TOGETHER TOWARD THE SAME GOAL 17 ACTIVE PARTICIPATION... ACADEMIC PURSUITS... The power of the individual to affect the course of history cannot be stressed. History, itself, offers an endless series of proofs for this fact. It is the solemn obligation of each individual to see that the world is better because he has lived in it. He can only fulfill this obligation by assuring his own steady progress toward perfection. May we, of the Abbey find an honest awareness of our p o w e r as indivi- duals and a holy realization of our innate nothingness as creatures of an Infinaite God. Each Senior anticipates his degree, feeling that the best is yet to come. For it was here that their fellow classmates will learn what and the best can mean. Our Seniors have learned how to live - for themselves; their neighbors; and their God. They leave, therefore, not without a twinge of nostaglia. The Abbey has been the source of thei r advancement, and no graduate from the college will ever forget the special aid he has received from the Benedictine way of education. We hope that this bookhas caught some of these special moments and will in years to come remind the Seniors of their last year at the Abbey. After much consideration, we have chosen that this issue of the Spire be dedicated to those who have been a source of inspiration to us. To them, we owe thanks for the lofty ideals and principles that have helped us to prepare for the future. To those who have beenmore than teach- ers, but friends and companions, showing great interest in our minute problems, we are express- ing our esteem and gratitude by paying this tri- bute to them. We thank you Father Joseph and Father Anthony for being our teachers, guides, and friends, and humbly dedicate this annual to you, as a token of our appreciation. 24 FRIEND. ..TEACHER. ..COMPANION 25 WE WISH TO EXPRESS OUR APPRECIATION To our present beloved leader, His Excellency, the Right Reverend Abbot Vincent G. Taylor, O.S.B. To him we pledge our loyality and pray that the blessing of God be with him. To the Very Reverend Co-adjustor Walter A. Coggin, O.S.B. we thank for the spiritual and academic assistance he has afforded us. jLJ j ml ' 27 The President ' s Message The primary object of a college training is the development and the cultivation of the intellectual virtues. This primary ob- jective does not exclude the moral virtues; rather, it implies and demands them because the growth in the moral virtues is a nec- essary means for the cultivation of the intellectual vi rtue s , and character is a by-product of the training of both intellect and will. Moral judgment is the basis of individual freedom and re- sponsibility, and character training, inaction, must accompany intellectual growth if the end product is to be a Christian gentle- man, thoroughly reasonable; a God ' s gentleman, whose character is balanced and unified, a person in whom intellectual and moral virtues, working harmoniously together, should produce that per- fect contemplation of supreme truth which is the beginning of be- atitude here aad its consummation hereafter. Belmont Abbey College, in i t s philosophy, exists for the stu- dents and offers them the opportunity for self-realization. The Abbey would indeed find it difficult to justify its existence if it did not permeate all its activities with the spirit of Christ and the truth and the good in human conduct, and a religious life which is found in the Benedictine tradition. In striving for the development of virtue and a Christ-like character in its students, Belmont Ab- bey College is carrying on the highest tradition of Liberal Educa- tion, because the true Liberal Education has always sought the formation not only of the intelligent man, but of the good man. The end of the road is no longer in sight, but rather at hand. These four years were dif- ficult, but enjoyable, and the studies which compose a major and mold the manhave beenmastered. The commencement which is sym- bolized by the traditional presen- tation of a sheepskin, loosens the binding forces of the institution, but engraves the title ABBEY- MAN , which shall become a fixed epithet for each and every grad- uate. Only the future lies ahead-- may it be a successful one.  £ 42 Berkley B. Altman Gastonia, N. C. Lander L, Barnhill Gastonia, N. C. Frederick O. Behrends Wilmington, N. C. SENIOR CLASS James E. THOMAS AQUINAS, MARCH 7, 1958 The Patron of Catholic schools, St. Thomas Aquinas, was honored in a special way here at the Abbey with a Symposium given by the members of the Philosophy Department. The program opened with an address by the Professor of Philosophy, Mr. Benedict Berry, under whose able direction it was prepared. Following the chanting of one of St. Thomas ' hymns , the Lauda Si on , by the Schola C ntorum of the Abbey, papers were given by Mr. Frederick Behrends on the life and works of the Saint, by F rater Clement Porzio, O. S. B. treating the poetica; compositions of St. Thomas, and by Mr. Berkely Altman, who spoke of the role of the Protector of Scholastic Philosophy as the Magister. As a fitting tribute to the Saint, OurVery Rev. Pres. CuthbertE. Allen, O. S. B. declared the remainder of the day a holiday. The Antiphon for a Doctor of the Church, rendered by the Schola of monks, created an effective close to the Symposium. Professor ° .
