WE THE STUDENTS OF BELMONT ABBEY DE- DICATE TO YOU OUR SPIRE OF 1954. Faith in the future and an attitude of Peace has prevailed against the ravages of time. Seventy- six years of living for Belmont Abbey has not changed the spirit of The Abbey aim of: Training of the body, the informing of the mind, the strengthening of the will, the developing of habits and skills and attitudes, all these must be for God and in a ccord with God ' s will. How can we fail? By placing the whole of us in Him, the Creator of all things, and shower- ing Him with our prayers for eternal Peace, our Faith can and will remain steadfast and firm. The present Staff of the Spire believes this issue of our memorabilia should recall to mind, that our veterans who had served their country honorably and with distinction and remembering those future members of the armed forces, who await their call to serve for peace - all hold this precious faith for peace as God ' s stalwarts. If this volume projects itself among our student body, the idea of Faith and Peace, we shall have served our purpose. One small segment of the world ' s population can propagate our sincere wish. Our Alma Mater ' s purpose shall have been attained and our most heartfelt aspiration realized. WGNC Wednesday STUDENT RADIO PROGRAM COLLEGE STUDENT COUNCIL THE STUDENT COUNCIL There ' s no one, in this our student body, that can say that our STUDENT COUNCIL, under President Jack Noble, has not had a stormy and hectic year. We have seen rhubardsof almost gigantic proportions and there have been meetings where the dove of peace prevailed. In retrospect, the STUDENT COUNCIL this year served its purpose to develop, in a practical way, the powers of self-government , to foster the sense of responsibility , and to cul- tivate the social qualities. THE ABBEY PLAYERS This group of forty-five members, composed of the young ladies from Sacred Heart College and the young men of Bel- mont Abbey College and Prep Departments, have had an ex- citing and busy year. There have been three stage product- ions; six radio presentations; and two interpretative dramas. The Road Tour, making a swing around Gaston County was a terrific success. However, let it suffice to say, that in our own simple words, the ABBEY gained much nationwide publicity in this first year of big-time basketball. The team was composed of scrappers, and all pl aying their hearts out with no star amongst them. The coach, a shaper of men, molded a Freshman team into a stellar outfit. The Crusaders will ride on to greater renown and will scourge the countryside in the years to come. This we predict! i • ----- -■-■■, =: G m. We do know that all po- sitions were strong with some weakness showing on the mound. Perhaps the coach will uncover a Feller or a Pierce, a pit- cher who with a good team behind him will bring home the bacon. PREP MONOGRAM CLUB _..- -i-v-rT r 1 :. ' ' ? I Kneeling L to R: Talley, Dowling, Marginot, Dunham. Standing: Don Rummler, Jenkins, Gardner, Anderson, Shirley, McDonnell. The Rambler Monogram Club is the athletic organization of the Prep School. The group is made up of all those who have earned their letters in interscholastic competition. Since the Prep has no baseball or football teams, all letters are earned in interscholastic basketball competition. Membership in the Club acts as an incentive for prospective athletes. This fact is brought plainly into view by the great majority of boys who attempt to gain a berth on the basketball squad. All members attend the athletic banquet at the close of the year. Fr. Raphael is the official mod- erator for the Club. RAMBLER BASKETBALL Seated L to R: Talley, Dowling, Shirley, Gardner (Capt.), Marginot, Cowan, Dunham, McDonnell. Standing: Jenkins (Mgr.), Whitley, Anderson, Wheeler, Fr. Raphael (Coach), Delaney, Louis, Ward, Rummler (Assistant Mgr.). The Rambler s represent the Prep in inter scholastic basketball competition. Although the team did not have a particularly brilliant year in terms of the won-lost record (7 to 13) due to the size of the schools against whom they played and the high quality competition, they showed a lot of fight and good clean basketball. The team was ably coached by Fr. Raphael O. S. B. The tour- nament in Asheville, N. C. saw a hard fighting Abbey team taking the runner-ups honors.
