- m HI E 5309G PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF BELMONT ABBEY COLLEGE Belmont, North Carolina ' A ' ■BP $ 3F , ' ■•■•■A V As our college career comes to a close we, the class of 1956, recognize that we owe an immense debt of gratitude to many individuals. Throughout all the days of our future, our way of life, we trust, will partly repay those whose confidence and encouragement have led us to the goal of graduation. To one very special group, however, we desire to render more prompt acknowledgement. Today, when the sense of our personal achievement is undeniable, we want to assert ;•■■■••■• ' •-••■HBfrar - I w l • i publicly our awareness that whatever success we have known in college and whatever heights we may afterwards attain find their explanation in the devotion and sacrifice shown by our parents. For all they have done we are inexpressibly thankful. Our dedication of this year ' s Spire to our parents is a small but love-ladened recognition of their long, long dedi- cation to us. Moderator ' ' 2 |V,- b iewwi{ We believe the purpose of any college annual to be a record of activities and events. This should be a memory book. We know that the finished product is a student creation. And, last but not least, this annual is an instrument for promoting good public relations between Belmont Abbey College and the community it serves. The home, the church, and the school are the bastions of our re- public. Truly, B elmont Abb e y College in its seventy eight year has provided the foundation on which our countryhas beenbuilt and does now stand. Proceeding with caution and care, our Alma Mater has grown along with the Crescat tree which is symbolized on the great seal of the institution. The Abbey realizes that full maturity is still to be attained. Yet, proudly in this year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty six, she presents to the world, her first blossom-the first full four year college graduating class ! It is to these graduates that she cries aloud Crescat . May they, like those who preceded them, rise to be the great leaders of the nation today. May they foster and nurture their Alma Mater to greater glories in the years ahead. And, may they always follow the motto under which their four years sojourn here was ever eminent- that in all things God may be glorified. c ADMINISTRATION imIM w i t nuuuwiwmtmiwn FACULTY THE RIGHT REVEREND VINCENT GEORGE TAYLOR O.S.B., D.D., LL.D., PRESIDENT -EMERITUS. The general aim of this vital organization is to cultivate anddevelop the powers of self-government and to instill into the students a sense of their responsibility to themselves, to God and to their country. When Belmont Abbeybecame a four-year college, it was discovered that the old constituition was highly inadequate. The task of drawing a com- pletely new constituition fell upon the shoulders of this year ' s legislators. With this constantly before them, they still found the time for numerous and diverse improvements around the campus. Speed was their chief asset and speed is what they had. With only two men touching the 6 6 mark, the team concentrated on the fast-break technique. This insured adequate protection against most of their opponents. Highlights of the season were the three games scheduled in Charlotte ' s newly-completed Coliseum. On December 9, the Abbey battled a three -year -old rival, Erskine. On January 4, the Abbey played host to the University of Richmond and then on February 3, confronted Presbyterian College. The Crusaders are a well-balanced team, displaying equal agility and ease in both offensive and defensive tactics. They have men who possess a good eye for the basket from any spot on the court.
