Much has happened to you and your classmates since you became ABBEYMEN. Remember when you first saw an issue of the SPIRE? How far away today seemed! Compared to the reality of those unforgettable days, this is merely a microscopic resume in words and pictures. But the Staff has attempted to be your faithful guardians of Abbey life, events, and heritage. Hence, the pictorial story attempts to grasp the spirit and atmosphere of Belmont Abbey College. SPIRE tells the epic of your college life. It explains in a simple way the glory, the joy, the pride and the accomplishments of your tenure here. May this retro- spection guide you to pleasant memories, to abetter understanding of the complexity of collegiate life, and finally to a heartwarming smile of those years when the ' ' golden days of youth have vanished .... fflcuLiy THE RIGHT REVEREND VINCENT GEORGE TAYLOR O.S.B., D.D., LL. ' General ' McClellan HEAD COACH The 1954-55 e dition of ' General ' Al Mc- Clellan ' s Crusader basketball team was indeed one of which every Abbeyman could justly be proud. Starting the season like a house -a -fire, the Crusaders won sevenof their first ten games and see Tied under way to a successful year. However, the start of the second semester saw the loss of two key men and a six ga ne slump followed. The ' General shuffled his line -up in an attempt to floor a winning combination. . .And his attempts were not in vain ! With the spirited floor play of boys like Taglieri O ' Leary and Connors, the whole squad seemed to catch fire afresh. Marcil ' s deadly jump s hot , rebounding by Coil, York and Harding, and the versatile play of co -captain Theberge bro ught the Crusaders out of their slump. They trounced the highly-touted Parris Island Marines in a thrill-a-minute classic, and closed the season by winning six of their last ten games for a final record of 15-13. Led by Captain Frank Ciucevich and returning lettermen Frain, Bambauer, Connors, .ind York, this year ' s team looked promising. It is as yet too early to make predic- tions. But with such boys as mentioned above and new men with the calibre of Bob Grabez, Joe Camp, and Bill Peel the team surely has depth and strength. Under the competent tutelage of Coach Wheeler, we feel sure that the 1955 season will be a good one. H. A.
