THE SPIRE 1949 •V . :i i i t j. , ; vi, v.v H , [}307G I DEDICATION His more than half a hundred years in the school of the Lord ' s ser ' ice as a monk— His fifty years before God ' s altar as a priest— The twenty-five years he has been Father to his Bene- dictine sons as Abbot- Shepherd to his flock as Ordinary- Guide of Abbeymen through quarter of a century as president of this college— These goals achieved We recognize, record, acclaim In dedicating this 1949 Spire AD MULTOS ANNOS Pni t ' four f -T —r- ■y miA The Right Reverend ' incent G. Taylor. O.S.B.. D.D., LL.D. Ahhoi Ordinary and President Ptii e Vive ■:ij ia- FOREWORD One thing all ot us wish to keep forever is our youth. Sometimes people will go to ridiculous extremes in an effort to hold or regain it. Men have vainly sought mythical fountains of youth. Dorian Gray, in Wilde ' s allegory, stayed young while his portrait grew old. Faust traded his soul that he might be young again. The theme is probably as old as man, but in spite of everything we may do, youth flies from us all, and once gone, it never returns. And yet, we can ' t keep our youth, but we can keep and treasure the memory of it. That may not be quite what we want, but it ' s the next best thing. This is a book of memories. Between its covers we may stem time ' s flow for a brief, sweet moment: the Tucke Shop and the Cathedral, cramming for exams and week-ends in Charlotte, dances in the gym and a date at Bentley ' s, books and more books. Father Joe ' s physics lab and that horrible race-horse music they played in the morning. Some are pleasant— some aren ' t. All are worth a nostalgic smile. It ' s memory now. Coach Howard A. Wheeler and Assistant Coach Jim Elvington had to forge a team to face one of the heaviest schedules ever to confront the Abbevmen. Learning to work together took time, and the Crusaders found the going tough at first, as tliey were edged by Gardner-Webb and Conference champions Lees KlcRae. However, patience, hard work and spirit began to pay off, for against the powerful Tennessee Weslevan, the Abbey team came into its own. Scoring on the opening kickoff, the Crusaders out-plaved the big Weslevan squad, until the Tennessee boys left the field in the middle of the third period, thus forfeiting to the Abbey. Bruised after their rugged outing with Tennessee only the week before, the Cru- saders met undefeated and highly ' favored Campbell College. But when the smoke of battle had cleared, the Campbell gridders considered themselves lucky to return home with a 19 to 18 win. No rest for the weary could very well be applied to the Crusaders, for they next journeyed to Milledgeville, Georgia, to meet the undefeated Georgia Military College. Here again the Wheelermen met a much heavier and more experienced opponent, and after a rough sixty minutes of play, the Crusaders trailed by seven points. After a hard-fought season, three Abbeymen, Bill Wright, Ed Andrychowski, and Fred Snider won well-deserved positions on the All-Conference team. Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of this team was its indomitable spirit and deter- mination under great odds. So, without further ado, we wish to salute the Crusaders of ' 48-49. C, toppled three strong toes (undel ' eated Campbell College included) in quick succession, and returned home with the Carolinas ' Junior College basketball trophy. It would be hard to single out any one man to lay the laurels on because they were all stars in their own field. Roscoe Leftwich. with his snappy set- ups, was a sure bet for All-State honors. Bill Fletcher was the answer to Coach Wheeler ' s prayers for the perfect floor man. while Cencula and Porvaznic also showed up as flawless floormen. Jenks Brendle burned up the hoop with his fantastically accurate field goals and Ted Rces played havoc with the opponents ' backboard. Witfi onlv six lettermcn returning and with a tough six-game schedule ahead of them. Fathers Walter and Dennis had a man-sized job on their hands. After a three-week practice stint, the Ramblers headed toward Con- cord onlv to fall before their bccfv opponents b a score of 31-7. But that defeat wasn ' t too bitter a pill for the junior Crusaders. Thev realized then, along with the rest of the student bodv. that the old Rambler spirit had come back to the Abbey. Thev kept up that long hard practice under the boiling Carolina sun. always pointing for victor ' . but it never came in the next four games. E ervone plaved an imprn ed game of football, but it just wasn ' t enough. After a swing through Augusta, Ga.. the Ramblers got readv for their final game— Central B. As usual, the - were dwarfed b the big Charlotte boys, but thex ' were accustomed to this bv now. It was in the Central game that the hard practice grinds began to pav off. After a mediocre first half, the Ramblers plucked two TDs and walked awav from Charlotte with a win under their belts. Next year the coaches will again find themselves short of heavv. experienced material. Sousa. Ingold, Dunham, lortajada; Reiner, Fitzpatrick, McCorkle, Wil- liamson, Poole, Came. Bain. Renuart, Bcrrv and Olaso will leave ia cap and gown. We wish them luck. Although the Ramblers didn ' t have an outstanding season. the had a successful one. Thev got together and pulled as a team, and after all, that ' s the object of the game. Under the fine tutelage of Father Walter and Father Dennis, and under the captaincv of Fitzpatrick and McCorkle. thev developed a fierce spirit— a spirit that has alwa s been indicatixe of Rambler sports. Father Bren- dan faced the issue squarelv and started early in November to mold a team that could compare with the mighty ' 48 edition of the Ramblers— a Herculean job. But with almost endless practice sessions and plenty of spirit, both on the court and from the stands, hidden talent began to show itself. By the middle of December they were ready to start the long grind that saw them giye and take with some of the smart- est teams in this section. To Father Brendan Doole . O.S.B.. goes a great deal of the team ' s success, for it was this jaunty little priest who stood to the side guiding and adyising the Green- men with his great store of basketball knowledge. lo Father Brendan and the entire team go our best wishes and con- gratulations. ■Sim J H 4 , -- ws st Father Brendan, Coach Let ' s have a look at the Ramblers 34 Ramblers 22 Ramblers 38 Ramblers 45 Ramblers 20 Ramblers 21 Ramblers 27 Ramblers 27 Ramblers 33 Ramblers 25 Ramblers 29 Ramblers 41 Ramblers 39 Ramblers 28 Ramhlers 34 Ramblers 33 Ramblers 22 record : Lowell 37 Concord 33 Dallas 21 Tech 35 Cramerton 29 Stanley 27 Belmont 37 Dallas 24 Benedictine (Ga.) ...48 Mount Holly 32 Gastonia 31 Tech 20 Belmont 30 Mount Holly 27 Lowell 36 Cramerton 52 Gastonia 31 Pflfje Sixty-three Ramhieis s.
