We, the Staff, ap- preciate the many helpful hints and ideas c o mmende d for the format contained herein. We admit, that we are far from achieving success, as you - the ABBEYMEN - had visions for this 1957 Annual. But, many new features have been incorporated into this volume, and which we hope, will meet with your approval. 53099 Those hallowed walls of ivy Deep philosophical discussions before chow Bain ' s first point in his maturation program Good progrann on boys? m ... Because YOU requested it, we present in capsule form the history of your ALMA MATER . 1. Belmont Abbey College is one of the oldest Catholic Educational institutions in the South. 2. Its history dates back to October of 1876 when classes were first held. 3. The September of 1878 marked the of- ficial opening of St. Mary ' s College, as it was then known. 4. The College was chartered according to North C a r o 1 i n a State Law on April 1 , 1886, with all the rights and privileges of Colleges and Universities in North Carolina. 5. The announcement of the change of name from St. Mary ' s College to BELMONT ABBEY COLLEGE was made on Novem- ber 27, 1913. 6. The first President of the College was The Right Reverend Leo Haid, O.S.B., D.D. 7. The second Presidentof the College was The Right Reverend Vincent G. Taylor, O.S.B., D.D. 8. ThethirdPresidentofthe College is The Very Reverend Cuthbert E. Allen, O .S.B., LL.D. 9. On April 3, 1956, The Very Reverend Walter A. Coggin, O. S. B., Ph. D., be- came Chancellor of the College, with The Right Reverend Vincent G. Taylor, O.S.B., D.D., as President-Emeritus. The most easily recognized and the nnost undeniable spirit prevails during basketball season. But this is just a means to express the very same way we feel during the entire school year. Mostpeople wrongly equate the entire amount of school spirit to the loudness of the cheers or the number of cheerleaders; but this is not true we have to take in the whole picture of that constant undercurrent of feeling that is always there. c eei Ai Moaic... This feeling of school spirit should not and is not a passive thing, it is a living andactive state. A passive idea of school spirit leads one to a complacent acceptance of modes of action without any thought of change, not just change for itself, but change that not only enhances the individual but also the entire student body. It is this idea of active, creative school spirit that prompted the Student Government to initiate a new dance program that would do just this. 4 Stan, The Man, Alexander and the dance of the year ' m A (p m annual will You ' ll not keep that New Year ' s resolution at the Casbah As we have said before we hope that this Abbey, nere chronology of 3typed book, but rather somjiyiing new and dij l B This is why we have picked o C ptUWmm, what, keep- many, but ing with tradition, generally ' h app s here at the rest. the school year serious Ijc jl ai Md te The Teachers are taught Basketball is still the major sport, and the Casbah is the scene of the minor sports. Curran worked up from the ranks; first as the writer and originator of The Fish Bowl ; then he proceeded to the backpage where he wrote The Water Bucket and then, the final crown as Editor-in-Chief. His policies have remained unchanged follow- ing in the tradition of his predecessors of putting the truth first and then having the courage of his convictions to maintain it. „T-He press jSfu.He.pe.
