We can present, however, only the externals of this campus life because the love and companionship of Abbey cannot be enclosed in bindings. Using the campus ' familiar gothic arches as a back- ground, and student life as a subject, ive have recorded here a remem- brance for the years to come. Perchance, during a future day of some rainy season, you may choose to recall your school days. ' -fl m if - fVM THE 1941 SPIRE STAFF As time seals the door on the year 1940-41, a full, rounded year, brimming over with fun and laughter, you come to the realization that school life for another year has ended. To create an Annual which would differentiate itself from previous books, and to record a spark of Abbey Spirit and that democratic out- look of Belmont Abbey, are the purposes of this book. Richard Crawford was Editor of the ' 41 SPIRE and was ably assisted by Charlton Howard in the capacity of Business Manager. CONTACT STAFF Many were the happy months spent at Abbey, but there were times that we Hked better than others. One of the most interesting days of each month was the 25 th. The Contact came out on this date and all eagerly awaited it: for it contamed the latest scandal and secrets of the campus as well as the news articles. Contact was edited by that amiable fellow. Jimmy Boyd. Last year he was Feature Editor and this year he did very commendable work in editing a paper that will stand out among the best published at this school. The business staff was headed by Bill Marshall, who deserves much credit for his capable business ideas. Arranging a calendar of events so as to avoid conflictions of different activities. gave a definite start to this revolutionized Council. This organization has imbedded into the Freshmen a true spirit of leadership and cooperation that they may carry on next year and leave to their successors the same interest now held by the Council. Wheeler dAthkttcs AT BELMONT ABBEY Having played a scoreless tie in a thrilling game on Thanks- giving Day to decide the South- eastern Junior College Cham- pionship, the G. M. C. Cadets and Belmont Abbey Crusaders met again on the same field two weeks later in a post-season tilt for the final play-off. CRUSADERS 30 Oft I LiVvl HA al The 1 940 edition of the Belmont Abbey Crusaders undertook the hardest schedule in the annals of the sports history of the school and ended the season with 5 victories. 2 losses, and 2 scoreless deadlocks. In practically all the games the courageous Crusaders were heavily out- weighed by their opponents, but the never-say-die spirit that prevails with all Abbey teams, combined with superb team spirit and intricate coaching, enabled them to emerge victorious over their larger opponents time and again. They really played hard to earn this celebrated title. Led by Captain Con- don, from Charleston. S. C the rampaging Abbeymen produced as smooth a working quintet as ever represented this school. They ran roughshod through the Conference Tourney by virtue of victories over Wingate. Oak Ridge, and Lees-McRae. Throughout the regular playing season the Wheelermen walked away with eight victories over conference members while losing only two league games. Page Fifty-three Page Fifty-four RAMBLERS BASKETBALL TEAM Not to be outdone by the Varsity, the Ramblers distinguished themselves highly this season by winning runner-up prize in the Gaston County Tourney held in March. The Rousting Ramblers won ten regular season games and lost six. and in the tournament were victorious over Lowell, and Mt. Holly, for the right to play Stanley in the finals. Although the Stanley team had won from the locals twice during the regular season, they made the last game a thrilling affair, but finally bowed to the Champs by the score of 26-20: We are very proud of the small Crusaders because of their display of fine courageous team spirit and sportsmanship. Having undertaken a stiff eight-game schedule the mighty prepsters emerged victorious in six games, lost one. and tied one. The highlight game of the season is said to be the Tech Hi game: in this the outweighed Ramblers were outscored, 27 to 18, but they outfought and outplayed the larger team all over the field. These young prep stalwarts are groomed to be future Ramblers and play many prelim- inary games to their older cohorts. Last year the Cubs played a preliminary game to the finals in the Gaston Junior College Tourney but were unable to do so this season. The youngsters were coached by John Golden, who relied upon Brian Mulherin, Tony Maristany. Phil Feeney, Bruce Van Wagner, and Billy Braun to comprise his starting quintet. Many notable substitutes are in order and they are: Carl Rieger, Jack DeVonde, Floyd MulhoUand, Alfred Gallant, Gerald Pichard, and Bobby Braun. Keep up your fine team work. Cubs, and you will be Ramblers next year! Page Fifty-eigbl BOXING Although the boxing team had no major battles, the team headed by Cap- tain Meyer Sonneborn entered the Caro- lina Golden Gloves and came out with a championship in the feather-weight division. The proud claimant to this title was shrewd Jack Sherry: the other mem- bers of the Golden Gloves squad were Ben Berry, Bob Thalman. Elmore Thomas. Hugh Nocll, Hank Hart, and Dale Carmody.
