Ornanda enim est Dignitas domo, Non ex domo tota quaerenda, Nee domo dominus, Sed domino domus Honestanda est. - Cicero, De Officiis I. 39 uumiiuiHura THE RIGHT REVEREND VINCENT GEORGE TAYLOR O.S. B., D.D. , LL. D. wip i The Master is enhanced by his Demesne, For here is native worthiness best seen. And yet no House this greatness can confer; It does but glory, fame, renown declare. Refulgent with a bright reflected splendour, Yields palm to Master in its meek surrender. Thus echoing our Sage ' s salutation. Your House, O Masters, makes this dedication. foreword Three quarters of a century has passed since Belmont Abbey College sent forth its firstgradu- ating class. During these seventy five years thousands of students have been molded into good citizens for their state and nation. The educa- tive process through the years has been motivated and permeated by this principle! THE TRAINING OF THE BODY, THE INFORMING OF THE MIND, THE STRENGTHENING OF THE WILL, THE DEVELOPING OF HABITS AND SKILLS AND ATTITUDES. In recognizing this anniversary of our school The Staff of the Spire wishes to re-emphasize the traditions of the past and express our hopes that there will be per- petuated and projected into the lives of those yet to come. If this volume is instrumental in re- calling old friends to the reader ' s mind, in visua- lizing for him old scenes and activities connected with his and our ALMA MATER, then our purpose will be attained and our fondest hope realized. d a ea za J9ZZ lZs4lJ2 ZtZe?s fz j CjyCC tit f f 4ZS07 J0Z0 SZ ™rora «TOragwi aam MMS m«M « faculty The Very Rev. American College Student Headers The selection of students to be included in the National roster of outstanding students in American Colleges and Universities is based on overt acts and is intended to give recognition for academic scholarship, student leadership in campus activities and for demonstrated college community spirit. The Abbeymen picturedabove, one Sophomore, three Juniors and a Senior, were chosen by a Student-Faculty Committee and are the Abbey ' s representatives appearing in American College Student Leaders Publication for 1953. To be selected is a dis- tinction; to be included in Student Leader s is a recognition; the above gentlemen have earned the honors that have come to them. Zhe At bey Players The young ladies and gentlemen of the Abbey Players, forty strong, are a happy-go-lucky group, giving up hours of freedom, for the thrill of appearing before their public and entertaining them. None have the Broadway or Hollywood fever, their purpose is mainly to gain self con- fidence, self-reliance and poise . The Abbey Players record is outstanding in the calibre of plays produced. The group is seventy five years old this year - yet, young in spirit and will to be better with each presentation. !_,. to R: Wade, Picot, Youngmer L. to R: Rummler, Younginer, Van de Water, Harrison, Sheenan, Snock, Abernathy, Vanore, Brown. j e? With the exception of Bill Frain, Frank Rozzelle, and Ted Gaston, the only returning lettermen from last year ' s squad, the Crusader line-up was dominated by Freshmen. Leading the group of yearlings was Luke Lenahan, whose all-around play carried the team to many vic- tories.
