THE 1340 SPIRE STAFF The members of the 1940 SPIRE Staff, who have concentrated their atten- tion and efforts so that the students could have a memento of the school year. Editor of the Annual this year was Benjamin Jones, who was ably assisted by William Copeland as Associate Editor and Melvin Johnson as Business Manager. Other members of the staff who did much to make this book a success were Hobart Joost, Neil Hurst, Quint Furr, Paul Weatherley, and William Fulton on the Editorial Staff, and William Rawlins and John Cuningham on the Business Staff. During the year. Contact has received the Second Class Honor Rating in the All-American survey conducted by the Associated Collegiate Press, the All-Catholic award from the Catholic School Press Association, and was designated as a ' Distinguished Newspaper by Emory University in a contest conducted by the Atlanta Journal. During 1939-40 Gilbert J. Farley headed the staff as Editor, assisted by Benjamin M. Jones as Sports Editor. Quint E. Furr. Business Manager, and by able co-workers who will continue next year. Page Forty -one vmtleynjT Cb Familiar Campus Scenes s «• OJiqani cdwfidu ■ GLEE ELUB Under the skillful direction of Mr. J. B. Houren. Mr. Jack, the Abbey Glee Club has had a most successful season. This year, boasting an organiza- tion that compared favorably with any in the State, the Club gave concerts in several of the larger cities throughout North and South Carolina and impressed large audiences at each concert. The Glee Club combined with the Sacred Heart College for Women ' s club, also under the direction of Mr. Houren, made a unique group. America, C orever REFRAIN | p g ; J n ir _ PIEDMDNT CLUB The students ' social club at the Abbey. For 1 5 years this organization has been the center of social activities on the campus. This year the club has spon- sored its usual quota of dances, the climax of which was the C.B.S. broadcast from the dance floor in Haid Gymnasium at the Spring Formal. The Piedmont Club, which boasted of the largest number of members in years, also sponsored a lecture on the Progress of Science in Physics. Page forty-five WudjUlMJ WU ' VARSITY MONOGRAM CLUB The Varsity Monogram Club is composed of those students who have earned their monograms in football, basketball, track and boxing. The club has been active in all the functions of the school, and has been the sponsor of several social affairs which were a credit to the organization. Many new members were added to the club this year, which made it the largest Monogram Club in school history. Page Forty-six HHH RAMBLERS CLUB One of the most progressive organizations at the Abbey, the Ramblers Club, composed of preparatory school students, has successfully sponsored all prep activities under the direction of Father Daniel Baran. O.S.B. In addition to social activities, including dances and parties, this club is responsible for pro- ducing one of the best-equipped and well-trained athletic groups playing under the Ramblers ' name. This year Jack Cunningham was President of the organi- zation and Ecdes Gray, Secretary-Treasurer. Page Forty-seven UMynJ U PREP SCHOOL MONOGRAM CLUB The Prep School Monogram Club for the year 1939-40, composed of Lcttermen in Foot- ball and Basketball. The Day Students Club, with Mr. Melvin Johnson as Presi- dent and Father Walter Coggins. O.S.B.. moderator, is composed of off-campus students. DAY STUDENTS CLUB Page Forty-eight ALTAR BOYS The St. Johns Berchmans Altar Boys Society under the direction of the Very Rev. Nicholas Bliley. O.S.B.. assisted by the Rev. Father Anselm Biggs, O.S.B.. has completed its twenty- sixth year of service in the Cathedral, assisting in the litur- gical functions. The Beta Theta Prep Dra- matic Fraternity under the direc- tion of David J. Gorney termi- nates another successful season of entertaining the student body with drama, tragedy, comedy, and mellerdramma. Houren, the Combined Glee Clubs of Belmont Abbey and Sacred Heart Colleges this year presented concerts in the larger cities of North and South Carolina, in addition to appear- ing before various local civic organizations and have received highest praise from musical critics. Composed of members of the Belmont Abbey College Glee Club, the Choir has sung several Masses in the Abbey Cathedral and Charleston. S. C. This group is also directed by Mr. John B. GiklotioL ■ COACHES The trophies in the Administration office are evidence, in themselves, of the ability of Head Coach Wheeler and Assistant Coach Schwerdt. Under the guidance of these two mentors, the Abbeymen, commonly known as the Crusaders, have not failed, for the past five years, to bring home the bacon. In Georgia, the Carolinas, Maryland. Virginia, and other Southern states, the power of the Crusaders has become a legend. This is due primarily to the splendid directing of the two coaches, whose efforts were so conscientious and whose knowledge of boys so thorough that, tho winning was secondary, they did win the majority of the time. A tribute to the two gentlemen who have directed the physical activities of the Abbey during the past year — and for them, a tribute to the boys whose records symbolize the work of their coaches. Father Daniel Baran. O.S.B.. coach, developed a team that was able to win the consolation prize in the Gaston County Tourney and also triumphed over Bishop England High of Charleston — perennial power in the National Catholic Tourney in Chicago — in what was the climax game of their season. Page Fifty-nine RAMBLER CUBS The Junior Ramblers Basketball Team, court midgets of the school, com- pleted their second year of competition by winning the Midget School Cham- pionship from Victory School in the preliminary game of the finals of the Junior College Conference Tourney. Much of their success was due to the able direction of Coach James Walker. Page Sixty BOXING Rapidly coming to the front under Coach Tom Hanna. Father Martin Hayes, O.S.B., as faculty adviser, and Captain George Weldon, boxing had its most successful season in the history of the sport at the Abbey. For the third consecutive year the Crusaders winged men have swept the field by such large margins that they have earned the name King of the Junior College Track. In the annual conference meet at Davidson the team garnered everything but a permanent trophy, and did themselves honor in the Junior A.A.U. meet at Chapel Hill. The inspiring leadership of Captain Fred Volleman. and the great success of the team, deserve to be mentioned together.
